PS3 How to install Linux on PS3 HFW 4.87?

I have a PS3 Slim with HEN and HFW 4.87 and I want to install Linux on it but i don't know how, rebug servers are probably closed.... please help me.

If You are on HEN or OFW past v3.55, only by patching the flash to allowing install CFW. But only on models with old boot loader
CFW can be installed (consoles with factory firmware 3.56 and older, which means all CECHxx up to CECH-20xx (first lines of 25xx have also old boot loader)) or else You will get perm brick.

My console has "CECH-3004B" on the bottom of itself

So then greenkid1234, Linux is not for You. But, You really loose nothing. It is slow and very limited, still interesting of course but it is not something useful, especially today and especially today networks. Most superior Linux on consoles You can find is on PS4 with 5.05.

Hey there, so I have a PS3 (CECH250XB) with Evilnat 4.88 installed, is it possible to install Red Ribbon on it? Also does it format the HDD when installing Linux or can you dual boot? Would appreciate a reply. Thanks

AFAIK not possible because CFW needs special patches for OOS. Set QA flag and downgrade to latest Rebug Rex or Lite. Then You will need to repartition drive (You will loose all data) and after that You will be able to install it into HDD. You can keeps both environments but if I'm correct, OOS patches causing problems with trophy system. If You are interests in Linux alone, downgrade to 3.15 (if possible of course, factory fw version must be lower or equal to do so) and You will get native support.

I lost interests in this many many years ago, mainly because Linux on PS3 is slow due to hardware access limitations and no one ever solve this puzzle(s).
 
i think Evilnat would have included the patches. you would not be able to install the hard drive however because you would need a special pup file. i recommend to install to usb (or run "live" from usb), because you don't have to format. (running hdd is not that much faster anyway.)

Anyway, let's ask him to be sure...@Evilnat does your 4.88 CFW include the patches needed for OtherOS?

nvm, looking at how complex it is to run Red Ribbon, im no longer interested.. i dont want to format my hard to experience old drivers and a broken OS. thought i could browser YT safely without having my console banned due to CFW Syscalls... im no risk taker so i dont wanna install linux nor watch YT on my CFW ps3 lol.. i only trust Hen cause without activating hen, syscalls are disabled which i like.so yeah, thanks for the replys!

Actually did try a No-PSN YouTube pkg when I first installed CFW, but it doesn't seem to work.. I'm never gonna go online on my Console whatsoever, even if I am, it will probably be on a different one, cause I'm not really interested in getting banned and replacing the CID and stuff like that, I might get a SuperSlim? If there isn't a way to watch YT without having to sign in to PSN. But even if I am, chances are low, I'm currently waiting on a possible PS5 Slim? Cause the PlayStation3 is a little outdated now and many game servers are shutting down so I'm not gonna risk it..
