How to mod a ps3 without bluray drive

Hello to everyone, my friend bought a ps3 that has a bluray drive broken, it is a ps3 slim 2004B with a 4.84 ofw. Since we didnt know about the problem that the bluray cause updating the firmware, we tried to reinstall a 4.84 through xmb before starting to install a cfw, but we got an error and now the console its stucked in recovery mode; and if we try to update it is stucked on "please wait...". We saw that there are cfw with the bluray bypass, there is a way to install a cfw nobd? Thanks to everyone.

The problem is caused because in the firmware installation there is a point where the installer makes a check to the BD controller chip to know his model/version

So you need this chip to pass that point... in your PS3 model is located in the circuit board inside the bluray drive, see this table:
https://www.psdevwiki.com/ps3/Bluray_Drive#Bluray_Drive_Revisions

For CECH-20xx it seems this 2 circuit boards should work:
https://www.psdevwiki.com/ps3/BMD-051
https://www.psdevwiki.com/ps3/BMD-061

Technically this is the only thing you need, and of course the flat/ribbon cables to connect it to your motherboard (i guess are not needed all though)
If for some reason you find a complete bruray drive for cheap, then but it entirelly, but keep in mind the most important thing from it is that board

I have my ps3 with a bluray drive that works, is possible to connect it to the ps3 with the bd broken for flashing the firmware, and then replace it to the first ps3?

Hmmm, i guess it should work, but only if the BD drive is of the same model, or compatible

Right now psdevwiki went offline or had some problem, so i cant tell which ones are compatibles, but take a look later at the links i posted

Initially if both PS3 are slims i guess could be compatible, but not sure, first thing you need to check is if all the connectors of the cables are the same

They are both slim models, mine is 2004A the other ps3 is 2004B

In that case, yes, both BD drives are compatibles with each other :)

I think the firmware installer (inside PS3UPDAT.PUP) is going to do a check to the controller chip in the new BD drive, and the chip will reply his model/version, then the installer will say "ok so you are already updated, i dont have any update for you, thnxbye" and the installer will continue with other parts of the installation

In other words, i think the installer is not going to change any data in the BD drive, and the installation will be completed normaly

My ps3 has a cfw, so i want to know before if after i use the bluray drive in the other console and then i put it again in the "original" ps3 there is a problem caused maybe by the installation of the cfw or something else

The only doubtful thing is the fact the main motherboard and the BD daughterboard are "paired" (or married)
That way of naming them using the relationship of mother-daughter is to indicate that there is a software ID that connects them

But when you install a firmware that ID doesnt changes, actually if at some point you decide to buy one of the circuit boards i suggested from the links you are going to need to do an special procedure known as "remarry"
Just mentioning this incase you was not aware to show that ID doesnt changes so easilly

So... if the ID doesnt changes... and the chip is not going to be "updated" (because im guessing the "donant" PS3 have a modern firmware installed)... then as far i know there are not other stuff that could change in the "donant" BD drive

My ps3 has a cfw 4.84, the other has the 4.84 ofw but to install the cfw starting from this i should use the hfw that allows me to "downgrade" to 4.82 and then install the cfw 4.84 right? Since the bluray drive will pass from cfw 4.84 to ofw 4.84 and then to a 4.82 should i have some problems?

But you dont need to install 4.82
First you install HFW 4.84 ---> NOR patch to cfw (with the web browser exploit) ---> 4.84 CFW

Ok got it, so i should not have problem right? Do you suggest to install a no bd cfw or not?
Well, the reason why you need a noBD CFW at this point is because additionally to the check i been mentioning there is another check made to the BD controller chip everytime you try to boot a game or app, in few words:
Normal CFW without BD controller chip = black screen in all games/apps

And thats a huge annoyance, so you have 2 options, install a noBD firmware or buy the circuit board from the links i posted

Personally i dont like noBD firmwares, i think this is not the way to solve the root of the problem... so in some way are a failure (no offense intended)
But if you want to fix the PS3 for cheap... yeah go for it... and get ready to the restrictions of the noBD firmwares, and prepare to post in forums asking for noBD firmwares the next time sony releases a new firmware update, etc...
