I feel the same way Hugo, specially because I use my PS2 through OSSC.
PS2's PS1 Emulation image quality is better than PS3's PS1 Emulation image quality with OSSC. The pixels / sprites are not blurred at all. And with POPStarter hacks it's really convenient to get rid off the ugly texture dither in PS2.
Maybe if we had a developer interested in hack ps1_emu or net_emu in PS3 we could had a better experience, like implementing scanlines just like Retroarch does. But development in PS3 is scarce nowadays, so there's no hope for improvements.

Getting back to the subject, without pressure, which hacks are you working on this time @hugopocked ? Do you have anything to tease us?

Castlevania Symphony of the Night_(ALL VER) // regress to the previous update for the CPU recompiler cache due to incompatibility with the JAP version, anyway the previous update corrected the game perfectly.

Echo Night 2 - Nemuri no Shihaisha (Japan) // Fixed loop/hang after Playstation logo black screen, I don't know if this was caused by the translation patch or if the original version of the game had the same problem, in any case it should work in both cases, work directly on the version English patched since I don't speak Japanese lol, also corrected defects in the general performance of the game.

Hokuto no Ken - Seikimatsu Kyuuseishu Densetsu (Japan) // I only deleted the $SMOOTH command from the CHEATS.TXT file, I missed it in the copy and paste XD, no change in the correction as such.

Mega Man Legends_(ALL VER) // Updated the CPU recompiler cache, now even more stable, this update was necessary due to very random reports that sometimes when changing weapons in some dungeons it would crash.

Mega Man Legends 2_(ALL VER) // Updated the CPU recompiler cache, now even more stable, this update was necessary due to very random reports that sometimes when changing weapons in some dungeons it would crash.

Moto Racer 2_(ALL VER) // Fixed black polygons or triangles on the circuit floor, caused by GTE cop2r63 (cnt31) - FLAG - Returns any calculation errors, this was not working correctly so I applied a hack for that, I realized that there are quite a few emulators with the same problem with this amazing game that can be played better on the PS2 POPS now, also improve the overall performance of the game.

Tales of Phantasia (Japan) // Complete and improved correction of the hangs/loops caused by the playback of Voices, it also restores said voices and their correct playback, it works in the original JAP version and in unofficial translations.

Twisted Metal 4_(ALL VER) // Another update that helps the overall performance of the game.

Walt Disney World Quest - Magical Racing Tour_(ALL VER) // Improved the overall performance of the game and some graphic details.

Art Camion - Geijutsuden (Japan) // Fixed crashes after the Playstation logo and in the rest of the game, fixed slowdown in the bus customization menu, and in the races.

Brave Fencer Musashi (USA) // Updated only the latest versions of the compatibility modes previously applied, the crash fix did not receive changes since it works perfectly.

Casper_(ALL VER) // Fixed SPU crashes, the game was waiting for a response from the SPU 200h IRQ port.

Chicken Run_(ALL VER) // Fixed all Audio problems, therefore this also solves crashes in certain parts of the game, and improved the performance of the game in general.

Fantastic Four (Japan) SLPS-01034 // Improved the old fix, The problem was permanent audio loops in certain bosses that prevented progress in the story after these parts: I think in the boss Namor the Sub-Mariner, and with the boss Dr. Victor Von Doom, in summary now all is corrected only for 1 Player and only for the (Japanese) version it is very tedious to fix all the versions, luckily all the versions are the same and come in English so there is not a big difference, I also did My own cheat codes for cheaters are in the CHEATS.TXT file, read to know how to activate them with a combination of buttons, I did this so that they do not complain in the future if they do not find cheats for the (Japanese) version.
Later I will try to solve the problems for 2 Players, since for 4 Players it is not necessary because POPS does not support Multitap, In any case, for 2 players the correction of the loop in the part of the Namor the Sub-Mariner boss should work, where I think there will be problems in 2 Players would be in the Final Boss Dr. Victor Von Doom since when several players come, other ones are reproduced combinations of Voices and I have not fixed the combinations only the voices individually when playing with 1 Player, in short the game is now perfectly completeable only for 1 Player.

Hokuto no Ken - Seikimatsu Kyuuseishu Densetsu (Japan) // Removed the old fix and updated with new compatibility modes that I have made since they fix this game just as well, the problem with this game was crashes in certain parts of the story, specifically in loading transitions.

X-Men - Children of the Atom_(ALL VER) // Corrected all the crashes thanks to a compatibility mode that I made called (NoBreak$RAM) so far I have only seen it useful in this game, the POPS started to clean the emulated ram of the PS1 which caused the crash, maybe this whether it is useful for another game, I don't know... I also applied an Overclock of +100 with a GPU Timing -600h customized so that together it improves part of the original slowdowns of this PS1 Port.

GPU SMOOTH FIX

With this you can apply an improved SMOOTH Filter without the defect caused by the $SMOOTH command which was that in some games it activated texture transparencies where it did not belong and graphic errors in others, for example (Resident Evil 3).

*_RAW: When activated, the default texture colors will have maximum brightness, ignoring any color originally set by the game.
*_DITHERING: When activated, the textures will have their dithering effect.
*_SMOOTH: When activated, the textures will have a filter to reduce pixelation.

And today I'm trying to track down an error that comes from the recompiler, apparently it starts writing the recompiled code where the PS1 emulated ram goes WTF, at some point it gets corrupted or overflows the base address to host the next piece of recompiled code, I'm doing this to correct another batch of games lol.

I started making this list that I am presenting today a few days ago because I am already forgetting everything I do lol, so what I have improved and fixed before these dates are even more new things that I have done, but I will see if a One of these days I start to remember lol.

I don't know if you remember, you are busy I know, but I told you once if you could fix Mickey Wild Adventure (it's an improved Mickey Mania game from the 16 bit era). or if you cannot now, please put it in a queue list, LOL. You don't need to rush, I'm patient.
Bugs: The game acts weird after you select Start Game. It keeps loading forever and music starts to play randomly from track to track and it doesn't pass the loading screen.
But, if you leave the controller and watch the demo, the game seems to play well.
Also there's a PAL to NTSC + 60hz patch available in romhacking.net

That's it, keep the good work as always!

PS: By the way, do you know if it's possible to use USB mouse in POPs to work as PS1 mouse and play games like Warcraft or Dune? Maybe Die Hard or Time Crisis (I don't know if these last ones support mouse).

I sent you an email, that Mickey game seems like a loop caused by the audio tracks, there could be a solution later, I'll give it a chance to check.

Regarding support with other peripherals, at the moment I cannot give an answer to that because I have not done tests on that.

Hello, Formula One, I don't remember if I reviewed the one from '95, does it hang after the Playstation logo or right at the start of a race?

I already have Kensei: Sacred Fist installed and it works well applying the compatibility mode 0x01 and 0x04 of krHACKen and the compatibility mode that I made that applies an Overclock to the emulated CPU of +20, this overclock can be found on the first page of this thread in the package download (2023-08-11).

I already have Kensei: Sacred Fist installed and it works well applying the compatibility mode 0x01 and 0x04 of krHACKen and the compatibility mode that I made that applies an Overclock to the emulated CPU of +20, this overclock can be found on the first page of this thread in the package download (2023-08-11).

Formula One hangs just before the main menu is loaded. So it's after the Playstation logo. It's definitely the '95 one.

I will check the fix for Kensei. Thank you.

Kensei now works great. Although I think maybe having on compatibility mode 0x02 instead of 0x01 gives slightly better sound corrections... otherwise 0x01 and 0x02 are the same.

I was experimenting with Formula One '95 and I am sure the reason why it freezes just before the main menu is because this is when the game starts to play the sound of a car engine revving, and I believe it is this sound that causes the game to freeze. I noticed when playing the game on EPSXE that this engine revving sound makes the game stutter for a few seconds before it loads to the main menu, but Popstarter does not seem to know how to get passed the engine sound unlike EPSXE. So I thought maybe if I could "block out" the sound with a hex-editor (instead of rebuilding the game as that is more complicated) then the game will load to the main menu, but the engine sound file is not a XA file or a music track file so I don't know where to locate the file. I just thought maybe this could help you in your work.

Or do you think this issue can be solved with one of your "Trojan" fixes?

Hello, here I will leave the correction for F1 95 that I just made:

The game was blocked due to incompatibility with the use of the serial I/O port, IRQ SIO emulation failure, the easiest solution was to remove this part of the game code since it is not necessary in POPS.

I made this correction especially for a friend in Ireland and I want to see the tests of other users, I made the correction for all versions, but I tested only the (Rev 1 USA) and (Rev 1 EUR), remember that you need to merge the tracks of audio in the game image with CDmage or some other program so that you do not have audio problems, and be careful with CHEATS.TXT and TROJAN_#.BIN files, they should not be placed in the main POPS path as they can create conflicts when patches are applied individually in the VMC folder of the game, be careful with file fragmentation and bad sectors on your devices so that they do not report false alarms, and all my patches are created to be used in the latest version of Popstarter so make sure you downloaded the latest 2019 version.

@hugopocked Another game affected by this issue was Syphon Filter on the dinosaur exhibit level where Gabe wears a suit.

Attention: When using these compatibility modes, make sure that you do not have the Popstarter's integrated $SMOOTH command activated since it conflicts with these improvements, (Delete it Completely from the CHEATS.TXT file) since even when it is deactivated without the $ symbol it will still be causes conflict, I realized while debugging it seems to be activated halfway.

I guess that explains why it worked in EPSXE but not Popstarter, since EPSXE does not involve an I/O serial port. Interesting. Yes, I use the 2019 version of Popstarter and also the latest BIN to VCD convertor, which is CUE2POPS 2.3. I find IMGBURN works best when it comes to merging the audio tracks. However, I find CDMAGE Beta useful for modifying PS1 games in a very basic manner, such as replacing files inside the BIN image after extraction with similar sized files in identical file formats, by using the "Import File" option.

hi. I noticed you have no fix for racing lagoon. I tried the game on my PS2 (SCPH-70003) and many PS2s from fat to slims, via USB, HDD and SMB but always the same problem. if you are interested about the game to fix:
racing lagoon is a racing RPG that has 3 parts:
1) talking with people
2) free roam around city
3) racing
popstarter can make the game work in first 2 parts of the game, however when you talk with people game run in slow-motion sometimes. the actual problem of the game is when you enter to any race in the game, after loading screen it stay at black screen forever so race cannot be loaded. so I can confirm the game freezes between loading screen and the moment race as level loaded. between these there is a black screen and the game freezes there without any kind of response

to figure out I basically tested the game in any part of the story mode by importing save data from epsxe as I played the game to the VMC file popstarter uses and tested if every race has this black screen problem and yeah it has the same problem. every race, it's like RAM and/or VRAM of PS2 is not enough or something. I can talk to everyone in the game, free roam everywhere the game offers but cannot start any race without it freeze

I basically used every fix you have for popstarter. I basically used every possible combinations, even for the fixes for other games but it's always the same problem. every race in the game cannot be loaded therefore impossible to progress in the game

the game is a japanese game, also has english patch version. I tried with legit copies of the game and turned them into VCD file but always the same issue. cannot make the disc play because my PS2's eye gone blind long time ago, that's why I use OPL and popstarter

my PS2 can run PS1, PS2, MSX, NES, SNES, SEGA Genesis, GBA games just fine. it's just this game problematic lol. if I had extracted the assets of the game and rebuilded as PS2 game by now I would be able to play the game but since you are dedicated and know your stuff I better ask if you can fix the game

What I deduce is a CD emulation problem, since if corrupt data is loaded there can be many problems, I'm going to see if in these months I focus on CD emulation.

Hello Hugo. I noticed that most of the games have received a fix, that's great. As far as I'm concerned there are very few games still to be fixed. I tried your free fixes, I was wondering if by purchasing the paid fixes there might be some new mode or fix that fixes the problems of the following games:

- Winning Eleven 4:
This game has micro stutters during the match. Using mode 4 the stutter is reduced but it doesn't eliminate the problem, making it unpleasant to play a frenetic game like this with micro stutters. The exact same problem is on the entire Winning Eleven series (WE 2002, WE 2001, WE 2000, WE 4) and on NHL 2000. So perhaps a fix for WE 4 could also solve the other games with the same problem. I post videos showing the problem, comparing the original game with the game on popstarter. I'll take Winning Eleven 2002 as an example:

Initial background differences (I don't know if it could be related to the micro stutters during the match. The initial background appears "problematic" on popstarter): "I don't have permission to post a link"

Video 1 (original game that flows smoothly):

Video 2 (some moments on popstarter where the gameplay and audio freezes for a moment)

- Who Wants To Be A Millionaire:
I would be interested in the Italian version (Chi Vuol Essere Milionario Seconda Edizione) but when testing the Spanish version both versions have the same exact problem (¿Quiere ser millonario?) so perhaps a fix could solve the problem for both the Italian and Spanish versions. I haven't tested the English or American versions. The problem is as follows and I also uploaded some videos to show it: The game has graphical and sound glitches. The sound rarely works well for some seconds, most of the time the narrator's voice is in slow motion and jerky. I uploaded a video showing the problems: "I don't have permission to post a link"

- Pink Panther (the game is playable without music)
- Mickey's Wild Adventure (the game hangs on loading screen in main mode)
- Space Jam (graphic glitches on some characters)
- Nba Jam Tournament Edition (black screen on startup. With the file Trojan_7.bin the problem is solved but there are several corrupted sound glitches and others that cannot be heard)
