I found a fat 60gb launch BC PS3 on firmware 2.35! Is there any good reason to keep it so low?

Hey sorry if this is a dumb question but I just bought a fat PS3, the original 60 GB US model that has full PS2 backwards compatibility. I bought it at a charity auction thing in my local area for $150. Seemed like a good deal.

I turned it on, hoping it was on an older firmware, and boy was I in for a shock. It's on 2.35! I was merely hoping for 4.84 or lower!

Any way is there any good reason these days to keep it on such a low firmware? Or would the smart thing to do be updating it to 4.84 and using Rebug CEX CFW 4.84.2? By the way the only reason I chose 4.84 is because as far as I can tell it's the last firmware that you can use the full Rebug CFW on. Any later I believe can only install the "lite" version of Rebug.

So anyway I was just wondering if there was any good reasons to keep it on 2.x that I might be missing. I would hate to have upgraded it only to regret it later, which is why I am coming to you fine folks for advice.

Thank you in advance!

No reason.
Even if You want back, You can do it anytime (with QA flag set, which can be easy on/off via Rebug Toolbox (the build-in app into this CFW)).

All Rebugs are "full CFW". Difference between Lite and Rex/D-Rex is Rexes are mix of retail and debug firmwares, while lite are only retail. If You do not need any of DEX features (like TMAPI, trophies unlocking, Fake Save Data Owner, debug updates etc.), then You can use Lite (it have newer Cobra, the only benefit, yet still is not the newest one which i.e automatically converting RAPs to RIFs and unlocking "C00 games").

Thank you so much!

Are you saying there is a CFW that will automatically license/activate PKGs even without a RAP file?

I would update to the latest CFW, Evilnat's 4.87 for example and also get webman mod on there, considering it's a launch ps3. They're known for getting extremely hot and with webman mod, you can control the fan so it keeps the temps at a considerable level. Also, i would advise to open it up and give it a good clean from the inside out.

Thanks so much. I have a bunch of Arctic Silver so this will be easy for me :)

What's the benefit of Evilnat? Everywhere else I read recommended Rebug. What are the differences?

As for Webman mod, is it true Webman mod is outdated and I should be using sMan instead?

It's more up to date then Rebug, although you can choose what you like.

Webman MOD is still updated frequently to this day, i would say its a must for anyone getting into CFW.

It looks like Webman Mod loads PS1, PS2, and PS3 ISOs right from the XMB. I have no idea why I thought I had to use sMan for that. And it looks like Webman mod doesn't crash on PS1 games like sMan does! :)

Best to jailbreak it first, the firmware can be downgraded/reverted any time in the future.
You should also check how long it's been used by plugging the HDD into your PC with a sata to USB adapter then downloading a program called crystaldiskinfo.
Alternatively you should download the latest version of webman mod and find the syscon usage stats.

btw, @DaddyLongLegs , you can check the rap key by dropping the rap into a hex editor or with ps3 tools. the key is the only thing in one of those. I wrote a small, unneeded tutorial on creating rap files, but the content id and rap key must be correct to unlock the game or content.

I found a system on 1.54 that had never been used online and only used to play nfs carbon, motorstorm, resistance and alot of ps2 games. I accidently updated it to 1.82 when I decided to play dirt but for the most part its all pretty much the same apart from me opening it to replace the paste under the IHS.

Do you play the PS2 or PS3 version of Carbon? Which one is better??

honestly I preferred the 360 version though there wasn't much difference other then one is in HD and has little more detail such as mirror etc other then that I don't think there was much of a difference between the ps2 and ps3 version's. Though I can not remember what the online was like on the two versions and I havn't played the ps2 version since 2008 so it would be hard to compare, the xbox 360 version of need for speed most wanted I know for a fact had a higher quality image and overall was smoother to play then the ps2 version. So likely about the same since MW and Carbon graphics wise where the same.

Though last I played of the ps3 version was last year I think and I still enjoyed the game, though they all look pretty good to me, was also playing alot of ps2 version of nfs underground 2 because I really like that game, though think the PC version looks better but that's to be expected.
