I am just going to throw this out there in hopes that it may save someone trouble in the future. I have several jailbroken PS3's but i wanted to make one for my adult son so he could enjoy my ps1 library on his hd tv (i have a large collection of ps1 and ps2 games and i run those consoles off a 36" sony wega- but he doesn't own a CRT so the PS3 is a great way to play them).
I picked up a factory reset ps3 model cech-2501b on OFW 4.85 and i noticed it kind of booted a little slow, but it seemed to play games fine. i was able to install the exploit fine, but i had issues installing the custom firmware (i was trying to install evilnat 4,87,2) but it kept failing and saying that the USB was corrupt or unreadable. I came across a post on reddit where this was being caused by a controller that was under charged see->

that tip allowed me to get the firmware installed (in safe mode)- although i had to actually unplug the controller after pressing start and select. the next issue still remained though- the boot time was 20-25 seconds compared to like 10 seconds on my other PS3's. and when i installed an external HDD to begin installing games the system would slow to a crawl and barely run.
i installed a handful of games on the external HDD with a different PS3 (because it was faster) but when i plugged it into the new PS3 it struggled to read the drive and failed to even pick up some on the games in multiman's menu.
I read that the PS3's usb ports were notoriously under powered so i bought a powered USB HDD, i loaded it up with games for my son to enjoy - from my good PS3) but when i installed it on the bad PS3 it really struggled. boot times for the system were over 30 seconds, multiman took about a minute to load, the games populated extremely slowly. I started thinking that the problem was evilnats CFW.
My next step was to reinstall OFW and start over. It was a struggle to get the PS3 to read the OFW so i again had to use safe mode. after that i went back into the safe mode and restored PS3 OFW 4.87 (so that was 2 installs- one of which formatted the HDD). I figured that would rule out a bad internal HDD and bad CFW. then i went through the jail break process again, this time using ferrox 4.87 with cobra. I trusted ferrox and have used it before.
some of the custom software which prevents you from updating in the PS3 update via USB menu must have still been in the PS3's firmware because i still could not update except in safe mode- and again not with the controller installed. but i eventually got ferrox 4.87 installed, unfortunately the boot times were still slow and it still struggled with a POWERED or UNPOWERED USB device.
At this point i started suspecting a bad usb power chip or a bad south bridge, i thought that the power chip (or voltage regulator) should be ruled out with the externally powered USB- but i wasn't 100% sure- so i went out and bought 2 things: firstly i bought a USB port tester for like 17 bucks, and second i bought a 1tb HDD.
I watched a bunch of videos and read a lot of posts here about the south bridge acting up or failing. i felt it could be my issue, but i was puzzled because it could still read USB data consistently just very slowly and only if no other usb device was being used at the same time.
I checked the ports with the USB tester and their voltage and amperage was very close to my good PS3 (5.03VDC up to 500Mah) so i was confident that it should work. so instead of disassembling it and screwing with the voltage regulator or trying to reflow the south bridge i threw the new HDD in it.
the new HDD fixed the problem and it boots extremely fast and multiman populates the USB fast now. it plays games fine from the USB HDD (powered or unpowered) and i couldn't be happier.
I am still not sure if it had a bad internal HDD, or some type of corruption that the PS3 restore was unable to fix? or maybe the store where i bought it didn't restore it properly? but at least it's not a problem with the south bridge. and the usb ports should be protected because my son will have a nice self powered USB HDD.
I hope this helps someone else.
