PS3 Installing Red Ribbon Linux to HDD on Rebug 4.82.12 REX...

Hello,

I am having issues installing Red Ribbon Linux on my PS3 Slim (CECH-2001a with a 160GB hard drive upgrade). I am running Rebug 4.82.12 REX which was installed from 4.82 OFW using ps3xploit. To help determine if I have done something wrong, I will list what I did in order to attempt to install Red Ribbon Linux.

1. Downloaded Rebug, and used MFW tool to set the Level 1 option for OtherOS++ to 4.xx / 22GB allocated space.

2. Installed the firmware I patched to my PS3 using ps3xploit HDD NOR method.

3. After Rebug started up, I put the PS3 into recovery mode and selected "Restore PS3 system" so that the hard drive would get formatted / partitioned correctly.

4. Booted up, checked the available space, which said something like xxx GB / 139 GB.

5. Installed the Rebug Toolkit pkg from the HDD (it comes with the firmware, ready to install)

6. Opened up Rebug, resized the VFLASH for OtherOS install, rebooted and went back in there, and had it install the petitboot bin from my flash drive.

7. Started up OtherOS, popped in my Red Ribbon Linux CD, which was literally just the ISO burned straight to it. Instead of booting it right away, I went into the shell and ran create_hdd_region.sh from /tmp/petitboot/mnt/sda1, it ran successfully so I then ran reboot, and started up OtherOS from Rebug Toolkit.

8. Instead of going into the shell this time, I started Red Ribbon Linux from the LiveCD, and opened the installer once my desktop environment was ready. I followed everything until it asked me to format the region of the HDD that would be needed. This is where I ran into a problem - auto formatting wouldn't do anything, seemed to spit out some error about something being out of range, so then I tried manually formatting, but noticed that the size available to format was something like < 2MB. I do not know why this happened, I have tried multiple things to try and get it working but none have worked so far. I do not want to install or boot from a USB pendrive for the sole reason being that a keyboard and mouse will need to be hooked up at all times, and for decluttering.

If anyone can help me figure out what's wrong, I would greatly appreciate it. :P
This is probably obvious and I'm just being a complete idiot. By the way, I have tried following the tutorial from this forum for installing it, and the ROM that is given for you to flash just doesn't work (PS3 keeps telling me the data is corrupted when I go to install it).

Hello! I have a problem with Reb Ribbon not connecting to the internet. I've tried a few troubleshooting methods with no avail. Can anyone shed some light on the topic. I would like to connect to wifi as opposed to a wired connection. Thanks!!

I'm going to go through that tutorial that was linked. Would I be able to update to 4.82.2 REX after I get everything working though?

That is the one that I based my spin of this off of. The firmware they use for some reason wont work when I apply the update, saying it is corrupt...
Depends which one you are using my man, if you use CEX, you download both packages and install the patched REX.

You're most likely on CEX if you never converted your system.

Ok now it seems to work, I was able to install that firmware via DEX, but why the firmware I used claimed to have OtherOS++ support when it doesn't create the hdd regions correctly?

You're meant to install the firmware I patched and restore the ps3 via safe mode so that it allocates some hard drive space for OtherOS, but still needs it's regions created properly, that's why once you boot into petitboot, you run the create_hdd_region.sh script so that it properly creates the partition so that it's usable.

Talking about linux, is possible to enabled the native OTHER OS back? i mean some time ago i installed an old mod with a sysconf.sprx (very old) so i got the entries in my system settings, not exatcly a new item, but in the same place it was before( overriding the new item), it opens but no text due to missing text files in the rco?, ofc we will need to patch the vsh too

but it seems not thar hard for a person good enough using IDA PRO or it is way harder than this?

Hi, can i run a diferent os? Like manjaro? What iso i need to download? I rly like manjaro if its possible plz help

but how can i install it? im on rebug 4.82 // can i install it from usb pendrive ?
it is better to install TO the usb drive. no need to format the hard drive or use older firmware. (also can lose linux partition if you update to new pup without patches and then use the wrong recovery option). BTW controller will not work in petitboot. and make sure you use correct petitboot for your ps3.

Updating CFW will not kill Linux, on HDD. It will kill however after using Restore PS3 System if CFW doesn't have patches for i.e partitioning (setting dev_hdd2 and setting dev_flash5). And preparing environment for Linux on internal HDD, demand reformatting (I could be wrong, last time I'm playing with it was 3.55).
