Hello,
I am having issues installing Red Ribbon Linux on my PS3 Slim (CECH-2001a with a 160GB hard drive upgrade). I am running Rebug 4.82.12 REX which was installed from 4.82 OFW using ps3xploit. To help determine if I have done something wrong, I will list what I did in order to attempt to install Red Ribbon Linux.
1. Downloaded Rebug, and used MFW tool to set the Level 1 option for OtherOS++ to 4.xx / 22GB allocated space.
2. Installed the firmware I patched to my PS3 using ps3xploit HDD NOR method.
3. After Rebug started up, I put the PS3 into recovery mode and selected "Restore PS3 system" so that the hard drive would get formatted / partitioned correctly.
4. Booted up, checked the available space, which said something like xxx GB / 139 GB.
5. Installed the Rebug Toolkit pkg from the HDD (it comes with the firmware, ready to install)
6. Opened up Rebug, resized the VFLASH for OtherOS install, rebooted and went back in there, and had it install the petitboot bin from my flash drive.
7. Started up OtherOS, popped in my Red Ribbon Linux CD, which was literally just the ISO burned straight to it. Instead of booting it right away, I went into the shell and ran create_hdd_region.sh from /tmp/petitboot/mnt/sda1, it ran successfully so I then ran reboot, and started up OtherOS from Rebug Toolkit.
8. Instead of going into the shell this time, I started Red Ribbon Linux from the LiveCD, and opened the installer once my desktop environment was ready. I followed everything until it asked me to format the region of the HDD that would be needed. This is where I ran into a problem - auto formatting wouldn't do anything, seemed to spit out some error about something being out of range, so then I tried manually formatting, but noticed that the size available to format was something like < 2MB. I do not know why this happened, I have tried multiple things to try and get it working but none have worked so far. I do not want to install or boot from a USB pendrive for the sole reason being that a keyboard and mouse will need to be hooked up at all times, and for decluttering.
If anyone can help me figure out what's wrong, I would greatly appreciate it. :P
This is probably obvious and I'm just being a complete idiot. By the way, I have tried following the tutorial from this forum for installing it, and the ROM that is given for you to flash just doesn't work (PS3 keeps telling me the data is corrupted when I go to install it).
