PS4 Introducing myself

I've just registered and I'm a total newbie who doesn't yet even own any Playstation model console at all. I'm only allowed to post in this forum until my status is upgraded. I'm considering buying a PS4 or a PS5. I recently watched a video about how amazing it is to buy a PS3 at the moment, but I'm not sure about that. I know that the PS4 CPU isn't backwards compatible with earlier PlayStations. I think I'd like to play Cyberpunk 2077. I hate Windows OS! I've completely avoided the system of owning consoles with games that manufacturers seem to charge whatever they want for. At the moment, I'm making my way through various retro games on the MISTer device for various platforms, but I hope someone on this site can advise me which model Playstation to buy and what to do with it.

Hi there. It really depends on your tastes. All PlayStation consoles have great games. If you specifically want to play Cyberpunk 2077, it's available only on the PS4 or PS5, so you could start over there. I myself own all PlayStation consoles except the PS5, and I have an insane collection of physical games (1600+) so I believe to be well informed about which games each console has to offer. I consider PS1 and PS2 to be "retro" consoles, the kind of games you'll see on there being quite different than "modern" consoles, while PS3/PS4/PS5 are "modern" consoles as their games feel different compared to PS1/PS2.

Also note that if you are looking into buying brand new, at the time of writing this, only the PS4 Slim, PS5 Slim and PS5 Pro are still in production, all other consoles are discontinued, even the PS4 Pro.

If you willing to play Cyberpunk 2077, buy PS5P or XSX (Xboxes are dead now). On base PS5/XSS models and PS4, experience in this game is mediocre at best.

Thanks for your reply! I've heard a lot about Cyberpunk 2077, so that as well as the genre make me want to play it. I wonder if there are older games which are fairly similar, though?

I had no idea that PS4 consoles were still being produced. I want to buy a PS4 with a firmware no higher than 11.0 so I can jailbreak it. I don't think this is possible with the PS5. Games consoles with proprietary cartridges, disks, or controlled networks are just a licence to print money.

I currently own a MISTer and a MIST set up as a Minimig AGA Amiga. I've been catching up on what I've missed by not buying consoles with software only on cartridge or securely protected optical discs or protected downloads.

Thanks for your reply! I don't want to buy an Xbox because I hate Microsoft. I think I'll get a PS4. As for you saying the experience is "mediocre", that means nothing to me because I've been avoiding all recent console games. A couple of days ago I actually played "Tomb Raider" (original edition) for the first time, as well as Madden '94" both on my MISTer using the PSX (PS1) Core and I thought that was really good. I'm just about to set up a Linux distro with Steam on my MacBook Pro Retina i7 16Gb model 11,2 with Iris Pro graphics (2014). Can you explain what kind of experience Cyberpunk 2077 on the PS4 is compared with Tomb Raider (original edition) on PS1, or compared with Steam and Windows gaming with Intel Iris graphics?

Things you ask to compare cannot be compared in any way. Totally different stuff.

What I have in mind is technical state of the game. Cyberpunk 2077 is well known from being buggy hell. This game engine cannot handle this game and not only many graphical stuff was drastically lowered but also plenty bugs are related to memory leaking and low memory. I finished v1.50 (so called mastered) on PS4 and it was acceptable, minus some physics bugs, gfx bugs and few critical bugs which fortunately I find a way to bypass. PS5P for it is strongly recommended.

Tomb Raider was great but tank control type controlling a character was horrible even at that time of release. I always hates that but game itself is top tier in its era.

After thinking about which Playstation to buy for some time, I've just bought a PS3 from eBay, but haven't done much research into the hardware yet, although I know the CPU is PowerPC based. I bought it because I want to explore some games from the period after the Nintendo N64 (released in 1998), which is the latest console that my MISTer can simulate, apart from the GameBoy Advance. I still have to get a mains lead, and a controller for it, though. I'm also considering buying a PS4 which I want to jailbreak, or even two PS4s, one to jailbreak and the other to use the Playstation Network. I don't really like FPS games, though. My tastes have changed and I think I now like strategy games, beat 'em ups, some classic arcade games, RPGs, and adventures. I'm also a fan of sci fi, so any games with sci fi themes would probably interest me. The actual PS3 I've bought is a Sony PlayStation 3 Fat CECHG03 40GB, which is a model that's backwards compatible with the PS2. However, it wasn't advertised as being backwards compatible. I don't know if it's had an update which makes it incompatible with the PS2 or if I can do a factory reset to undo this. The eBay listing didn't show any display, so I don't know what firmware version it has. I'd like to hear what you think is the best or cheapest way to get games for this PS3. I don't want to buy lots of games on It seems to be still supported by the Playstation Network, but the PS2 isn't. The 40Gb drive size sounds really small nowadays, so how can I upgrade it? I've upgraded hard drives with SSDs on computers.

GuilloteTesla I did a search before buying it, which said that it is PS2 backwards compatible! Why do you say it's not? Where's the evidence? There may be some conflicting information out there. Anyway, it only cost me €35 or US$41, so it's not serious.

No, it's not. The evidence is in the console's tech specifications and brochure (which you can find online), on the Internet, on Wikipedia, on the PS3 DevWiki, here on the forums (by using the search box).

https://www.psdevwiki.com/ps3/CECHGxx

Only models that have PS2 backwards compatibility are: CECHA/B (EE+GS) and CECHC/E (GS).

OK, so as it's not compatible it looks like I'll have to buy a PS2 as well for PS2 gaming. Of course I'm a total newbie to PlayStations of any model. I don't want to buy lots of games on disc, due to me not having much storage space left, so what are my alternatives to disk based games for the PS3 and PS2? I think they may be downloads from the Playstation Network for the PS3, but not for the PS2 because it seems to no longer be supported.

You can dump your PS2 discs to ISO images, and mount them with WebMAN MOD + PS2Classics.

That's the way to play PS2 games on non-backwards compatible consoles. Yet it still is emulation across all PS3 models, so it's always best to grab a PS2 console.

Given what you just said, try the Mass Effect games. Mass Effect 2 and Mass Effect 3 are available as standalone, but if you want to play Mass Effect 1 on the PS3 you must buy the Mass Effect Trilogy pack.

And yes, for PS2 games, only the early PS3s can read PS2 discs natively (from CECHA to CECHE). Even if you own one of these consoles, I still recommend you just get a PS2 instead for PS2 games because those early PS3 are extremely unreliable and the games don't run that well on them anyways from my testing.

A jailbroken PS3 can run PS2 games ISOs but the performace is bad and many games will lag.

As to where to get PS3 games for cheap, this is highly dependant on where you live. In North America, usually from yard sales and buying lots on Facebook Marketplace (or other websites) is usually the cheapest. Buying games individually online from websites like EBay is usually the most expensive way to buy games. I do NOT recommend the website lukiegames.com as they are scammers (they sell incomplete PS3 games advertised as "CIB").

I received my PS3 five days ago now. It has 4.92 firmware and a 40Gb HDD, so I'll probably have to install a large SSD soon.

Unfortunately, some of my posts on the PS3 forum have been moved here, where I don't think many PS3 fans will see them.

I'm still getting used to the PS3 type controllers, which I've never used before.

I downloaded two RPG demos, but only one of them runs. I had more than one copy of these, and no matter if I'm logged into the Playstation Store or not, they just keep saying "Installing..." when I try to run them.

I bought six disc based games from a second hand shop, then had to return two because one ("Civilization: Revolutions") gave an error code and the other ("DJ Hero") requires a special controller, then I got two replacements. I've now got "Aliens vs Predator", "Aliens: Colonial Marines", "Dead Space", "Game of Thrones", "Assassins Creed", and "Madden 11". I've managed to eject discs which got stuck. Obviously, I like strategy and sci fi themed games.

Unfortunately, I haven't managed to make any progress in these games, because I soon come up against obstacles I can't get past. In both of the Aliens games these are locked doors. In "Aliens vs Predator" the door comes up right after the long intro. I can't even blast my way through it and in the other directions there's just darkness. I managed to change the hangar bay door status to "Open Door" in "Aliens: Colonial Marines", but I still couldn't open it, then I wandered off, but found northing else to do. I'll be searching everywhere for information about how to get past these doors unless someone on here can help. I've hardly played "Game of Thrones" at all yet.

On "Madden 11", I've played one full game where I lost by 8 to 13. I've played previous versions on various platforms. I think it's much better than the real life game, because almost all of it is action, instead of stopping and talking most of the time. I think the NFL should change their rules to make the game as fast paced and short as Madden, instead of having the ball in play for only about 15 minutes for the whole game, which usually lasts 2.5-3 hours.

I don't know if I can save any of my game progress yet. I used the card format utility, but was confused that it only offered PS format and PS2 format cards. I had to leave "Madden 11" running in pause mode while I went off to do other things because of this. I couldn't find any option to save my progress.

I've recently seen some videos which make it look very easy to install CFW, followed by ManaGunZ, which also enables PS2 and PSP games to run, but I think I might just stick to PS3 games. In future I'll just post on the PS3 forum and I must ask moderators not to move my posts into the PS4 forum. I don't know if I'll ever bother getting a PS4.

Most PS3 games will save automatically. You can find your save files on the PS3 main menu inside Saved Data Utility (PS3). The Card Format Utility is only for PS1 and PS2 games and is never used for PS3 games.

When it comes to your issues completing the Aliens games, I've never played these games so I don't know.

OK, thanks! I'll check there for saved game data.

I've also had a problem with "Madden 11" as well as an earlier version of Madden on another platform which I played on my MISTer. After playing the first quarter, I found that in the second quarter I was switched to playing as the other team instead! I think this is because of an option I selected somewhere. How can I avoid this happening again?

Games can suffering from bugs you know. Be sure your game is always patched (if patch(es) available). I so called mastered Aliens: Colonial Marines and didnt experienced any problems.

Also never play games from a mounted folder. Use always disc images.
