PS3 IRISMAN v4.87.1: Adds support for mounting Compressed ISO's ( ZIP, RAR or 7-Zip)

Following some of the recent advancements made to webMAN MOD , PlayStation 3 Homebrew developer @aldostools has now looked to incorporate a new feature in the PS3 Homebrew (CFW/PS3HEN) f backup manager known as IRISMAN. It's currently a new and experimental feature added in the recent release of v4.87.1 that provides the backup manager the ability to mount compressed ISO in .zip / .7z / .rar formats. This features supports the PS3's Internal HDD or a FAT32 external storage device for PS1 / PSP / PS2 / PS3/ DVD / BluRay ISO's..

PS3 IRISMAN v4.84.png

  • IRISMAN 4.87.1
    • Added support for mount ZIP, RAR or 7-Zip archives stored in FAT32 or in the internal HDD. The archive is extracted to a temporary folder then the extracted ISO is mounted by IRISMAN as usual
    • Includes Movian 5.0.714
    • Includes Mamba 8.4

.This is a new experimental build of IRISMAN 4.87.1:
    https://www.mediafire.com/file/09mbz1jamnbcw0z/IRISMAN_4.87.1.pkg/file

It allows to mount compressed zip files containing only one ISO image (CUE/BIN, ISO, IMG or MDF) without subfolders.
The zip file should be stored in PSXISO, PSPISO, PS2ISO, PS3ISO, DVDISO or BDISO of FAT32 or internal HDD.

The zip is extracted temporarily to /dev_hdd0/tmp/extract then the extracted ISO is mounted normally by IRISMAN. Indeed the extracted PS1 games are booted directly on CFW.

The extraction time is directly proportional to the size of the extracted ISO. The feature is ideal for small PS1 and PSP games which usually have a good compression ratio and the image file can be decompressed in few seconds.

Some PS2 games could be convenient in .zip too. Especially the small CDs and DVD games that can be extracted quickly.

PS3, BD and DVD ISOs are also supported (untested). However, the compression ratio of these formats is usually low and require a long wait time for decompression due their larger size.

Thanks to @DeViL303 for the idea and @bucanero for the zip library.

Maybe you should try other settings. 7zip worked fine for me.

Even with 40MB you're still saving 160MB!!! Much more than when the feature didn't exist :-p

Unfortunately, I only have access to an Android tablet, no PC. But yeah, 160 MB is pretty good.

How about PS2 games? Are 2-3 gigs worth compressing (taking into account the time needed to decompress them)?

You could test compressing one or two games to check if the decompression time is acceptable.

I personally don't think it worth the wait.

Using a different app (RAR) I compressed the iso to RAR, down to 25 MB, and Irisman extracted it. Strangely, I compressed another iso 3 MBs smaller than this one, and it only compressed it to 80 MB. I guess contents of the file matter as well as the size.

I theorize that as long as the iso is around 1gig (maybe a little more, probably a little less), it would be worth it. I will test some more when I can.

Soldier of Fortune Gold Edition - 736 MB -> 324 MB RAR

Took roughly 2 minutes 10 seconds to extract. Hmm, may have to drop the 1 gig suggestion to 500-750 MB, this would limit the usefulness to PS1, small-ish PSP, and the tiniest PS2 games. Actually, it may be faster to just store the ISOs on a flash drive and just copy them over when needed.

The dream would be to load ISOs without needing to extract them, but that would probably be done from the firmware/payload side.

Yes. That probably would need the development of a proxy sprx like the one for netiso or rawseciso. The zlib (or any other) library need to be implemented in the plugin to allow decompression when sectors are read like in CSO format.

I tried to implement a custom format that removed blank sectors (all bytes 00), but I had issues getting it to work in Mamba. So I had to abandon the idea. The custom format used an index table listing the range of blank sectors. The table was checked by the payload before read the data in the ISO; if the sector was found in one of the ranges the sector was filled with null. Otherwise, the sector in the file was calculated and read normally from the file. The custom ISO didn't have compression, but the removed blank sectors reduced some PSP ISOs in 30%~60%.

I need some help with irisman, my ps3 console was in hen 3.0.2 with irisman 4.86.3 (and worked fine) today update to hen 3.0.3 and i tried install irisman 4.88 but the console showed me the message "there is not enough space in the system storage" and don't understand, there is 1 Gb left in hard disk ps3 console.

Try deleting IRISMAN and check if the message still appear.
IRISMAN may be using additional for cache, covers or temporary files.

If I recall correctly, that message appears when there is 500MB or less.

I recommend that free more space deleting some unused games or game data.
Also consider installing a larger HDD or using the PS3 HDD Unlocker to gain +7% of extra HDD space.

Already did that, i deleted unused games/game data. My ps3 HDD storage is 1 Tera and exactly 1.5 Giga left. Tried install IRISMAN 4.87 and gives me the same message, but donwloaded 4.86.3 version, installed and it works. I Think that is a menor compatibility bug with 4.87, 4.88 IRISMAN versions with last HEN or something in my ps3 configuration, curios fact.

IRISMAN both versions 4.88 and 4.87.1 cannot use file manager mount ps3 game ISO stored on external NTFS hard drive, the disc icon will not be displayed on the XMB,4.87 or earlier versions do not have this issue

I tested mounting a PS3ISO from NTFS using IRISMAN 4.88 and it worked fine on my Rebug 4.86.1 LITE. It mounted from File Manager and from Game menu of IRISMAN.

Are you sure that your game work on NTFS? Does it work in multiMAN or webMAN?
Was the ISO built properly? Isn't your NTFS device too fragmented?
Is it not mounting only from File Manager? Or is it not mounting from game menu either?
Are you using PS3HEN or CFW? What version?
Did you try deleting IRISMAN and reinstalling it again?

As you can see your post lacks of enough information to trace any potential issue.

I spent some time and it seems to have found the problem, the reason for this problem is that in the 4.88 and 4.87.1 versions, the folder name must be PS3ISO(external NTFS HDD), not other names, otherwise the disc icon will not be displayed on the XMB, but the version before 4.87.1 does not have this problem, also I tested the managunz file manager, and the iso can be mounted normally(any name of the folder),hope the above information can be useful for you to fix related issues

I will check if I can re-add support for mounting from other folders, but the PS3 ISO games must be in stored in the folder PS3ISO. That's not new.

I know that if you want to display the game icon directly on the IRISMAN game menu, you need to put the ISO in the PS3ISO folder, but before version 4.87.1, you can also use the file manager to directly mount ISO stored on the NTFS HDD in a folder with any name, however, after version 4.87, it doesn't work anymore, these are the main points I want to make clear

I found the bug (there was a = instead of == in a value comparison) in the mount function.

I have updated the PKG. You can download it from Github or Brewology and install the new build.
