I have a pkg game of Castlevania Symphony of the Night and have a .srm file from when I played this using retroarch before. Is there a way to convert the save to be compatible with the pkg game?
SRM filename making by RetroArch cores in case of PSX, are memory card images. Normal, raw images, which 128KiB size should tells You. So just rename *.srm to *.VM1 (case sensitive), put in "dev_hdd0/savedata/vmc/" and rebuild database.
Memory card images aren't game saves. Saves are inside.

right, those are memcard images, not saves.
You can use MemcardRex on your computer to open those virtual memcards, then export the save(s) you want, and select "PSV" format since it's the native ps3 save format for ps1 and ps2 saves.
Once you have a .PSV file, you can import the ps1 save to any of the virtual memcards on the ps3 system using the XMB.
if using .PSV saves, then you need to import them using the XMB and a usb fat32 drive. Files should go in the /PS3/EXPORT/PSV/ folder so the ps3 xmb can detect them.
Also, if you import PSV saves thru XMB, there's no need to rebuild the database.
To show up saves in XMB. PS3 don't parsing majority type of data in real time from disk. Im case of saves on VM1/VM2, they are parsed and written to database from where informations are gathered to displaying in XMB. If You add vmc or replace one not by "XMB" itself, it will not know about it, so it will not shows any changes You've made. During rebuilding database, PS3 scanning all contents to fills databases.What exactly is the purpose of rebuilding the database? Is it a database of all game data?
For this specific card or for all at once (i.e importing PSV to "test_1.VM1" and PS3 performing update db for also "test_2.VM1")?
