Is it safe to use 4.87 HFW?

Hello, I had installed HAN more than a year ago on a 4.82 OFW on a PS3 SuperSlim. I have been reading through this forum that there is a new exploit: HEN; and a new firmware: HFW.

I perfectly rembember when you recommended not to update the firmware of the PS3. Now it looks like I will have to update it or make some sort of workaround to get my PS3 connect to internet; because somehow the browser is not working properly as it did before, and in looking for the root of the problems, it seems that Sony managed to leave me offline if I don't update the PS3.

All this led me to some skepticism about the updates following 4.82. On 4.83, Sony "patched" HAN. Now, you have made it work again with this HFW. Three updates followed the version 4.84, and Sony did not patch the exploit anymore, but why?

PS3 Developer Wiki has some information about the last update: 4.87.
This system software update improves system performance.
Why would Sony give performance improvements to the PS3 now? There are the PS4 and PS5 for which Sony has more to care about now. Sony hadn't released updates for the PS3 until the Ps3Xploit started to gain relevance.

Again, the wiki says that there are changes made to the PS1, PS2 and PSP emulators. Why would Sony update those emulators of the PS3? As far as I know, they're not widely used (I didn't know they existed until I started using HAN).

So, all of this leaves me with some suspicions about the recent updates. I would like to use HEN and make my PS3 work with Internet, and not regret later for updating the firmware.

Are you REALLY sure that updating to 4.87 OFW from 4.82 is safe if I want to put HEN on it and whatever CFW-like exploit that may come later?

Thanks.

they didn't really change anything that would have stopped han from working. they updated the web browser to fix the hole used to install ans enable han. HFW puts the old browser back so it can be used to install and enable han. i don't think they have anybody working on ps3 that has the skills to fix it. sometimes it even seems that sony just doesn't care...

Why would Sony give performance improvements to the PS3 now?
they always say "improves system performance". it used to say "improves system performance and stability". just copy and paste except one time they didn't cooy the last part so no more 'stability improvements'.

i don't know really but (if i understand it correctly) at least one of the ps2 emulators has built-in configs. one guess would be that they may be replacing some of thier own configs with some posted on this forum by our users. (maybe not but it is possible!)

yeah but just install HFW 4.87 (not OFW).

BTW you can stay on 4.82 and use the last official hen for 4.82 OR you can try HEN 3.0.0 for 4.82 but it is not officially supported. download 3.0.0 zip here.

Thanks for your prompt reply.

Well, yes, sometimes I think so too. Even though, I am not still sure about the emulators, it just doesn't make sense (unless Sony is trying to fix the emulator so we can play more old games with the exploit, but that would be even less likely).

By the way, how do you know if some version of HEN works properly with X version of the firmware (4.82 OFW, for example)? Also, do you know how can I connect to Internet?, because, as I said, the browser doesn't work properly, perhaps caused by some obscure system function that detects that I have an old firmware version and blocks me from trying to use it until I update the PS3.

Anyway, which one was the last official HEN for 4.82 OFW?, I thought that HEN was only available for 4.84 HFW onwards.

Thanks.

there are different zip files for each firmware if you download hen. if you install hen online, it detects firmware.

4.82 support was dropped starting with 3.0.0. any official online installers will not allow 4.82 installs anymore.

Anyway, which one was the last official HEN for 4.82 OFW?
i think it was 2.4.0. the zip file for 3.0.0 is coming from official site but there is support for 4.82 anymore. that just means none of the devs are helping with 3.0.0 on 4.82 questions.

i would recommend installing hfw 4.87 and installing hen from **ps3xploit.com >Domain no Longer owned by team** (ps3xploit.me =new) or using auto hen installer.

The emulators are compiled from source code... and then are encrypted... for every firmware version
In all the emulator files mentioned below, when the source code is compiled is added a timestamp... and then are encrypted
ps1_emu.elf
ps1_netemu.elf
ps1_newemu.elf
ps2_emu.elf
psp_emulator.elf
psp_translator.elf

The only way to know if there are code changes in between different versions of them is to decrypt and then compare them with the previous version
If you do it with the emulator files mentioned above you are going to realize the only difference is the timestamp. In the changelilsts that appears in psdevwiki is not made this comparison so are listed as different, but usually are the same code than previous version

Thanks for the answers.

@sandungas , that makes more sense. Thanks for your explanation.

When I said that the browser doesn't work properly, I meant that it can't access any website, not only the scripts of **ps3xploit.com >Domain no Longer owned by team** (ps3xploit.me =new), the only one it has access to is Google. Thanks for your remark, though. My problem is somewhat like this one: https://www.reddit.com/r/ps3homebrew/comments/fqunb5/page_cannot_be_displayed_only_on_my_ps3/

Well, thanks for all your help.

the browser is old and a lot of https sites will not work now, even on 4.87. also the ps3 doesnt have much memory.
