Just jailbroke a friends PS3. Now asking for update

Since there is an update, I had jailbroken my friends PS3 to Ferrox Cobra for 4.86. But now that I had to create a PSN ID for him and decided tried to log into PSN, it is demanding I update the PS3 to latest, 4.87 so I can activate the console.

Do I have to actually do this? Is there a way I can just keep 4.86? Or must I upgrade? And if I do, do I have to go through the whole process again in jailbreaking the console or do I just update Ferrox Cobra to 4.87 and away I go?

I apologize. I have read through the forum but not really seen my question directly.

Evilnat cfw is the only one on 4.87 yet. you can use it for now or spoof to get online.

No, just install the 4.87.2 Evilnat CFW PUP from USB. That is the update.

Once on CFW you should never go back to official firmware. If you do you will lose your jailbreak.

alright, thanks. Will try it now. My question is, there are multiple pup files but not sure which one to choose.

And when I put it on the USB, do I just install it by system update via storage media?

You want the first one. The others are for people who have BD drive or bluetooth/wifi issues.

Yes, just install it like a normal update via storage media.

Edit: On Reddit someone said it can be a problem with OFW.

I dont remember if my Ferrox Cobra is OFW or CFW. Will this be an issue?

Official firmware aka OFW is firmware made by Sony. If you have anything else then its not OFW.

Google how to update PS3 firmware via USB, its probably an issue with the folders named wrong, file named wrong, or USB drive not formatted correctly (must be FAT32 MBR), or usb drive not compatible.
 
you know what is so sad? I am a computer engineer. For some reason, working nights have caused enough brain damage to me I suppose.

Thank you so much for your help so far. I completely forgot to create the folder/subfolder.
 
Just wanted to update you. It worked. Was able to get on, get on PSN and be able to play the games too.

I really appreciate all your help. Really, I do.
