PS2 Killed my Disc Drive

So Not sure if it was or not but I have been using opl for awhile now but got a wild hair up my ass and decided to play a game i have on disc. I know the disc works as I played it before installing OPL and FMCB and it wouldn't read at all. I removed the FMCB memory card and my MX4ISO. I have a SCPH-39001 Fat. did my PS2 just think there was a disc in it and just spun up the drive and burn my laser out while playing a game off a USB drive/MX4ISO?
I am A total Noob at this So any help would greatly be appreciated

try a different game (both cd and dvd). try a dvd movie and audio cd also. there are 2 lasers (one for cd and one for dvd) so one may still work. ps2 consoles are old and a faulty laser or drive moter is probably the most commonly needed repair, but there are parts for sale online if needed.

Yeah I tried that and you might be right though might need a new drive :(( when playing some games through opl i Think i do hear the drive kick but i might just be hearing things but might just need to swap the drives when I get the chance and the money. But i really hat repairing Fat PS2's lol

It is not possible to kill laser by not using it. ;)

Probably dirty lens and/or old lubricant on rails. And/or data rot if this is DVD-/+R.

My apologizes on necroing a thread, but I have replaced sooooo many lasers on Fat PS2s as of late (27 in the past 2 months). The lasers do 'burn' out over time. There are a few options you have here:

1: Attempt cleaning the lens
2: Attempt adjusting the power control knobs (One for CD, other for DVD) under the laser (if you do not know what you are doing, you will kill the lasers)
3: Replace the laser with a KHS-400C (You will need to desolderer the anti-static bridge and calibrate the laser, you will also need to flash the EEPROM with the laser flash tool that is floating around here. Can link it to you if you need it).

Replacing the laser is a 20 min job (disassembly, setting, and reassembly). I always test before putting it all back together because sometimes it requires small adjustments. I also recommend that if you are in there, clean it out. Get some white lithium grease to re-grease the rails and gears after cleaning them with 91% alcohol. If you need help or pointers, send me a DM.

With that said, maybe I should make a video on the next one I fix/rebuild.
