I have a V3 PAL PS2 (the one with 10 screws on the bottom), and I've been noticing that the laser has been slow reading DVD games. Regardless of the amount of scratches, it always takes 3 attempts from cold boot with the disk already inserted to auto-load (I can hear the laser clicking, trying to read the disk). And ingame, for example in San Andreas, the textures take forever to load, leaving a lot of blank spaces, especially while flying.
Due to these symptoms, I was thinking on replacing the laser unit. The console has pre-installed a KHS-400B, and I've read that the improved KHS-400C is a drop in replacement. Is this true? Do I need to fiddle with lenschanger?
I'm also having doubts on which laser to buy. On eBay there's lots of choices, but most of them from China. Are these reliable? There's also a few users selling "new" Sony branded KHS-400C lasers. Which one would you recommend?
