PS2 [Looking For Testers] QHD MPEG 2 Video in SMS Media Player on PS2

Hello everyone! I am currently traveling for work, away from my PlayStation 2 and am unable to test this hypothesis. I have prepared a test video file and I was hoping some of you out there might be able to test it for me!

As in a previous experimentation thread where I determined that the PS2 could play 960x540 QHD Xvid video up to 30fps, I became curious about the possibility of MPEG 2 QHD video, but was unable to test due to time constraints.

I know that SMS can natively play back MPEG2 files, which holds the potential of delivering much better video quality at smaller file sizes than Xvid, but I had assumed the player was tapping into PS2's native DVD decoding hardware to accomplish the task. As 960x540 is outside the standard spec for MPEG 2 videos I wasn't sure that was possible.

I have prepared a test music video file to download and test. As I had mentioned before, I am currently traveling for work and am away from my PS2, so I'm hoping some of you would be willing to try this out for me. :D

UPDATE: 08/04/2024 - More test videos!

If possible, please test with the following perameters:

::Run the video from internal HDD (the video is relatively high rate and you will suffer buffering if attempting to load via USB)
::Set SMS for a 1280x720 output for the best-possible playback quality.

I have no idea of this file would work, but it would be absolutely WILD to see high-quality HD MPEG 2 running on PS2!

If you try this, report your results below! Thank you!!

If the PS2 can play DVD video ISOs, it will become a more lightweight and cooler media player than the original Xbox and PS3.

As much as I wish there was a homebrew similar to OPL that could play DVD video ISOs, that would be a perfect thing for the PS2, but unfortunately it has not been realized for so many years

Yes, there are not many consoles that can directly play DVD ISOs nowadays. The original Xbox requires you to extract the DVD ISO and then play it using XBMC. The PS3 is a good option, but it is not as reliable, quiet, or compact as the PS2. The PS4 can also do it after installing Linux, but it's quite troublesome.

I've been continuing to test just how far I can push SMS video playback with 960x540 videos in terms of bit rates. I've managed smooth playback (from hard drive) of 23.976 files at a staggering 7000 kbps with zero lag or hitches, both in Xvid and MPEG 2 files, and the results look absolutely stellar. For audio, however, I've have to reduce to 44.1 khz to avoid sync issues.
