PS3 Making BC PS3 Region Free on OFW

Hi,

I remember seeing an old post on this forum talking about the viability of having a PAL or NTSC(-J) region free drive. Back then (5 years or so ago) it was not possible on OFW. I was wondering if any progress has been made for this? Is there a possibility , for example via the syscon ?

Use case is for us in europe /other parts of the world that didn't get a full BC model and would rather stay on OFW. & play ps2/ps1 PAL games and european blu-rays.

that's probably done from one of the ps2 library files. I think they know which one, but I don't remember if it's encrypted. if it's encrypted, you wouldn't be able to. there may be other patches that need to be done as well, @LuanTeles may know as @Evilnat isn't on here very often anymore. afaik, bluray is region free except for like two or three games, but I think movies are fine. I agree with what you're thinking though, region blocking is stupid. I think the purpose was to force people to buy content at a higher price relative to their own country.

btw, I think it's called swap magic disc 3.8 may be able to bypass the region lock. I just don't know if it was ever patched. that's what I originally bought, long before cobra existed.

Thank you for the info. Hmm that's interesting. I will look into it.

wait for someone to confirm or deny if it's been patched. I'd hate to see you waste your money, but it does, or at least did, work on ofw. I'm a legit user too, but I'm too afraid of doing anything that could get me banned. I've spent thousands of dollars on psn, so I don't want to lose it all.

Hi , yes . I am in the same boat.
Used to go online on CFW a year or 5/6 ago to play demon souls with a buddy .
Used psnpatch and whatnot still got my account banned (luckely not my main account).
I don't want to worry about any of that.

Looks like it might be possible but having to run your games from an usb. :ambivalence:
I don't have great experience running games from usb (on ps2). Perhaps the ps3 is better at this , i don't know.
Might not be worth it that way.

just have 2 internal hard drives, 1 for OFW and another for CFW and swap as necessary. it's better if you have an hdd docking station with the cables connecting to the ps3 hdd connectors, but manually swapping works

the PS2 emulators haven't been updated since forever, if it's a full BC console and the disc works on a real ps2 it will work on ps3. also ps3 usb speed doesn't drop to the old standard which ps2 uses and what causes cutscenes skipping and slow loading times. go nuts.

I not only care about games, but I also care about trophies and saves, since I'm a psn+ user, and cloud saving is important to me. I know you can use db, and it's unlikely to get you banned, but I'm taking no chances here.
