MX4SIO memory card frustration

Ok, now where finally getting somewhere!! I put an ISO in a "dvd" folder on a USB stick and it WORKED!!!
OPL did the spinning circle thing during start up and it recognised it!!
I reformatted the SD using the program that R1vver suggested and checked the partition style (which is MBR) tried it out again but still nothing, nothing detected, so it looks like the problem possibly lies in the MX4SIO (even though the green light and activity light flashes) or it's something to do with the SD card compatibility
I'm using a Kingston 64Gb Canvas Select Plus mini SD inside an adapter which i thought was on the compatible list but i could be wrong
Have you tried running sdcard_debugger on your equipment?
https://www.psx-place.com/threads/testers-needed-mx4sio-wip-sd-compatibility-thread.39479/
Perhaps these will determine whether it is the card or the adapter?

Ok r1vver I ran the Debugger and it created the sdcard log text file which i've attached to this message. I read it and have no idea what it all means, but i see a lot of "OK" in the tests and it actually got a log file back, so it's obviously reading the SD card?

As far as I understand all this - the fact that the log turned out at all says that there is nothing wrong with the MX4SIO device itself.
The system "sees" the card through the device, writes and reads.
As for the log itself - you should have a more experienced person look at it, but in my opinion a lot of words "OKAY!" says that with the compatibility of the card is also all right. In any case, the log of cards that are not compatible - look very different.

@r1vver Any clue how those docs are named? I would like to search them.

BTW: I can download debugger but cannot "zero.bin". What is this file? Just a dummy with zeroes inside? How large?

Card init seems okay... The mx4sio driver version used in the debugger is the same as in OPL BDM 4.7.1.
Did you try the OPL BDM 4.7.1 build? <https://www.dropbox.com/s/sm1arxht45g15vo/OPL_BDM_4.7.1.ELF?dl=0>

It's linked below the sdcard debuggers in the WIP thread. https://www.dropbox.com/s/kaf0r6dc40ss021/zero.bin?dl=0. Though you could make/use any 16MB file

The titles are almost the same as the public ones, only the word "simplified" is missing. Over the years, new versions have appeared. The ones I came across were quite old, years 2009-2010.
For example SD Specifications - Part 1 - Physical Layer Specification, Part 2 - File System Specification, Part 3 - Security Specification, etc.

@qnox32 just tried the BDM4.7.1 build but still nothing - tried pulling it out and in again. I've guess ive narrowed it down to the card as the possible problem.
The ones i've tired without success are:
Philips 64gb SDXC 1 class 10
Samsung 64gb SDXC 1 class 10
Kingston (Mini with adapter) 64gb Canvas Select Plus

I've got a SanDisk 8Gb SDHC that i found lying around but i havent tired that as SanDisk got a bad wrap on the compatibility list

Could you try this build as well if you haven't already? CC V2: https://www.dropbox.com/s/ekhm82nui3ep53h/OPL_BDM_CC_TEST_V2.ELF?dl=0

The sdcard debugger you ran only logs card initialization. Prior to CC V2, reads are terminated in a way that deviates from spec and this could be causing an issue. The CC V2 build corrects that and a couple other things.

I've been using Physical Layer Specifications Ver 3.01 from Feb 2010 for timing reference. SDHC came out in 2006 and SDXC in 2009, so if you can find non-simplified documents from 2010 they might have what you're looking for.

Just tried this build, still nothing, but when i plug in a USB it detects it.

Just out of curiosity, i've written the DVD folder on the SD card in caps - is that going to cause an issue? should it be in lower case? just a thought in desperation :apologetic:

No, FAT file systems are not case sensitive. Are you getting any activity on the adapter LED or rather is the activity the same across different builds?

Yes, same across different builds, Green LED on constant, slight flickering of the blue light on bootup, but nothing when OPL is run. I've even tied pulling both cards out after OPL has started and putting the MX4SIO in slot 1 - nothing

Do all of these cards have a section of unallocated space at the beginning? If so could you try completely reformatting one using Window's disk manager?

I'll have another go at that, I've been using the fast format function in Windows10 (right click, format, quick format)

@qnox32 i just checked it and it has 16mb unallocated space at the beginning

Argh :disturbed: i thought someone said that blank allocation was supposed to be there back in this thread. I'll see what i can do
