PS2 [MX4SIO/SIO2SD] SD Card Adapter and SD-driver for the PS2 SIO2 interface

The version before/without the pull-ups supports small as well as big SD-slots.

It's meant to be used with "inversed" slots with that push-click-mechanic, but works with many slots! They can even be ripped from old hardware sometimes (i.e. reusing trash)!

Did you add the LEDs? ;)

Good morning, well... :D

The BOM, inversed SD and MicroSD slots caught me out at first. I didn't pay close enough attention and ordered a normal (non-reversed) MicroSD slot. After realising my mistake i ordered a reversed (inversed) MicroSD one, which arrived the other day.

The ones (CN20, CN30) from the BOM list (SD:- Hirose DM1B-DSF-PEJ) and (MicroSD:- Hirose DM3BT-DSF-PEJS) are completely out of stock (at the moment) with all the main distributors:- Mouser, Farnell, Digi-Key, etc. None have any MicroSD, or SD "inversed" slots in stock, that i could find.

The same goes for the LEDs, although the LEDs, etc are in stock, the MOSFETs (BSS84) and (2N7002ET1G) from the BOM are not in stock @ Mouser, Farnell, Digi-Key, etc. So for now i just have the 47 Ohm resistor and the Hirose "inversed" MicroSD slot (DM3BT-DSF-PEJS).

Once the MOSFETs, (T10, T20) are back in stock again, i aim to upgrade it with the LEDs yep. Since you guys wrote the "manual" PDF the worldwide chip / component shortage has only gotten worse. Many components that were in abundance everywhere in the past are now currently impossible to source, or being sold on eBay for 10x the original prices.

Recently i was trying to build a PC-Engine Flash Hucard, using the provided BOM and files from a PC-Engine enthusiast's website. But it was written years ago, and most of the components are impossible to source now. I can't even get a geniune FTDI FT232RL, let alone the more complex ICs like FPGAs (Xilinx, Lattice, etc) needed for other projects like GCVideo Lite 09, and GCVideo_Shuriken :upset:

My fault maybe for sitting on these projects for too long, "build it while you can" is the new motto! :eagerness:

To tell all of you the truth, this SD card adapter doesn't work very well in my configuration. I'm not going to go with individual titles this time because it doesn't make sense. There is just 1 specific pattern I noticed:

MX4SIO is faster than USB but runs with more bugs than USB while USB is slower than MX4SIO but games running through USB have less bugs than MX4SIO. This is the best way to conclude it

The game compatibility on MX4SIO is really 50/50 where the other 50 have bugs or don't work at all. This solution might be worth it if you REALLY want to go through many PS2 titles and you are a fan of it (and waste a lot of your time in the process)

My configuration is, I repeat:
PS2 slim SCPH-70004 (PAL)
FreeMCBoot + OPL BDM3 1629

I also corrected my MX4SIO using wires with much higher ratings for power but, of course, this didn't improve things at all

But here's the main point of my disappointment- it's OPL. When I checked the "compatibility list", Star Wars Racer Revenge was marked as working through USB with some usual FMV skipping issues. When I tried to load it through USB using the latest version of OPL to this day, it didn't boot up at all... I tried both game versions, USA and Europe, checked for both configurations with PADEMU on or off and also, according to the "compatibility" list, I checked modes 2 or 3. If you do the math, I checked all 16 different combinations and all I got is black screen. It didn't even try to do anything. I wasted around 2 hours of my life to achieve absolutely nothing... To evaluate things even further, yes the games were not fragmented on USB and I used PS2 controller

Here is another HUGE issue with OPL- it's file fragmenting. This is what will make people frustrated the most. Whenever I tried to load a game through any method, sometimes a game didn't boot up because it was fragmented and OPL didn't support it. Seriously though?? I mean come on... we live in 2022, not 2005. This is every day practice to delete and write new files on flash devices and they can't even be fragmented easily. If you talk about PS2 then it is severely limited by 32GB FAT32 system and games being 4GB or more.

In the end result- OPL is overall a complete trash and at this state, it isn't even close to being considered v1.0. The "compatibility" list isn't even relevant anymore if things like these mentioned above happen every day. The real solution should be fool proof and the best idea is to implement a PS2 ODE but, as far as I can tell, such a thing doesn't exist

The software is WIP.

BDM is only part of OPL since a few months and Firewire and MX4SIO are labeled "experimental" in OPL for a reason! ;)

I noticed that game-compatibility varies depending on the SD and possibly even how it is formatted and it also seems to be affected by the console-version itself!

Final Fantasy doesn't work for me on the DECKARD with BDM3 on a Samsung Evo 256GB, but DOES work on the Toshiba Exceria.

ICO needs Mode 6 on the DECKARD, but not on the FAT and stuff like that!

With the "PADEMU-Trick" I can get way more games working than without it and I DO have a DS2 connected to Slot1 at all times!

"16 different combinations"?? It are 6 modes = 64 combos!

Regarding an ODE... Develop one and let's see how successful it becomes.

Regarding FAT32... We can NOW easier add filesystems... Go ahead! The source is open! There is even an EXT2(/3?/4?) build, but it is old.

...and regarding fragmentation: We have KBs for our drivers... Blame the IOP having 2MB RAM and the games actually using it. If we would run the filesystem-driver in-game, this would kill compatibility with a lot of games!

Regarding "OPL is overall a complete trash": Why don't you write your own Loader then, or contribute to OPL to make it better?
I wonder how good these would be then.

You do realize that we do this in our free time as a hobby and share the stuff for free? ALL of it...!

You have a SCPH-70004, so you don't have a Deckard.

Shouldn't you be using OPL Beta BDM(1), rather than BDM3 ?

SCPH-70xxx = OPNPS2LD-v1.1.0-Beta-1627-23ba651-bdm

SCPH-70xxx = OPNPS2LD-v1.1.0-Beta-1629-e20f2ee-bdm3

This! :love heart:

@VegaVegas ...c'mon bro, it's true. We are all friends here, so no need to get unhappy about things, life is too short and most games are too crappy for our precious time anyway lol, that's why we like to tune / tweek / test / break / build. :very drunk:

Software related issues can only improve over time.

Edit: Also Vega, i have spent last few days testing a list of about 100+ games, and it's not true what you say, the compatibillity percentage is actually high around 85%, at least from my tests via 77003 and BDM3. I am currently submitting the results to the master MX4SIO compatibility spread-sheet. How many games have you tested in total?

Oh wait, was I using the wrong version of OPL for SD cards?? So where is the correct one? I can't even find it... If this is my bad and if things improve then maybe I will correct some of my opinions

(I think I found it, it's in page 15)

But hey, basically what you are all saying PS2 is still too weak to do anything like this so you kind of confirm OPL is kinda crappy and not really dedicated to an ordinary user. This is what I think too. Criticism is to make things better. I try to be cool after all. The real solution I would support, or even implement or at least support implementing is PS2 ODE. PS1 already has xstation and I have it and it's the best and most compatible thing ever. Improving OPL is always going 2 steps forward and 1 step back. PS2 ODE can potentially be 10000% progress forward

Yes, your SCPH-70004 needs BDM(1) OPNPS2LD-v1.1.0-Beta-1627-23ba651-bdm

You have IOP, so BDM(1) should give you much better compatibilty. It can indeed be found at the bottom of Page-15, as you said.

I'm bumping this thread and I can say testing it with OPL 1627 BDM didn't improve anything. This means my PS2 is probably unfortunate with OPL if everyone else gets better results. I can make a spreadsheet with titles I tested so far but only if anyone else confirms this info will be useful

Friends here are working on this MX4SIO BDM / BDM3 testing game compatibility spread sheet:-

EDIT: See the link to spread-sheet at the top of this page-30

See the spread-sheet, there's already many game tests done with a SCPH-70004 there, using OPL 1627 BDM by Anakin94, see if the green games work for your SCPH-70004 too. I believe Anakin94's PS2 is PAL like yours. If your SCPH-70004 can't load / play any of the green ones, then there might be something more to your PS2 compatiblity issues.

Ah crap here we go with troubles again... or at least to solving some of them. Looks like some of my files WERE fragmented on my SD card and this caused troubles with some of the games. This list actually has Star Wars Racer Revenge listed as working and I happen to have this file as well. When I formatted the SD card yet again and wrote the file again, it started to work with 1627 BDM (thank you). Looks like I'm supposed to go through all problematic titles yet again. I would also test more titles but first I need to buy them on piratebay

Here's a little and huge suggestion- can anyone edit those OPL BDM revisions so they check whether a game is fragmented beforehand so the user will know right away?? This will save A LOT of headache to many people. At least they would know there is some sort of error

Hey that's great you found the problem, yep try working through your games that didn't work before, and check to see if those particular games are either red, yellow, or green on the MX4SIO spread-sheet, (if they are there yet).

Also, the spread-sheet link only went up yesterday, so more and more games / tests should get submitted there soon.

During testing things once again I can tell you guys I found another pattern of behavior which was the majority of problems- games made by Digital Eclypse (or whatever part of the game is made by them) don't work at all on MX4SIO. Here's more detailed explanation:

All test made on OPL 1627 BDM:
Mortal Kombat 5: Deadly Alliance- works but cutscenes still tear a little as mentioned earlier (this game doesn't have any extras but I think it was worth mentioning)
Mortal Kombat: Deception- this one works flawlessly surprisingly (also doesn't have any extras)
Mortal Kombat: Deception: Premium Pack Bonus Disc- it boots up but when you try to load MK1, it loads infinitely
Mortal Kombat: Armageddon Premium Edition- MKA works flawlessly with perfect cutscenes BUT when you go to extras and play UMK3, it loads infinitely
Midway Arcade Treasures 2- doesn't boot up no matter how hard I try

All versions are NTSC-US. All of these games actually play fine on USB flash drive but with tearing cutscenes of course. I use OPNPS2LD-v1.2.0-Beta-DB_all-2202-642fe4e-2021-11-14 for USB games. Because of this I assume all Midway Arcade Treasure games will not boot up on MX4SIO. I also assume MK2 in MK: Shaolin Monks USA also will not boot up. That's of course if anyone still wants to improve OPL and didn't get offended

Hey Friends, good morning, just finished testing my game collection. I have submitted the results (with extra details) to the master MX4SIO compatibility spread-sheet. Hopefully @Versatile can update that soon. I was excited with the results and because it took me all week to test these games, i wanted to share the results with you now. Using BDM3, on SCPH_77003, Dual Shock2 in Port 1.

180 games tested, 87% Compatible! :D

For the remaining 13% of games that mainly had BSOD (not listed above), when using different Modes it didn't help, so i want to test those games more, trying VMC on different Slots to see if there is any difference. Ciao for now guys.

Many thanks, I was hoping a mod would do that. :eagerness: ...after i posted the list, i was like: "opps! that's far too big"
Moderation Team Note:

FYI

Editing member posts is something the moderation team tends to avoid as much as possible for a number of reasons, some obvious & others less so but just as relevant nonetheless.

Moderators intervene in member's posts when there is a breach of rules, a report issued by a member or to rearrange threads/posts posted in the wrong place, that kind of things.
From time to time, we may intervene to change a thread title or amend the OP's contents when we see wrong or misleading information but we will extremely rarely (if ever) edit a post just for the sake of improving its text or layout.
If, on top of regular moderation duties, we also had to routinely edit member's posts for layout purposes or text improvements, we would definitely need additional staff volunteers, considering that we cannot even fill the spots we have as it is..

Members acquire full editing permissions of their posts quite quickly after signing up, in your case you must have gained those permissions back in April 2020 so why would you "hope for" a moderator to spot the problem & take care of your post layout for you when it would have taken you about 30 seconds to do it yourself?

I'm sorry, i didn't mean it like that, i have since edited that post. I just wasn't sure if the list would be considered too long to post without a "Spoiler", and i was in two minds, so when TnA did put the list behind a "Spoiler" it resolved my indecisiveness.

You don't have to apologise about anything, nothing happened, I merely used your situation to clarify things for everyone from a moderation point of view, it wasn't personal.
