PS2 My PS2 FAT HDD Activity LED Mod

I don't like the location Sony decided to put the PS2 HDD activity LED so I decided to place it inside the "O" on the Sony badge near the power and eject buttons.

See my blog here for the build log and a tutorial if anyone else wants to replicate my mod.

I used a flat top LED since it looks much better as the top of it is level with the raised letters of the Sony badge text.

NOTE: LED will not light up with 3rd party HDD adapters like the GameStar version.

Kind a strangle place for a LED. Personally I prefer orange blinking from the grid and even not orange but green, blue or red. ^^

It's looking good, but I would also prefer something like a brighter LED possibly with another color and in place of the original one.

Still nice! Keep us updated! :)

It seems to me an excellent job, I have tried to make this mod but I don't know exactly where the LED is located on the PS2 board, the model of my PS2 is SCPH-30001 GH-010 board
Please could you help me know where the LED is located or send me a picture of your MOD on the PS2 board?
Greetings! :encouragement:

Thank you very much for your help, but I have not been able to make the LED work, I have also tried to solder the points directly to the connector following the indications in your blog, but it has not worked either, the led that is soldered to the board as the external led does not they show signs of life, maybe it is because I am using a clone hdd adapter (GameStar) or maybe I am doing something wrong but I have given up, some advice would be very helpful.
Greetings!

There is your problem right there as I also noticed my GameStar adapter didn't light up the internal LED aswell.

Btw, you could flatten the tip of an standard LED just by placing a file over a flat surface (a table) and moving the tip of the LED on top of it (and later polish it by continue rubbing it on top of sandpaper... cloth... cotton... etc...)
If you take a look at one of those LEDs from a side you are going to see A LOT of the material of the tip is just solid plastic. The amount of plastic you can remove depends of where are located the metal "tips" inside the plastic

Yes, GameStar SATA NAs don't light up the HDD led (I'm not sure about IDE GameStar NAs. I seems to remember they light up the led. Not sure though it's been many years since last time I used a IDE GS NA).
