PS4 My ps4 is stuck on firmware 8.5 is that a blessing or a curse?

So I got a PS4 slim from a friend, how great is that, free ps4.
Small problem; Blu-ray-drive is not working, and when he tried to update the machine (and I also tried, now realizing; YIKES, I attempted to go to firmware 12.52) error code SU-42118-6 pops up. Which basically means, the Blu-ray-drive is broken, which is possibly not a cheap fix, so a second hand ps4 could be cheaper. I could try to fix it...BUT.... I could also try to (jail) break it.
There's an overwhelming amount of information online, and I would like do something like a ps4xploit90 using a ESP32. Sounds like a fun project to me. But all of these exploits seems to mention firmware 9.0 and I am stuck on 8.5.
Does ps4xploit900 work on firmware 8.5 ?
Is there another PS4 server exploit that works for 8.5 ?
Is there a way to update from older firmware to 9.0 without running into the SU-42118-6 error?
:watermelon::banana:

unfortunately, no, according to this: https://lightningmods.github.io/guide/nobd-guide.html

I found the link on lightning mods' site pkg-zone, looking up nobd. there's no exploits for 8.xx to use nobd. I think 8.xx is exploitable, but no one has bothered with it, because it's kinda a dead zone for the moment, but it would work for this.
thanks for the reply, I hadn't read about no blu-ray drive patched updates, which is nice to know that you can update without a blu-ray drive. But, that's just my luck, all the firmware versions from 4 till 9 are exploitable, except for 8 :topsy turvy:
LOL
Does anyone have an alternative method I could try?

AFAIR there was project called PSFree for covering up 8.00 and 8.03. I have 8.03 also with broken ODD but never bother to exploit it yet.

Thanks for the help :)
I gave it to a friend for spare parts and I bought a ps4 pro.
I could have probably fixed the blu-ray drive, but since it was already broken and repaired a few years back, I didn't think it'd be worth it.
