PS3 New COBRA Feature [stage2.bin] by deank: Play Games/Media from Burned Optical Media

UPDATE: FERROX COBRA (w/ 7.50 Cobra is also supported)
Developer @deank has followed up the very much improved NTFS External HDD Support in webMAN, which another great release, this time around a new feature for the Cobra Payload Currently this release of (stage2.bin) only supports Habib's 4.81 STARBUCKS (v1.02 ) w/ COBRA 7.50 CFW & 4.81 FERROX (v1.02) COBRA 7.50 but we should see other CFW such as REBUG supporting this new changes that now give you the ability to play your Games / Media from Burned Optical Media, checkout all the media types deanks has tested and confirmed working.

Want a sneak peak of a Test feature in webMAN? If so checkout deank utilizing a recent source code release (from mysis) that helps webMAN check that unrelated development (from this article) here

  • I tested it thoroughly to make sure nothing is broken and nothing was :)

    Original discs:

    • PS3 Game Disc - OK
    • PS2 Game Disc - OK
    • PS1 Game Disc - OK
    • Blu-ray Disc - OK
    • DVD Video - OK

    Burned discs:
    • PS3 Game (DVD-R SL/DL)
    • PS2 Game (DVD-R)
    • PS2 Game (CD-R)
    • PS1 Game (CD-R)
    • AVCHD Disc (DVD-R SL/DL)
    • DVD-Video (DVD-R)
    • Data Disc (DVD-R)
    • Data Disc (CD-R)

@Joonie @habib This is a firmware feature and can't be added to applications, so it will be nice if it is included in the next Cobra revision.

The only changes are in storage_ext.c (which is firmware independent) in functions related to disc authentication/identification.

    PS3 games can be burned to regular CD-R, DVD-R SL/DL, BD-R SL/DL, BD-RE :)

There is no need for game manager (multiMAN/IRIS/etc) or for webMAN/MOD when launching PS3 games from burned discs. The only requirement is that the disc is properly created (unencrypted, from proper ISO or from game folder using genps3iso) - the only check is that at sector 16 (0x10) offset 0x28 there must be a "PS3VOLUME" string.

If anyone wants to test it only on @habib's cex cfw 4.81 v1.02 cobra 7.5 (replace stage2.bin in /dev_blind/sys): http://deanbg.com/cobra_stage2_cex_cfw_habib_481_v102_cobra750.zip

BD-R/RE discs are now much cheaper than 7 years ago, so this feature could be really useful for people who want to backup their collection on optical media and play it at any time without fiddling with usb drives, network streams or ftp. :) Also it achieves 100% compatibility of all games released to date.

I confirm correct working even on Ferrox cobra 7.5

    stage2.bin (only ferrox cobra 7.5 1.02)
    update code in my git

    thanks @deank.

First of all, huge thank you to all developers working in PS3 comunity. Without them, and their work none of this would be possible.
I'm new in modding, and i just recently jailbroke my PS3 bought in 2010.
This particular feature is HUGE for me just because of PS2 emulation. Netemu works, but compatibility is still not nearly big enough to match PS1 ( PSX ).
I believe that when this last step is completed ( cobra ps2_netemu LV2 ), we will have a perfect CFW which does everything, and you will have 3 playstations in one :)
Just think about it ... whatever you feed into your PS3, it'll just play / work ... i'm giggling right now on the verry thought of it. That will be the day ...
Actually the best way for ps2emu on Non-BC would probably be to ditch netemu & use 3.55 softemu instead.
However for the moment nobody could make it work with 4.xx.... It might still be done in the future though...

I believe in comunity and people in it. It will be done eventually ... just look what has been done so far.
As agent Smith said to Neo, " It is inevitable " :)

Where is this stage2.bin in /dev_blind/sys on the hard drive or is it the cfw? I couldn't find /dev_blind/sys. I'm a newb to all this. Hopefully it will be in the next firmware update. But it looks a new cfw will not be out. Looks like sony didn't come out with new firmware after 4.81.

dev_blind is dev_flash with enabled write permissions. You can enable it using webman/sman/multiman, and many others.

But messing with flash when you don't fully understand it is bad idea, I strongly advice you to use this firmware: http://www.cybermodding.it/showthread.php?3699-Release-Custom-Firmware-FERROX-4-81-v1-03-COBRA-7-52
Is for now only firmware with integrated Cobra 7.52, so you need to just install it.

You need to register for download, or wait until someone post PUP here.

PS. @Alexander @LizZo maybe one of you guys can post download link here? Not everyone can register easily on Italian site. Thanks in advance! :)

Thanks. Hopefully someone will upload it here. Now I need to downgrade my ps3 to cfw 3.55 since I'm already on 4.8.1.

You cannot upload the pup directly to this forum due to the hosted file size limit policy. If you wanna help, you can put it on a File Hosting service like Mediafire, Sendspace, Mega, Rghost etc... If it's too much asking then no worries, someone will mirror the file for us in the near future...
The pup will be in English by default as always & of course the OS supporting most other mainstream languages.

Why does the game stutter is it the disc?
If you wish an answer to your question, you may consider giving us a few more details...
Game stutters? It must have been the same with your previous CFW?
What kind of game(s)? PS3? Iso/JB/burned or original disc?
All game titles stutter?
How do you run the game(s)? Internally/externally/disc/ps3netsrv?
Stuttering usually takes places because of hdd fragmentation (or bandwidth issues when using ps3netsrv).

I suspect that because it is in this thread that he is talking about games stuttering from burned disc, If thats the case, I suppose there are a few possible causes of this, dodgy laser, low quality media, scratches or dirt on the disc. burned too fast maybe..

I should have said DVD+R media. Must be low quality media like DeVil303 said. Laser works fine with PS3 Game Discs.

Your problem is probably related to bad quality media, but keep in mind that DVD is using different laser than Original games (BD).

In terms of overall quality & reliability, burned discs (duplicated) are never as good as retail discs (replicated), they use dyes to record the binary data whereas a retail disc uses real physical "pits". On top, the output power of a writing laser always reduces with time & the lower the output power is, the lower the burned disc quality gets.
It's better to avoid low quality media & stick to reliable recording speeds.

If you want to compare game fluidity between burned & retail discs, you must use the same disc type. The PS3 BD drive uses 2 lasers in one lens, a red laser (640nm) for CD/DVD & a blue laser (405nm) for the BD. It is possible that your red laser does not work very well & has difficulties reading your burned DVD...
Make sure you try a game on pressed retail CD or DVD to be certain that the issue does not come from your laser.
If a game on retail DVD also stutters, you may need to look at the lens but if only the burned disc version of the game stutters, the issue probably comes from the low quality of the media.

Note also that if you ever intend to burn dual layer discs, remember that using an iso image made with either genps3iso or makeps3iso should be avoided, only S#ny's tool (which use is illegal without an expensive license) does a good job, placing the right files at the right places..
With non dual layer discs, there is no such issue.

Why should gen3psio and make3iso be avoided? Is it because the files won't be in the right places on the Disc? Will this harm the laser?

Yes, it's because the S#ny tool maps the files correctly for DL disc burning whereas genps3iso & makeps3iso ignore this mapping, probably because it's useless with ISO.

No I don't think there is any risk of damaging the laser testing this. The data will never be placed in places outside the zone reserved for data but the reading transitions between the 2 layers require some files to be placed strategically..
Those burned DL discs made from genps3iso/makeps3iso will usually be unplayable anyway so...

Generally speaking, you should also note that if you use genps3iso, you should stick to the 2.0 version only.
