PS3 New life for old PS3 3.01

Greetings folks. A couple of years ago I acquired a ps3 fat with a broken blue ray. It boots and runs so I checked the firmware; it is 3.01. At that time (2022) the Psx Place forums said something about needing 3.55 to install custom firmware and that CFW could then be installed direct from XMB without issue.
The current guides are applying a patch from the ps3toolset.com before installing CFW.
I wish to install the latest 4.91.2 EVILNAT (Cobra 8.5) and I see in the release notes that it says "Can be installed over 3.55 OFW"
So... Is it correct that I need to install OFW 3.55 from the XMB and then I can install 4.91.2 EVILNAT (Cobra 8.5) from my usb without needing to use ps3toolset.com?

If you are on FW 3.55 or below, then yes, you can install any CFW.

But ther's been reports that you may need to go to some other, intermediate FW version before installing Evilnat's latest version.

First, install OFW 3.55, then install Evilnat's CFW 4.91.2.

If you get some kind of error, try installing Rebug's 4.84 first, and the Evilnat's 4.91.2.

noBD version is only required if your BD drive is missing or broken (mainly the daughter board, not the mechanical thing).

noBT version is only required if your BT/WiFi module is damaged or broken.

If your console is fully working, just go with the normal REBUG REX 4.84.
