PS3 New to modding

Hello people,

Nice to meet you. Recently I have gotten my hands on two ps3s. One is phat modell CECHG04 and the other is slim modell CECH-2004A. Now my qurstion is which one is the best for CFW? I wanna use one with only the original firmware and the other to only use CFW. I have heard the slim 2004A has heat issues and can die in long run? Maybe this is the best to install CFW since I aint gonna lose much?

Btw I dont know the firmware on the system. But does it matter which firmware they are on to install CFW?
The phat one didnt came with a controller so I cant controll it to see the firmware version, I have to wait for the slim to arrive so I can connect the controller of that one to phat one with usb.

Hello, I would use the slim for CFW by being able to increase fan speed to increase cooling also being a nor memory console. E3 flasher is also much easier to use. That is if you want to flash your memory for some reason. The phat console has nand memory with to memory chips. This requires a different hardware flasher for flashing. Also pretty sure memory and CPU and RSX are better I'm thinking. Both consoles have heat problems but proper thermal paste and cooling are essential and both consoles can run pretty long when these care measures are taken CFW achieves the best cooling options.:sfun oldguy:

Hey JonathanAbba. I'm brand new to modding the PS3 as well. I have modded PCs by converting them from Windows to Linux and such but never a gaming console. The PS3 2001A that I have is something that was given to me with a bad Blu-Ray drive. I have been trying to fix it and think I have it but still having issues.

One thing about modding with the CFW is that most of the mods seem to assume a fully functioning system prior to the mod. My situation is slightly different and I hope that someone on this thread might respond with an answer. I did a system reset to see if I could get the drive to work. Now it wants to update the reset system and it keeps failing with an error that indicates an issue with the Blu-Ray drive. So instead of trying to finish the update, I wanted to try and go straight to installing CFW instead. Is this possible? I follow the instructions of creating the USB and the PS3 starts up and ask to install the controller. Then it supposedly starts reading from the USB stick. Then it errors out saying that the file is corrupt. So I'm wondering what I can do, if anything, to load CFW.

Thanks for answering. Btw whats the manjor difference between Hen and CFW? My firend ttold me he has a ps3 slim 3004 model and installed Hen and it does same as CFW. He told me Webman can be installed on Hen to control fan curve without the need for CFW.

Well one difference is any game pkg or iso must be decrypted then re encrypted with consoles id on a slim or super slim consoles. when hen is the only way to jailbreak. Consoles the can have full CFW BC compatible. This procedure is not needed to back up your own games. a PS3 that is not BC and cannot play PS2 iso you must decrypt and re encrypte the iso.
And yes fan curve is adjustable on all PS3 's with Hen or CFW.
Game backup's are much easier on full CFW.:D

Okay I think im gonna install cfw on 2004A modell. thanks for helping me. As for the phat modell Im not gonna do anything since I dont have much hope for it to last long since I learned today that RSX is 90 nm and it can die easily. Apperantly I have to delid that one, but I have no experince on this. On the other hand it smell new. So maybe the thermal paste is still new too?

If the warranty sticker is removed maybe it has new paste. For as old as it is if the warranty sticker is still intact it would probably need new thermal paste as it tends to dry out. But all an all both consoles should last a pretty long time with proper maintenance.
