New to softmods, looking for answers and tips

Hi Everyone, just signed up after soft modding my ps3. I use to do this way back, i still have my modded psx and my soft modded Wii but I wanted to give this a shot. Now I have a few questions and if anyone can provide tips, like what homebrews to use or how to avoid bricking that would be great!

So right now i'm on a phat ps3 backwards compatible model (the 60GB version)

4.82 CFW
Cobra Ferrox
multiman cobra (mmCM)
PSN patch 2017.02/B

I already copied a handful of my games to it but I'm curious at the potential of this system now and what all i can do.

First, here's what i'm looking for:

Is there a homebrew or something i can run to automatically download game information and cover art for the backups that don't automatically do it in mmcm?

Is there a way i can have the games populate in the regular XMB menu just like? something similar to PSN games?

Second:

Is mmCM a good options? i've read a lot about irisman but not sure about swtiching. I really just want to backup my entire psx / ps2 / ps3 library so something as simple and clean as possible.

in regards to backing up games, is it best to make an ISO or load it directly to the HDD? I've been making ISO's with the mindset that if i need to make secondary backups like on an Ext. HDD it'll be easier to move the iso.

Are there any other homebrews that might be good to have?

Thanks guys.

Welcome to the club! I have a 20GB model that I exploited a few years back.

I would install MultiMan just for the cover downloads (there are other apps that do this too) but I wouldn't use it for launching games.

I like using webMAN-MOD because it has an XMB folder that will show you your games. Highly recommend it.

MultiMAN is great for ripping games. I use that to backup ALL of my games. ISO's are preferred for PS3/PS2 games. BIN+CUE is preferred for PSX games.

You can also download and install this pkg, it had thousands of covers included and will install them into the right place for all managers to see them. This will cover 99% of games except for a few very new ones.

ISOs are much better than folder rips for PS3 games, easier to manage, and can be ran off external NTFS drives.

Greatly appreciate the recommendation, i installed it but now my ps3 cooling fan just ramps up to 100%

Thanks! I was having problems with my ps2 games, like Harvest moon showed up as a string of numbers

That is normal as really a standard PS3 is always running hot and quiet, that is why you hear of so many YLOD (yellow light of death), so when you installed webMAN mod it has built in dynamic fan control which activated, this will have detected the high temp and ramped up the fan speed, it should slow down again once the PS3 cools enough. If you wish you can visit the webMAN settings webpage and set the fan control to be less aggressive/quieter, or even set it back to OFW syscon control. Syscon not recommended though really.

One more question if I may, is there any way to backup my legit PSN purchased titles for that eventual day when PSN shuts off? A link to the appropriate thread would be marvelous.

Thanks in advance.

I hate to necro my own post but I didn't feel like creating another. I have a few more questions about playing backups from the HDD.

Most games are fine but I'm starting to wonder if playing off of the HDD is causing performance issues. Especially when playing an ISO. The main question is, if i copied the content of the game to the HDD (BIN or raw data whatever you want to call it) then will the system still need to create the game content on the HDD like normally using a disc? If so then that answers my second question but If not then wouldn't that mean it'll run better? Here's how i see it. If I'm playing a game as an iso, which just mimics a disc on HDD then i'm forcing the system to read from the HDD for the iso, then read and write for the game data as well as the saved info, effectively giving the HDD more work. But if copying (bin+cue) doesn't require a game data folder then that'll free up HDD and sata bandwidth.

Just a thought, i haven't had the chance to try it yet but if someone knows the answer already. Some of the games i'm playing are just having major issues, namely Dragon Age: Origins. It may just be my memory but I don't remember the game running at such low FPS (i swear its running at like 12fps or something its like a flipbook) and having 45 second - 1 minute load times.

Yes you are right, when running disk games from the internal HDD drive both the disk data and the game data are reading off the HDD, this can cause performance issues with some games. What I would recommend is running your ISOs from an external NTFS drive, You can also read folder rips off FAT32 drives, Slight drawback here is that lots of tiny files can cause a slowdown.

Other possible causes for read speed problems could be fragmentation or a failing HDD..

I always play my backup games from internal hdd since years ago, and never had any problem

Btw, there is another additional internal hdd access (read/write) for "cache" files, the internall ps3 hdd has a partition of size 2gb that is used to store temporally game files, and is updated constantly
As example, the games that are divided in chapters (or levels)... when you move on to the next level and appears a "loading" screen, what is happening is that files on the cache partition are being updated (with the ones for the next level you are going to play)

So you have:
-the ISO/JB game itself (read access)
-the gamedata install (read access)
-the game cache (read/write access)

The savegame cant be considered a problem because only happenes eventually, but yeah while diong it can happen that it cummulates to what i said
And just for completion... you have also the trophy installation (that happens in the first boot of the game) and updating (while playing)

But well... as said before, i never had any problem related with speeds when playing from internall hdd
