PS3 noob problems with a CFW PS3 i bought

So i bought a PHAT PS3 with CFW 4.89 evilnat
but, long story short, i had to reformat the HDD, and now i'm lost to what to do to get back where i was.
I spent the whole day reading and watching tutorials: CFW vs HFW, hen, cobra ‍
I just don't want to mess up again...
so i'm asking, please, someone explain me as if i'm really dumb WHAT to DO
 
Welcome to the scene, we're glad to have you. All of us were newbies at one point, so don't fret.


Can you tell us whether your console is still running the CFW? Easy ways to tell would be if your boot logo says Evilnat, and you have Package Manager in your XMB.

Typically when restoring a console that already has CFW installed, the CFW won't be removed, but I figure it's always best to check.
 
Just reinstall EvilNat 4.89 and you will not lose CFW. He also has a new CFW out sometime soon as well. Any 4.89 CFW will work and outside of his I do not trust any of the others.
 
I tried to reinstal CFW EVILNAT 4.89 COBRA 8.3 [CEX] both from usb on the main XMB and from recovery mode and i always get "data corrupted" (8002F2C5) :(

If your console had CFW when you formatted the HDD then as atreyu said, it will accept CFW again without any need to rehack it. Just grab a copy of Evilnat 4.89 and install it the usual way, then you're good to go (note that unless you've previously QA-flagged your console you have to use Evilnat 4.89.x CFW since it won't allow you to downgrade, and Evilnat is the only 4.89 based CFW).

The only thing you need to verify is that you don't accidentally install OFW or HFW because if you do you won't be able to go back to CFW until bgtoolset returns or HEN Flash Patcher is released, so double and triple check that the firmware on your USB drive is CFW. As long as you keep it on CFW you won't need to use any currently-unavailable hacks.
 
... too late, already installed HFW yesterday once i formated the HDD, now i tried CFW and it gives me data corrupted... guess thats why... oh man i'm so sick of this
on top of all this it seems my network card is busted or something, the controller takes forever to respond even when plugged thru usb

If you're not afraid of messing with electronics you can get an E3 hardware flasher and help test HEN Flash Patcher, which can get you from HFW 4.89 to CFW 4.89. The developer is actually looking for testers.

if i can play psn titles on HEN than so be it.
but i'm afraid i cant connect my ps3 to the internet anymore...

i'm shit out a luck aint i

As far as PSN goes HEN is actually better because you need to enable it every time you restart your PS3, so if you don't enable it it looks pretty much like OFW. The only exception is if the game itself actively scans the console for installed homebrew and reports it to the server. Out of all games that still have working online functionality iirc only GTA does that but I might be mistaken.
Note that the only 100% safe way to go on PSN is OFW without any hacks. Some people even buy a second console and keep it on OFW just for that (2nd hand PS3s are dirt cheap these days anyway).
 
What i meant to say is that my ps3's wifi/ethernet capabilities are gone (error 80010201).
i searched high and low and it seems that i can't install HEN without some sort of connection...

That sounds really weird, I doubt it has anything to do with HEN. Try maybe reflashing OFW 4.89 twice.
