PS3 Official Firmware update after jailbreaking.

Hi All,

I currently have an older official firmware but with Evilnat 4.91 installed.

If I installed the official 4.91 firmware what would happen?

More importantly is it even necessary to upgrade the official firmware if Evilnat 4.91 is installed?
 
If you have Evilnat 4.91 installed, you are on custom firmware. If you install official firmware over that you will not only lose all CFW features but you would also have to apply the flash patch again in order to reinstall CFW.

In a nutshell: once you are on CFW such as Evilnat, there is never any need to install OFW ever again. It serves no purpose, it loses the CFW features and requires you to re-jailbreak your PS3 for no good reason. Hope this helps.

You might be misunderstanding things a bit - CFW is not an addon over the official firmware like HEN is; it's a full firmware by itself and it replaces the official firmware. Granted, CFW is basically official firmware modified in a way that removes a lot of restrictions and adds a lot of goodies, but it is still a full firmware file. Therefore you can't have both an official firmware (whether old or new) and Evilnat 4.91 - when you installed the CFW the official firmware was completely overwritten by it, and since Evilnat 4.91 CFW is based on OFW 4.91 then you are currently on 4.91, and not a trace of the older version remains.

As Coldheart said, it's completely pointless to install OFW again, as you will lose your jailbreak and will have to jailbreak your console again through bgtoolset. When a new OFW is released by Sony we just wait for Evilnat (or someone else if he ever retires) to release a CFW based on the new version and then update directly to it.
If for some reason you need to switch to OFW temporarily you can try the DB firmware, which is basically OFW, just patched to allow the reinstallation of CFW without jailbreaking again.
 
some people want to stay on OFW because they don't need the features of CFW. and with CFW there might be a chance to get banned by Sony. even if the chances are slim as far as i know

i used CFW to install a new Blu-ray drive in a FAT, but don't need it otherwise (at least not at the moment) so I reverted back to OFW.

And with bgtoolset it takes like 1 minute to jailbreak again if I ever wanted to.

Well, there's also the DB firmware, which is nearly identical to OFW. The only difference is that it would allow you to install CFW without going through bgtoolset again. AFAIK nobody ever got banned for using it.

That said, even installing DB or OFW does not put you completely in the clear, since that does not remove any user data - If you had any homebrew it remains installed (even though you can't run it) and those pesky games that check for installed homebrew and snitch on you (Destiny, certain CoD games) will still find it. Additionally it does not removed any hacked trophies or trophies from pirated digital games, which can also get you banned if you try to sync them.
The best way to ensure no trace of your system ever having been modded is to flash OFW (or DB) twice then reformat the HDD.
