PS3 Old firmware advice

I recently acquired a backward compatible 60gb console in great condition. It's currently in 100 pieces undergoing a delid, but once it's back together I plan on hacking it. The firmware version currently on the console is 1.8something. The videos I watched said to update the firmware and then proceed with the process, but I'm aware that the 4.89 and now 4.90 versions present problems for a new hack. My question is this - is there a way that I can take advantage of the old firmware that came on the console and hack it straight from there - or would I need to upgrade it to something else first? If I need to wait for updated toolsets and whatnot I certainly can, but if there's a better way, I'd love to take advantage of it. Apologies if this is a silly question and thanks in advance for any help!

Advantage of old firmware is You can install CFW over it directly from USB, just like any original fw. Only people who passed the 3.55 version barrier must looking for exploiting it first via web or patching dump made by hardware flasher. So do NOT update fw, especially to 4.90 which is currently unhackable yet.

So grab the CFW You want and install it. Just like that. If for some reason console would reject it, update to exactly OFW 3.55, an then to any CFW.

The best CEX CFW so far are:
  • 4.84.2 Rebug Rex
  • 4.86.1 Rebug Lite
  • 4.89.1 Evilnat PEX

That's great news! Thank you so much for explaining. So if I download "CFW Evilnat 4.89.3 Cobra 8.4 [PEX] [CEX]" (I couldn't find it with .1 ending), put it on a FAT32 usb drive in an "UPDATE" folder inside a "PS3" folder, and tell the PS3 to update from storage media - that's it? I truly appreciate the help - thank you.

Let us know how it goes when you try this! I have an A01 on FE 2.60 and I am curious!

I've had a board on this firmware, i would advise using a nobd or nobd+nowifi evilnat 4.89.3 firmware - unless you can quarentee all is well with the blueray and wifi board. This old 2.60 firmware has no recovery mode, so will go in a loop, and if hdd is swapped then you are out of luck! - reflash from doing it the nand way.

Fortunatley for me had spare blueray boards so it would continue the update.

@OldDogNewTrick Yes, as I said, like any OFW. If You would have OFW 3.56 or newer, You would be unable to install CFW from USB just like that. But as long Your OFW is 3.55 or older, then You can, without any voodoo. Once You get CFW, You will be able of course to install any firmware version from USB.

Yes, I have in mind 4.89.3. PS3 firmware have several timebombs and one o them are needs of working BluRay and Wi-Fi/BlueTooth module, otherwise it will not allow You to install firmware.

@db260179 If he have broken ODD/BT, he will not install CFW anyway. And if he will, then be able to also install CFW with those patches, in future.

I tested the drive before pulling it apart and a wireless controller worked, so I would assume the wifi/bt board is functioning though I didn't actually connect to wifi. So the plan is Evilnat 4.89.3 regular version and pray I guess - if there is any compelling reason to talk me out of it - please do, lmao. Still trying to get the damn CPU heat spreader off without ruining the chip, but will update here once I install. If I run into problems, I can guarantee I'll be on here asking for help! Thank you again everybody.

It worked, but not first try. I tried updating to Evilnat 4.90 cew straight from 1.82 and got a corrupted data error. I then tried to enter safe mode to install from there and could NOT get the console to enter it. Tried dozens of times and kept getting "single beep, triple beep, regular boot" or "single beep, single beep, off". I decided I would try updating to OFW 3.55 first and did that successfully. Then I ran the Evilnat CFW update through XMB and it worked! Webman and Multiman MOD are installed, so I think I should be good to go. Still haven't tried getting into safemode since the update - hoping that maybe that was a result of the firmware being SO old, that the button press combo for that wasn't baked in yet. Good luck with your venture!

I'm really glad it worked out for you. I still have yet to dive into this yet. I think I'm going to soon. I asked NSC about this a while back in his YouTube channel and this was his response.

Do you think that installing Roger's over the 3.55 OFW then the QA flag is a safety measure?

Yep will not allow you to jump that far. Both my BC systems I got in low firmware one on 1.02 and one at 2.80 once you install any firmware from 3.00 to 3.55 you can install directly that way. Check out enabling QA flags and enable System Update Debug. You can then freely change firmware. You can do it without a USB stick then and a much faster install.

Just install CFW Rebug 3.55.4 over mentioned OFW 2.80, via Rebug Toolbox set QA Flag, after that normally You should be able to install Evilnat but You can't, for unknown to me reason (error will be misleading, pointing to HDD/USB problem). Instead, install eg. CFW Rebug 4.84.2 Rex and then newest Evilnat if You prefer.

What was described is ok but also You wouldn't be able to install Evilnat just like that. And good luck with finding Rogero. ;] Rebugs are everywhere, because it is best CFW family IMO.

Ok thank you I appreciate the response. I already have the latest Evilnat CFW and I have 4.84 rebug Rex on my computer. Where is a trusted source with the 3.55 Rebug you referenced?

You don't need trusted source but checksums (can be found on dev wiki, but below are calculated moment ago), eg MD5 for below firmwares.

Rebug 3.55.4:

Rebug 4.84.2 Rex:

Just pointing out that recovery mode was introduced in system software version 2.50. Anything below that did not have recovery mode, so trying to enter it will result in exactly what happened to you here :-)

I finally got around to jailbreaking my PS3 that was on OFW 2.60. Thanks everyone for the help. It was so simple. I just updated to rebug 3.55.4 then went straight to Evilnat 4.91.2. Thanks again.
