PS3 Old in-game menu restoration

Is it possible to restore the original in-game menu? Its the one prior to the 2.40 update that introduced the in-game xmb and I remember it being similar to the one used for PS1/PS2 games. I've always disliked how restrictive and laggy the in-game xmb is and would prefer to just have all the usable options in one easy to access place. Thanks.

XMB always was the same, except added in around 2.60 "stars", new font and ugly color changing based on date & time. While "stars" can be disabled and font change to old, colors unfortunately not (old pitch black waves are no longer be possible to get AFAIR).

How laggy or not in-game XMB is, depend of game RAM usage. High demanding games slow it down significantly.

Was it really? Its been a while, so obviously I could be misremembering things, but I'm pretty sure you couldn't access the XMB while in-game in the older firmwares. I might need to do a bit of research on this one. Also, most of the games I play are demanding, so I really don't have a choice lol.

Now I have some doubts. Anyway, I'm not sure if this could be bring back, probably it is not a matter of just a module replacement.

I'm not sure if it's possible without rebuilding certain files, but I do agree that the lag for some games is pretty bad, especially when trying to exit. it's like only a few MBs away from crashing the entire system. however, I think the ps3 has 256MBs dedicated to games, and another 256MBs dedicated to the os. the 360 has it shared iirc, which is why some games are only possible on the 360 like that notorious gears of war 3, which its source code was leaked, but only playable on a decr console iirc.

You are indeed correct, at some point in time Sony revamped whole kernel of the system in order to provide such possibility of having XMB in-game (with lots of limitatons). This decision was made due to a fact, that Xbox 360 already had the access to blades dashboard during gameplay.
Because these changes as I mentioned, touches deeply in the system itself, I am not sure if there is a possibility to revert to previous in-game menu (without installing previous OS version), but I might be wrong.
