Title = Tales of the Abyss
ID = SLUS_213.86
Media = DVD
OPL version = 0.9.3 and latest OPL Build 1772
Device = HDD
Mode(s) = Tried all combinations
Compatible = See notes
Notes = The sounds tend to glitch up or stop working and get freezes in loading screens
Whatever modes I try, I still have world map music glitching up or not playing. I hope there is a fix for
it.

@RetroGamer90s Meeeeeh... That's OPL DB... A FORK of OPL!

This thread here is for the official OPL, not the one from Ps2-home.com!
Please use/try the build(s), jolek provided!

Apologies. I am fairly new at OPL. I actually got the Adapter about two weeks ago and started testing.

Most games I tested works just fine with MDMA 0. If I encounter a freeze, I would usually try again with different modes like Mode 1 or 2 and it would work.
But whatever mode combinations I try with Tales of the Abyss there is always music or sound glitches.

I actually have a save file with the music/sound glitch problem always occurring 100% of the time. I use this save with different OPL modes to test if the problem is solved or not. I even tried forcing the game to run at 480p but same result. As I read someone saying it fixed the problem.

You can check the music problem location from this link

at 4:15

Of course it's not the only place that it happened. It can occur at random. But this one place happenes 100% of the time

The OPL version I tested was from PS2-Home.com. I thought they were all the same. I tried the one Jolek provided and sadly the same result.
Tried both 1502 and 1514.

I have Gamestar adapter. I own an official PS2 adapter but it does not support Sata HD
I tried playing through USB. and the game size is actually more than 4GB and used USBUtil to transfer the game to my usb, you can find it here https://www.reddit.com/r/ps2/comments/4kvv98/play_games_over_4gb_usb_opl_fat_32/ ,

Anyway, I am surprised. Either OPL has come a long way or it's because my USB is USB 3.0 but the intro cutscene did not stutter. I remember trying usb years ago and it stuttered like hell with Final Fantasy X-2. And never used it again.

Back on topic, The sound problem got fixed and I was surprised. Maybe because the HDD speed cause the sound glitch.. But continuing on playing led to either freeze or the outside world music stops playing. I actually can trigger the freeze every time. Just fight some monsters in a dungeon continue the story. And once you are in the outside world it freezes or music does not play.

I tried all the modes again to no avail sadly.

GameStar adapter it is a clone adapter and is proven to have less compatibility than the IDE adapter, and they cause problems for
games that don't happen on the official one with an IDE hard drive.
To connect a SATA hard drive it is more reliable to use the original IDE adapter by changing only the connector as Maxdiypower does.

This is an example of games that don't work with the GameStar adapter, and that work perfectly with the original IDE adapter:

Micro Machines
Alpine Racer 3
Taito Memories II Joukan - It is needed to skip the videos for avoid a freeze in the intro.

Games that use clone adapters with the internal HDD load should not be reported, because most of these problems are not
caused by OPL but by clone adapters.
The compatibility lists were created using always the original IDE adapter which is the most reliable.

It is also not a good idea to use MDMA 0 by default if you are doing this, it is proven that this can cause slowdowns to games,
you must leave the default speed that the UDMA 4 OPL always has, and use only MDMA 0 if it is surely needed for a game.

Best regards.

I tried modding my official PS2 Adapter with the Gamestar adapter but it wont detect the HDD.

With the Gamestar Adapter the games rarely launch with UDMA 4. It will always launch with MDMA 0

As I said in my previous post, I did try Tales of the Abyss with USB drive and it still had freezing and music not playing sometimes. So is the compatibility better with internal HDD ? other then better loading and no stuttering ?

Do not mod an official adapter with parts of a cloned one, this not works.
Too bad if the Gamestar clone adapter only works mainly with MDMA 0, what a trash.
Internal HDD is the one with better compatibility than USB and SMB and not only about
sttutering in videos, but i don't know how run this game with USB.

Do you have a save game very near of the 4:15 minute of the video where the sound disappears
for check it?
If you have an IDE HDD you can try it with the official IDE network adapter, without any mod.

Best regards.

Well.. I think it's safe to say I tried everything now.

I found an old IDE hard drive in my first PC that I bought about 14+ years ago and it didn't fit my PS2 official adapter for some reason. I opened the adapter and adjusted the pin location slightly to the left to fit. Then downloaded HD loader. Format the drive. installed Tales of the Abyss through HD loader server through ethernet. And got the same result as through USB. The only difference is that it does load faster.

Well I guess I am just not lucky with this game.

Appreciate the support either way.

@RetroGamer90s, It is very strange that the original network adapter does not connect well with an IDE hard drive, that is
not normal, i think that when you want to modify it previously with parts of the Gamestar something you have left wrong
in the original adapter, or that old IDE hard drive have a size slightly larger than normal like happens with some
Western Digital HDD's.

Please you can post in the thread a save game very near of the 4:15 minute of the video you posted where
the sound disappears for check it?

The official PS2 adapter does work much better than the gamestar one. It does not hang at the green screen when choosing UDMA 4 and loads fast. I will never go back to the gamestar one, especially since it does not have ethernet support.

I uploaded my save file to check. The sound problem happens all around the game though.

Hopefully this problem gets fixed in future OPL versions.

Best regards

@RetroGamer90s, thank you, i tested your save game and you're right, i'm afraid you found one of the few games that doesn't work well with the internal HDD.

The truth is that looking at the compatibility list, the Tales of the Abyss appears with music/sound problems having been tested with OPL 0.9.2, even using the Callbacktimer function that was removed later:

http://sx.sytes.net/oplcl/games.aspx

I thought that after so many years this game would already be fixed, since this is a popular game and nobody has complained in so long, but it is clear that it does not work well.

When you load the save game you appear in the field next to the flying ship and Shurrey Hill, entering the Shurrey Hill the audio and music works, but if you go back to the field again, the music and sound
disappear completely, the whole game is silent.

Once this error has not occurred and when you return to the field the audio has continued to work, but if you insist on entering Shurrey Hill and returning the game you will always be silent on the field.

The second or third time you enter the Shurrey Hill consecutively, the loading screen stays black for a long time and i have come to believe that the game has freezed, but in the end it has loaded the screen.

It also happens sometimes when you get on and off the flying ship that a clearly corrupted SFX sound
is heard.

I tried many of the OPL and Compatibility Modes but nothing fixes it.

Then i remembered that the user @Zarper had sprite corruption problems with the game Phantasy Star
generation 1, he compiled a Beta with numerous speeds different from Mode 1, and it helped him to fix
the problem.

Specifically he used the 900Ks speed of Mode 1:

https://www.psx-place.com/threads/open-ps2-loader-game-bug-reports.19401/page-10

I have used the same 900ks beta, entered and exited from Shurrey Hill to field 5 or 6 times in a row and the
audio has not disappeared, and not ocurred the corrupted SFX of the flying ship.

Download this pack:

https://github.com/ifcaro/Open-PS2-Loader/files/2672594/OPLv2.zip

Take the Beta called "OPL 0.9.ELF", not any of the others, when you load it, activate Mode 1, do not activate
any other Compatibility Mode, do not use MDMA 0, use the default UDMA 4.

Go in and out several times in a row from Shurrey Hill to the field and play the game, i hope it works
fine for you also, let me know.

Best regards.

Thank you! This version actually did fix the music problem. I used Mode 1 and UDMA 4 just like you said.

This is very good step in fixing the problems with this game. I will be using this version from now on :)

However, it sadly didn't fix a certain freeze that occurred while testing the game with various versions. Weirdly I can trigger this freeze 100% of the time if I do certain behavior first.

You start the save file. Enter Shurrey Hill. Kill the two monsters in the beginning of the dungeon. Exit shurrey Hill and ride the ship to the center of the map to ascend. Then the war cutscene will trigger. Then you will be given a choice to either go to Engeve or to Kaitzur. Choose the latter and once the cutscene ends, go outside in the world map and it will freeze the game.

This will happen 100% of the time whenever I tried it like this.

You can follow this guide to know where to go after exiting Shurrey Hill. It will only take like 4 minutes to trigger

Start at 6:20 and the freeze will occur at 18:53

I could just ignore it and continue playing, but that means certain behaviors later could cause other freezes like this one. So it's better to be fixed.

Other then this freeze, I will continue testing with the version you provided and report back. Thank you very much.

@RetroGamer90s, when i arrive to the center of the map there is not any war cutscene that triggers,
it shows a litle island called "The Watchers Home, Yulia House" where i can enter, but do not runs
any war cutscene.

Why do you say that at first you have to enter Shurrey Hill only to kill the first two enemies that are common,
and then return to the field and take the ship?
Taking this action to enter Shurrey Hill and kill two enemies, is it supposed to trigger the war cutscene upon
reaching the center of the map?
I think there is something that i am not doing well or that you need to explain.

@Roshea & @RetroGamer90s thanks for your reports and support.
I added them into 1st post.

@El_Patas thanks for additional tests.

Best regards.
@jolek, you are welcome, thank you.

Best regards.

You don't need to enter Shurrey Hills to trigger the war cutscene.

You can directly fly the ship at the center of the map and you will receive this message "The power of the sephiroth can be used to lift the Albiore ot the Outer Lands" then you press circle to ascend the ship to the outerlands. Then the war cutscene will trigger.

You can actually follow the Youtube video starting from 6:20 mark in the video to know where to go.

The part about killing the two monsters are what I do to trigger the freeze. When you first start the save, enter Shurrey Hill and go straight the next area you will see two monsters roaming around just kill them and exit the place. Then start watching the walkthrough. starting from 6:20 and the freeze will at exactly 18:53.

If I don't kill these two monsters first, it won't freeze at 18:53 mark in the video for some weird reason.

Hope there is a fix for it.

Regards

@RetroGamer90s, after press the circle to ascend is needed to advance the ship a little for
activate the video.
Well, is true, the game freezes, maybe the game needs even more slow speed of Mode 1 or
it is a bug from developers?

The problem to test this freeze is that is very time time consuming for arrive to the place where
the freeze occurs, the game lets you to skip FMV videos with the start button, but not the cutscenes,
and there is 2 cutscenes enough long. A cheat would be useful to skip the cutscenes.

I'll try some things now.

Best regards.

EDIT: After a lot of tests, nothing fixed the freeze, but then i discovered that if you
don't move your character when you enter the field, (keep it completely quiet), and left
the enemies come to you and enter in a battle, then the game do not freezes, but the
music is missing in the field.

Maybe the different speeds of Mode 1 is not the key for fix the music, because i don't
understand this behavior about don't move your character to avoid the freeze at the start.

Using the speed of 1200Kb or upper the glitched SFX of the flying ship occurs.
But using the 1000Kb or lower no, maybe the key is to try the speeds between
the 0.9 and 0.98, but they are not available.

Please you can try the game loading through USB for check the freeze
with the 0.9 you are using?
