PS2 [Open PS2 Loader] Game Bug Reports

Hello all,

I was wondering if there was any fixes yet for Tales of the Abyss? Last post I saw mentioning it was from a couple years ago.

I'm using the latest stable build, 1.1.0, and the game freezes solid when I encounter the first white liger in the Cheagle Woods.

Impossible Mission SLES_546.86 doesn't seems to work with OPL (BSOD at boot). I'll keep testing it with more OPL versions and combination modes. I'll install it on USB for other tests since on HDD I have to hard-power-off the ps2 each time.

I couldn't get the game to work in any way using OPL (BSOD at boot regardless of the build).

It is a funny puzzle game. If you want to play it without using the optical drive, put it on USB and play with PS2ESDL 0.821

I have some questions about this thread.

The first post shows us the following "incompatible games" list:

  • Star Wars - Episode III - Revenge of the Sith
  • Hitman - Blood Money
  • XIII
  • Twisted metal: Black
  • ega Ages 2500 Series Vol. 1: Phantasy Star generation:1
  • Super Dragon Ball Z
  • Transformers
  • Ace Combat Squadron Leader/The unsung war
  • Vampire: Darkstalkers Collection
  • Max PAyne
  • Deus ex
  • Phantasy Star Universe & Phantasy Star Universe: Ambition of the Illuminus
  • Klonoa 2: Lunatea's Veil
  • Buzz! Junior - Ace Racers
  • Buzz! The Mega Quiz
  • Buzz! The Big Quiz
  • ATV Offroad Fury 4
  • Xenosaga Episode I: Der Wille zur Macht
  • Tales of the Abyss
  • Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell
  • Berserk: Millennium Falcon-hen: Seima Senki no Shou
  • Critical Velocity
  • Summon Night Granthese: Horobi no Tsurugi to Yakusoku no Kishi

Are those ALL the imcompatible games? Or are there other games not listed there? (i'm using opl 1.1.0 with HDD and save my games on an authentic memory card, if that matters)

If I land on a game which has glitches and bugs.. how does one make decisions like "oh! I'll use this specific compatibility mode!"? How do you choose a compatibility mode over the other modes? Is there a list of games + the modes they require on a web page somewhere?

You should also go to the links on the related discussions. Many of those games perfectly work with certain OPL versions.

i.e.
- Super Dragon Ball Z works from rev 1633 onward.
- Ace Combat Squadron Leader/The unsung war works perfectly on OPL 0.9.2

There are also workarounds for some games, like you can play the NTSC version of ATV Offroad Fury 4.

Thats nice but... where do you get that information? Where is it stated which game works and which are broken? And how do you pick a "compatibility mode" when you need one? Eeny, meeny, miny, moe?

You need to strictly follow the rules of science: test, observe and take note ;) I used to do some tests in the "good" old days.

Problems are usually caused by uncorrect timing or speed when reading, lack of memory...
As an internal HDD user:

MODE 2 sync mode can help with FMV stuttering on many games and also freezing (this is a good mode to try at first. If it solve you don't have to compromise speed or IGR for example).

DMA speed is the second thing to look into. It helps for the same problems as MODE 2 and also solves audio issues sometimes that MODE 2 couldn't (usually using MDMA 0 on new fast HDDs).

MODE 1 is to check if even MDMA 0 cannot solve (reading speed will be even slower and more precise. It won't be slower than optical drive anyway).

MODE 3 and 6 you allow the Ps2 memory to work in the cleaner state (you'll free some memory used by OPL). It is needed for avoid some games freezing or restore functions (like pad not working) at the cost of losing the IGR (in the case of MODE 6 ON).

Also one of the first things to do in case of problems is to disable VMC (always use 8MB MC/VMCs when testing. Some games are VMC compatible but freeze with >8MB MC/VMC)

Keep in mind some MODES have been changed through the revisions. For example this is the description of MODEs on OPL 0.9.2:
OPL - Swallow's Idea (swaidea.com)

and this is a more recent chart: PS2-HOME.com - PS2 Homebrew and Tools - OPL Compatibility MODES

What links?

On the first page, for example if you check #8 (Ace Combat 5), below the issue's description there's a link that'll lead you here: PS2 - Open PS2 Loader | Page 27 | PSX-Place
So you'd have known that that game works on OPL 0.9.2
Unfortunately not all links are updated, so you' have to manually look into thread for some games.

That said, I'm not testing anymore since some time, the best thing is to follow TnA suggestion, use the newest builds and report back any problem (or good news).

I think ill stick with the beta builds and MechaPwn the buggy games. so.....nobody keeps track of what works and what doesnt anymore? not even a list of compatibility modes for games? too much trial and error for me.. mechapwn will fix buggy games for me. i prefer waiting for disc loading than trying to figure out how to fix my games.

Well... Multiple of the games on that list now certainly work since XPARAM-Support and "out of bounds access" was added!

In my original question i just wanted to know if they were the only games that were unplayable because the only one there that interested me was tales of the abyss, which i played using mechapwn. I don't care about the other games of the list.

Yes, there's more than one compatibility list, here: PS2 - [Open PS2 Loader] Game Compatibility Lists | PSX-Place

In the process of improving OPL (as with any other software) compatibilty can change in unexpected ways. Something might get fixed as side effect (you made a change to fix a game and also some other could benefit from it or... get broken).

You obviously cannot test the whole Ps2 library at each OPL revision, unless you pay someone for doing it as a full-time job ;)

None of early EA Sports games works. Just tried with HDD didnt tried other methods.

Games that I tried is NBA Live 2001, NHL 2001 and as I read Madden NFL 2001 and the 2002 versions of these games doesnt work. Idk if its fixable.

I just tried those games on USB, and it didn't boot on me either. The weird thing is, if you boot up OPL with PCSX2 (with the virtual USB drive image set up, of course), then run the games from there, it works. Tested on PCSX2 v1.7.3581 with OPNPS2LD-v1.2.0-Beta-2012-b84c2bc (I'm still using Win8.1 so no QT build for me).

Madden 2001/2002 definitely won't work no matter what the storage or the OPL version is.
