[OPL THEME] inceBtion - Playstation 2 Open PS2 Loader Theme "inceBtion" by Berion & Ripto

inceBtion
brought to you by @Berion and @Ripto
v1.5 - Designed for HD Widescreen ON!
(SD and Widescreen off will still work, but images will not have accurate dimensions.)

inceBtion is a theme for all versions of Open PS2 Loader (1.0.0 and above tested) that offers a completely new approach to the device page layout.
Inspired by the work of PS2FraMin and Inception theme projects, @Berion has designed and brought to reality the most clean and official looking OPL interface available from scratch. Every asset in this theme has been designed and created by @Berion, assembled and tested via conf_theme.cfg by @Ripto.

inceBtion is designed to honor PS2 SCPH-3XXXX hardware's presentation.
With the console split in two across the middle, we find our games and interface information in between. This is theme works with all PS2 models despite the FAT 3k appearance.

The background is animated by plasma colors, and you can change the Plasma color by changing the configuration colors in conf_theme.cfg

This theme is designed to work best with OPL's display settings as follows:
Cover Art: On
Video Mode: 1080i
Widescreen: On

The theme will work without those settings, but it will appear misshaped and cramped the further away you go from the recommendations.

You are free to modify, use, and share these files and themes as long as you are providing credit when doing so via readme or conf_theme.cfg
You are not to sell or commercially use any of these assets. Contact @Berion for further inquiries on usage rights.

Do you recommend any special size for "ICO" images?
I think the "action icons" were missing, without them some first-time users might get confused.
It is not essential but it makes navigation easier.

Edit: I just saw it, they should be 128x128 and 256x256.

I just registered here to say thanks and to congratulate you guys on this fantastic theme. It really is the most beautiful theme!

But I am also having some minor issues which may need further testing:

  • The loading icon is centered (above the OPL logo when booting). I think bottom right would be a better place for it.
  • I like how this theme visualizes devices but I would also love a clean version (without the yellow light indicator etc.)
  • I get frequent glitches when scrolling through the games list (like artifacts from the ART files appearing for a fraction of a second- see attached pictures)
  • sometimes the complete screen glitches out and looks like a piece of modern art :)
  • sometimes the theme crashes and freezes the console when scrolling through my games list
I tried this with my fat PAL PS2 39004 on Official OPL v1.0.0. Theme version 1.5 (2dblue).

I thinking that glitches came from VRAM issues related to your ART. Do not use *.jpg and do not use 24 or 32bit *.png. Only 8bit *.png are safe.

Also, consider update OPL to 1.1.0 or one of 1.20 betas.

Okay, I´ll check all the ART files again but I think they all are 8bit png. Most of them come from the recommended HD packs linked above. I only had to pick a few that were missing from other sources and edited them to meet these specs. I´ll check again. Sizes are 256x256 for disc and 512x725 (or 512x512) for cover, is that acceptable?

So I updated OPL (first to 1.1.0 then to 1.20beta) but it didn´t change anything. I then checked every file in my OPL "ART" folder for conformity. Out of roughly 500 total images in that folder there were six that were actually 32-bit png format. All those were *LGO files coming from a very recent data pull in OPLManager. All other files were 8-bit png. So I deleted the six files that were 32-bit but the glitching unfortunately remains. What else could it be?

Are you loading the theme from usb and the art from usb?
I haven't encountered this issue on mu scph3091

I used a usb stick to transfer theme and art to the internal hdd, if that´s what you mean.
So everything is loading from the internal storage then, and not from the USB?
This is strange. I don't encounter this issue on my end when trying to recreate it.

EDIT:
Could you zip and upload your files, excluding any POPS or games.
Perhaps I could review and find the conflicts.

@Ripto I could do that. What exactly should be inside the zip?

Also, here are some additional infos about my setup:
  • Console is SCPH-39004 (GH-022)
  • FMCB 1.966 is loaded from a MemCardPro2 in MC Slot 1, this is used to start OPL (official V1.1.0)
  • There is also FHDB installed on the HDD but this is not used normally. Using this to start OPL (when the MemCardPro2 is not present) leads to the same glitches in the theme
  • Games and Artwork are on an internal HDD (WD blue, 1 TB)
  • Games were transferred to HDD via HDLBatchInstaller
  • Artwork originally came via OPL Manager but was eventually replaced with the HD packs from here
  • All artwork files were additionally transcoded to 8bit-png via redketchup.io
The issue only occurs when going back and forth between games in OPL for which the artwork files have already been loaded. So when I startup OPL and only scroll down through my games list everything is normal (loading circle appears for a second, artwork is loaded, no glitches). But when I start scrolling up again, the glitching occurs.

@FZG
Make sure you don't have more than one mode activated in "auto" (USB, SMB, HDD, etc.).
The theme must be located in the path of the used media.
example:
USB The theme must be loaded from USB.
SMB Theme must load from SMB.
If you are loading the theme from SMB (activated in auto) and you want to use USB (activated in auto) there may be freezes.

Yes, only "HDD Device Start Mode" is set to auto, the rest is off. I just tested some other themes and realized that the fault can happen there too but it is noticeably harder to trigger and doesn´t always appear. OPL is also sometimes crashing when frequently changing between themes in "Display Settings". No idea what is wrong.. Games work fine though.

It seems as if OPL video mode / output resolution plays an important role here. Reducing to "HDTV 1280x720p" (or lower) almost completely eliminates all glitches.

256x256 for disc box is enough and 128x128 for disc if I'm not mistaken. Tests proved that 512x512 is unnecessary to high in compare to quality gain (problem lies in how OPL scalling images on a grid).
I could do that. What exactly should be inside the zip?
Everything from "hdd0:/+OPL" except "hdd0:/+OPL/VMC/".

It was tested by Ripto on 1080i and was fine.

I forgot to answer to that, so doing it now: ;)
The loading icon is centered (above the OPL logo when booting). I think bottom right would be a better place for it.
Not an option due to Network Adaptor there (SMB etc.). Maybe top right below bar but... that would fix OPL logo crippling during booting but cripple GUI. So IMO center for that is better choice.
I like how this theme visualizes devices but I would also love a clean version (without the yellow light indicator etc.)
Yellow diode came from yellow diode of HDD activity inside console. Without it, you couldn't distinguish when IDE category is on or off. Maybe I could make it just brighter than normal but I that would be more as per user demand asset than something bundled officially.

@Berion Fair enough, I understand that every design element is where it is for a reason.

I´ll prepare the zip of my +OPL folder later today, when I have time. Interested to see if you can find out what is causing the glitches.
