PS3 Optimal way to store games?

Given that I heard that some games (specifically on X360) perform better if the installation is split between the HDD and disc, utilised simultaneously, I wanted to know what would be the optimal way to store games on this system.

Would it be:
  • on the internal hard drive (PKG),
  • disc + data on internal hard drive,
  • ISO on external + data on internal hard drive,
  • ISO and data on internal hard drive?
I did some basic testing on my own and found little to no difference between PKG on internal, and ISO on external + data on internal, so I was curious if anyone already performed tests like this.

No tests, but I believe that PKG versions simply help us to save disk space because when ISO is used then some data is installed on hard drive and it's like a duplicate.

PKG is not format on which games are stored on HDD. It is only archive from which they are unpacking.

Most games caching data on HDD in game dir, so in these cases, better is used digital distributed versions.

That's what I've meant. Install it and forget about it :)

Digital distributed games will also install game data and stuff on your HDD, so you actually spent more space holding the game on your HDD plus it's own game data.

It will load faster, of course, but it's not the optimal way to store games as game + data > data only (the game itself is stored in the BD disc).

That's not fully true, they aren't. ;) Some disc games can working fully from disc, most needs put stuff in "dev_hdd0/game". AFAIK, all digital games not needing any kind of duplicating or caching data in game dir. Both distribution type games using "dev_hdd1" as cache, but it is cleaning on every boot.

Well, except online community stuff like in all Little Big Planet and user saves. And Uncharted 3 which also storing saves in game data (and btw it is bugged, caching there making sometimes not updating savedata dir). Plus GT6 which adds also extra stuff there like disc game.

You can run a lot of PKG games from USB via GAMEI, this can save a lot of HDD space, but some games won't work using this method.

You can also convert PKG games to ISO and run them from USB, this also saves space, but some games may still install data (sometimes the entire game, actually), and again, not all games will work with this method.
