PS2 Phantasy Star Universe OPL black screen

That's due to the SATA-Adapter causing incompatibilities, like @El_Patas wrote.

I can try it on an original NWA as well as USB and MX4SIO, when I get the time.

Edit: I merged the 2 threads.

I'm using Game Star SATA adapter. I can only play via USB or OPL 0.93 with Mode 8.
@Rockman98, Do not report games with the GameStar or other chinese clone network adapters, do not use them.
Buy the original network adapter and you will enjoy the Phantasy Star games from the internal HDD in OPL v1.0.0 without any Modes.

Best regards.

I bought and received the connector of Bitfunx v2.0 to modify my original IDE network adapter to SATA
and connect a SATA SSD disk.

After modifying it, i have tried both Phantasy Star games in their PAL versions:

Phantasy Star Universe (PAL) (SLES-54308)
Phantasy Star Universe - Ambition of the Illuminus (PAL) (SLES-54892)

Both games have worked perfectly with OPL v1.0.0 without any compatibility Modes, exactly the
same as loaded with the unmodified IDE adapter and the IDE HDD.

Who wants to connect SATA disks as internal HDD buy an original IDE adapter
and the Bitfunx v2.0 SATA connector to modify it.

Tested with a Crucial disc SSD SATA 2,5" MX500 500GB.

It is noticeable in an SSD that you gain certain seconds in access times compared to mechanical disks when
is connected as internal HDD, it is great.

Best regards.

Sorry my bad english.
Phantasy Star Universe (SLUS_211.94) work fine use OPL v093 rev 851. mode 8 on. No VMC.
PS2 fat, Gamestar adapter, hdd sata 2.5" 500GB.
I use OPl 1957 DB for booting from internal hdd, then choose OPL 0.93 in APPS to play.

There are known issues with some SATA controllers like GameStar one on OPL v1.0.0 and newer.

But why You booting OPL v0.9.3 from OPL DB is a mystery for me. ;p

Because I don't want to change my internal Hdd OPL 1957 DB to OPL v0.93.
I only use OPL v0.93 to play Phantasy Star Universe, so I only add OPL v.093 to APPS.
It work fine for me, I even can use Codebreaker.elf to cheat.

I usually have 3 different OPL versions. They're in the same path so I just need to rename.

For example, my main OPL is named BOOT.ELF, then I have 093BOOT.ELF and 092BOOT.ELF.
FMCB is set to autoboot to BOOT.ELF (new/main OPL I use).

If I want to play, i.e. Ace Combat 5, I rename (with Ule) 092BOOT.ELF to BOOT.ELF, so the Ps2 boot directly to the right OPL version. After finished the game I revert things back to default.

It is quicker, since you don't have to boot OPL 2 times at every Ps2 startup.

Thanx for the advice.

I have the same problem as OP. I have the GameStar adapter and the following games will not work:
Final Fantasy XI - Online - Vana'diel Collection 2008 (USA)
Phantasy Star Universe (USA)
Phantasy Star Universe - Ambition of the Illuminus (USA)
All give a black screen on loading. I notice all the games are the ones that use an internet connection to play.

Here's a list of PS2 games that use the online functionality: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_PlayStation_2_online_games
Some of those titles may be affected as well.

I think I will try El_Pata's method of buying an original IDE adapter and the Bitfunx v2.0 SATA connector to modify it.

Today, I got the 10350 Official Sony Network Adaptor and installed the Bitfunx v2.0 SATA connector.
Phantasy Star Universe (USA) & Phantasy Star Universe - Ambition of the Illuminus (USA) were working with OPL.
But, I'm just getting a blank screen with Final Fantasy XI - Online - Vana'diel Collection 2008 (USA).
This should at least load into the title screen?
Is there any way to get that game to load? I have tried changing the modes to 1, 3, & 6 to ON.
And I have tried setting the UDMA to 0; still nothing.
I can't find any information about this problem by Googling either.

Just a note about the Bitfunx v2.0 SATA connector:
The Bitfunx v.2 didn't really work for me. It was temperamental, sometimes it would detect the HDD other times not. Because of this, I suspect the Bitfunx v.2 is only compatible with the 10280 model adapter and not the 10350.

An update to this:
I recently purchased a SCPH-50001/N.
It came with the network adapter: SCPH-10281

Both the games:
- Phantasy Star Universe (USA)
- Phantasy Star Universe - Ambition of the Illuminus (USA)
Are loading 100% of the time through OPL with this network adapter with the Bitfunx v2.0 SATA connector.
I suggest there's a high chance that the SCHP-10350 model network adapters are not fully compatible with the Bitfunx v2.0 SATA connector.

One game I'd like to get some confirmation on: Final Fantasy XI - Online - Vana'diel Collection 2008 (USA)
That game is not loading at all for me, I keep getting a blank screen.
Is this normal? Like, is that how it is for everyone?

Phantasy Star Universe [SLUS_211.94] & Phantasy Star Universe Ambition of the Illuminus [SLUS_216.31]:

OPL 1294 SMB - works well
OPL 1307 SMB - black screen on startup
OPL 2218 SMB - black screen on startup

My PS2 model is SCPH-90008. Compatibility modes do not help. I use redump images and don't use PADEMU, VMC, GSM.
