PS3 please help a n00b: can't play ps2 or psx on cex cfw ps3

Hello everyone. First post.

I have a CECHA01 Fat PS3 without a bluray drive in it. I now have evilnat 4.91.2 nobd CEX CFW installed and all seems well.

I can rip my ps3 disc on PC and play several of my games only in folder format via webman-mod or managunz. (Little Big Planet refuses to run no matter what I do)

I cannot play ps3 iso format.

I cannot play ps2 iso or psx bin/cue format. I get red errors on top right after payload is successfully mounted.

PS2 says "Error! /dev_hdd0/ps2iso/gamename.iso"

PSX says "Error! INDEX 01 00:00:00"

I have a fully backwards COK-001 motherboard, I just don't have a BD drive in the unit. Not sure if that is a problem or not.

1TB internal SSD was formatted via the OFW before update to evilnat.

I hope I'm just having n00b problems. I've learned a lot so far. The update loop was a crazy experience to solve, luckily I have my BD daughter board still, or my console would have been bricked. Edit: The daughter board is NOT currently installed since the nobd cfw was installed.

Thanks for reading.

Replying to myself here to help keep track of progress.

Re-flashed my (Japanese) OG (COK-001) Fat 60GB to Evilnat 4.91.2 BETA-14 NOBD PEX, no change.

Using a (USA) backup 80GB COK-002 Fat with a WORKING BD, I used Evilnat 4.91.2 BETA-14 PEX (with BD support) and wow, PS2 and PS1 discs load and run. I also used Multiman to rip a PS2 as ISO and using netEMU, the ISO runs. (I do not need netEMU for the disc, however...)

Back to OG Fat, this time, logged into PSN, tried Little Big Planet, since it worked fine on the 80GB unit, nothing. Begins launch and back to XMB...
PSX fails with INDEX error (above)
PS2 fails by attempting to launch, then returns to XMB

What's different between units:
1. 60GB (OG) unit has a Japanese COK-001 motherboard. I bought it at a "Hardoff" store in 2016 for literally 8 US dollars. (1,000 JPY). 80GB Fat is one I got from my cousin in the US, where I live.
2. using Evilnat NOBD on 60GB unit, using save rev FW but BD support on 80GB.
3. No BluRay drive on 60GB unit, 80GB has a working BD drive.
4. 60GB unit has a SATA SSD, not a mechanical HDD, 80GB unit has a mechanical HDD.

Wondering if the EvilNAT firmware has an issue with other region motherboards or do I literally need a BD in my unit?

You can't play any disc or ISO games on noBD CFW.

That special CFW version is meant to be used only to bypass the infamous boot loop that happens when the BD drive is broken or missing, not for everyday usage.

Ah, this is helpful.

Now that I am on CFW, may I use a "BD" capable firmware now and be able to run ISOs, or will I get stuck in the loop, even with CFW?

Thank you!

You need to put a working, compatible BD drive for your PS3 model in order to install the full CFW. After that, you must remarry it in order to be able to use it.

If you install the full CFW without the BD drive, you will still be able to exit the boot loop by using the noBD variant.

Never install OFW, always stay on CFW.

Understood. I'll source another BD drive.

Many thanks for your help.

until you can get a new drive (or if you still have the old drive you can just connect it, even if it doesn't work properly as long as its detected it would allow you to install normal CFW) there is always PS1classics and PS2Classics, ps1 classics usually play better then ISO's anyway, Ps2 classics on the other hand are not as good on a backwards compat ps3 but its still a option if you want to play some games until you can get a new drive.
