PS2 POPStarter 2019/06/05

Hello everyone! I've been lurking for quite some time now - this forum is a source of so much stuff you can do with your old consoles, I want to thank everyone participating!

For months I've been trying to use POPStarter (using PS2 Slim). Following ShaolinAssassin's tutorials for both SMB and USB loading, stricktly.

Whenever I start it, it gives me black screen and only resetting the console fixes it. Whenever I use SMB mode (or a patched version of the ELF file to enter debug mode), it shows everything as being 'Done', 'Loaded', 'Connected', etc - no sign of any error at all - and then black screen. I'm using build 2019/06/05, with USB drivers 2019/01/14. I've also tried older versions of the ELF with the same result. The net modules are filled in correctly (every time it manages to write the VMC files in the destination folder, both in SMB and USB mode), so there shouldn't be any issue with read/write permissions (I use the same numbers to play PS2 ISO files via LAN). For example, when loading via SMB, the final 2 lines read:

Connecting to smb... CONNECTED!

FFS Wrapper r6a : 35

(that second line can be actually a little different, the photo I took is not that good and I can't make out the exact letters/number. I can try to shoot pictures again and provide some better ones, if needed).

My TV is SD CRT, not HD LCD, so resolution shouldn't be a problem as well.

I checked the MD5 of the PAK file I got, just in case - it's correct.

I've tried several games so far, with the same result, some of them in both NTSC and PAL versions (my console is PAL, but I play games from all regions and my TV supports both 50/60 Hz, PAL/NTSC modes, just no progressive scan option) - Crash Team Racing, Alundra, Jackie Chan's Stuntmaster - and also a homebrew called Roll Boss Rush. I checked the Crash Team Racing MD5 to be sure - it's correct. Not using any additional BIOS files, fixes, cheats or patches. Tried VCD files both converted with CUE2BIN and PSXVCD, same result. Adding SB. and XX. at the beginning of the ELF file name (POPStarter) for SMB and USB loading, respectfully - the rest of the name stays the same as the VCD file, except for the extension, of course. Using uLaunchElf to start the ELF files manually. Both VCD and ELF extensions written in capital letters.

I've also tried DKWDRV (my console is model SCPH-77004) and PS2PSXe to run PS1 games - and I get the same result, black screen. I'm starting to think that all my settings are correct and it's a hardware issue on my end, but I'm not giving up on that yet - I really don't like how PS1 games look on my LCD monitor through a PS3, I really want to play them on the CRT through my PS2. And my laser still kind of works with back ups, but I want to preserve it.

If anyone can give me a suggestion or a direction, I can provide more info and some screenshots/photos - I just didn't want my first post to be too long and overwhelming (I guess that didn't work at the end lol).

Any and all kind of help/feedback would be highly appreciated, thank you in advance!

Moved loader.elf to 0x00092000 due to kernel corruption.

Cumulative r6, fixes as of 2020/05/20 :

There are more pending fixes to be commited though...
So as this project has been "closed."
I am wondering, is this the definitive final update for POPSTARTER?
Latest POPSTARTER.ELF with TROJAN_7.BIN?
VS latest POPSTARTER without it?

Trying to get a clear understanding of what the final setup is supposed to be.
Then from there, its all Hugopocked POPSTARTER Fixes.

Hello, I'm going to answer because I know something about this, I think that's mostly an update to their popstarter wlaunchelf integration the base address for some ELF, I recommend using the latest version 2019, TROJAN_7, which has an accumulation of fixes for the emulator and games, I recommend using it in games that I have not corrected, because this accumulation of corrections causes crashes in games that I have corrected, If you want to try it, use the TROJAN_7 example in Final Fantasy 8, This is because some of the fixes integrated into that TROJAN are universally applied to all games, well that's what I know greetings!

Thank you Hugo! So I shouldn't actually place any of these in POPS/, but rather per game as needed?

Unless you don't use any of my fixes you can put it in the main POPS folder, but if you use my fixes then you should put that last TROJAN_7 that krHACKen did for a separate game in the game's VMC folder and only if my fix is not already using TROJAN_7's slot.

Okay now that we're on the subject I did this to avoid conflict and other problems read what I put below the download file.

TROJAN_7.BIN Cumulative r7
# The TROJAN_7.BIN is a file made by krHACKen which contains cumulatives fixes for
the PS1 games using the POPStarter launcher (POPS emulator).
First version of the TROJAN_7.BIN was made in 02/04/2020. # >

I hugopocked 23/12/2024 made this modification in krHACKen TROJAN 7 to disable a fix that affects many other games negatively by adding more crashes:

https://www.mediafire.com/file/c6eqcx81yn3n8yu/Cumulative_r7_Disabled_something_XD.rar/file

All these games have the same disabled fix in common:
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Disabled *Metal Slug X* (SLES-03575) (SLUS-01212) (SLPM-86456) fix as it was causing more crashes in many
other games, and then I hugopocked released an improved fix for Metal Slug X that fixes the crashes and
restores responsiveness to the controls.

Disabled *Countdown Vampires* (SLUS-00898) (SLUS-01199) fix as it was causing more crashes in many other
games, and then I hugopocked released an improved fix for Countdown Vampires that fixes the crashes and
restores responsiveness to the controls.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I plan to correct them but I haven't done it yet because I forgot XD

Disabled *Speedball 2100* (SLES-02782) Fixes the freeze at the initial start, but unfortunately the game
cannot be played because the pads are unresponsive.

Disabled *Zeus II: Carnage Heart* (SLPS-02318) Fixes the freeze at the initial loading, but unfortunately
the game cannot be played because the pads are unresponsive.

Someone on reddit wrote there is a new version hidden in the replies on the forum somewhere? Is this true? First post says Latest version (2019/06/05)?

That is the final version.
The final fix released by kHn is only advised (Trojan 7) if you aren't using per-game fixes by hugopocked.

There are different settings that can be applied to POPSTARTER.ELF, perhaps that's what they meant:

I'm using popstarter 2019 build, and noticed that my PAL games scroll all over the screen, from top to bottom, using my HDMI adapter (PAL PS2 games run with no issues and NTSC PS1 games run fine too, and my PS2 is PAL too). By disabling the pal patcher in the CHEATS.TXT file with $NOPAL, i'm not getting the scrolling anymore, but the image is off-centered, could be fixed with Y and X POS values maybe, but i don't know why the scrolling is happening in the first place, maybe something about 50 and 60hz? Pal patcher?

I managed to copy what this guy did in this video, but although the games appeared on my OPL thru MX4SIO, the games sinply dont play and revert back to LaunchELF.

The prefix of each game is okay, right??

MX4SIO drivers for POPSTARTER

https://github.com/israpps/BDMAssault/releases/tag/mx4sio
Hello @El_isra .

Thank you in advance for your help.

Très cordialement.

It's supposed to show up in the APPS-page!

I managed to make it work. Thank you for your tips.

Somehow, the YouTube videos you'll find online will show you the old naming formats.
XX.GameName

But try to name your files on the new style, it can work somehow.
SLUS_000.00.GameName

I'd still wonder how it led that way.
