Perhaps it is unlikely now but I remember in glory days of PS3 modding (maybe 1 or 2 years after MW2 came out) that I've seen some videos of PS3 phats with extra switch built into front, back or side of PS3 where people were calling them firmware switches...

I recall it being in the period of 3.41 to 3.55 so I'm not sure if it was a feature used exclusively by very few people, maybe something made to be impossible after 3.55 or 4.21? or just various random videos being made by Rebug, Cobra ODE, Progskeet or TrueBlue users, etc.?

You are right, there was a time when a hardware mod was used to "sandwich" a custom NAND or NOR flash over the original, and swap which one was active with a switch.
