Proper procedure for making ISOs

Last time I did CFW was many years ago and I wasn't using the ISO method.

Now that we can just rip ISOs and play them directly, I want to make sure I'm ripping my discs correctly. I have several questions...

1. I see that games can be updated as usual from the XMB, but also the updates can be downloaded as pkg files and applies that way. Does it matter which way you update your games?
2. When ripping to an ISO, is there any way to rip an "updated" ISO that already has the latest version somehow applied? Or would I just have to update the ISO again any time I move my HD to a different CFW console that doesn't have that ISO already installed on it?
3. What's the most convenient way to play ISOs from an external HD? I thought the ISOs would show up in Webman MOD, but they don't... it just always says I have zero PS3 games. But MultiMan can mount them just fine at which point I can launch from the XMB like a normal disc. But I don't like the extra steps and would love to just fire up the PS3, navigate to my drive/list of games, pick one, and launch it. Is this possible?

Thanks!

1. it shouldn't matter - downloading the update or installing it.
2. that won't work. if you try using an update that's been applied to a disc game, you'll get an incompatible disc error. I forgot what the error actually says, but it will show up over the disc icon and the game won't load. I've tested it with a jb game.
3. this one I'm not sure of. those games should show up. maybe update webman mod?

Great thanks, so there's no risk in downloading updates "the old fashioned way". For some reason I felt there might be. It's certainly less hassle.

For #2, so basically if I rip a disc to my external HD, then update and play it on Console #1, then another day I move the drive to console #2, I'll have to update it again for that console... right?

As for #3, something is definitely funky. One console (Ferrox, not Rebug) Webman MOD shows the ISOs fine and works great. The other (Rebug) shows zero ISOs. I'll try a reinstall... thanks!

1, no risk. in fact, you don't even need to be signed in to psn to download updates.
2. you'll have to install the update on the other console, yes.
3. unknown.

Yeah I had noticed that updates download even when not signed onto PSN, so I was wondering if there was actually any risk or not. Good to have it confirmed tho.

As for Webman MOD, reinstalling fixed it. No idea what went haywire but all good now!
