Okay, so this is maybe me missing on basic research and the info on this is well-known, but I've searched high and low and haven't found any references to this data so going to see if anyone here has any clues.
There appear to be a relatively small percentage of PS1 discs that have entirely empty last sector, i.e. all zeroes after the header, but include mystery data in what should be the ECC section in the last 276 bytes of the sector.
According to psx-spx.consoledev.net/cdromdrive/ we're dealing with a Mode2Form1 sector so that section is intended for ECC data:
Normally, ECC section should be all zeroes when user data is empty like this. However, in these handful of games there appears to be a special message encoded in the ECC section. Here's an example from Panzer Bandit:
Out of the games I own, the full list of games that seem to include these are:
Here's another example from Capcom Generation vol. 5:
There doesn't seem to be any other pattern that ties these games together that I can identify, they're from a variety of publishers and developers, and released in different regions.
Anyway, curious if anyone has any clues as to what this might be and how to decode this info. I'm specifically interested in this because I'd like to regenerate ECC data on EBOOT extracted images and this is one piece of data I have no clue how to recover at the moment.
Thanks!
