PS2 Ps2 Slim does not read DVDs

Hi, i have a ps2 slim with a chip mod that allows you to play with original and copies of ps1 and ps2 games eu/usa/jap.
My AC adapter made a little sparkle in the ps2 plug site, so the ps2 stopped working.
I opened the AC adapter and fixed the transformer, then when I plugged it into the console again, the ps2 seemed to be unable to read anything, the chip mod starts normally but the laser couldn't see anything, I assumed.
I took the ps2 to a friend, we opened the console and he did some measurements, we also noticed that the laser moved abnormally, so we thought that the laser went unable to read properly due to a significant voltage misalignment or something (don't know the proper word in english).
I bought a new laser identical to the original one, as you can see we took out the chip mod power cable to do some testing, and turns out that the ps2 was able to read only CDs and not DVDs, don't know why. I'm desperate, i'm litterally wondering through the internet for years looking for an answer to this problem, don't know what to do about it

In short...
Without modchip with new laser your PS2 can read only CD?
With modchip PS2 cannot read anything?

You bought an original or replacement laser?

with and without chipmod PS2 can only read CDs,
both with the old laser and with the new laser he only reads CDs.
The laser is a replacement for the Solidal brand, PVR-802W model

If you just need to play games, use OPL via USB or ETH.
I ended up this way years ago when my 77004 optical drive stopped to work. first tried blocking the sensors ('cause some times it is the cover that doesn't properly push them), then replaced the flat cable, I replaced other things too, pratically every component of the optical drive, but never solved (I didn't measured anything though, maybe the problem was in the Ps2 MB).

I bought a FAT Ps2 after. But I still use the 77004 playing games from ETH (using a mini-router with USB input).

Anyway your Ps2 problem seems much easier to solve than mine.

At the moment I have the console, I correct myself, the PS1 games stop at boot, the PS2 games the red menu appears with the insertion written playstation or disk playstation 2

yes yes, at this moment the chimod is disconnected, everything works in an original way and I am testing only with original discs, however, I noticed a small damage on the flat cable that connects the laser.
when the disc reading starts, the laser only moves forward, does not go back and two small beeps are heard

You mean flex ribbon cable:

Why not measure its conductivity \ resistance?
If something will be wrong buy another, they seems to be quite cheap (less than 5$).
Reason for editing: Fixed typo

When trying to fix my Ps2 I bought a box with many of them at few cents.

@Rinaldis As Jolek said, check the ends of the wires with the tester to see if there are interruptions.
