PS2 PS2BBL installed on HDD cannot load OSDSYS

I've formatted a HDD and installed PS2BBL on it using the "PS2 HDD Decryption Helper" scripts.

It does boot once the HDD is in the PS2, but one important thing doesn't work: it's not possible to go to OSDSYS. I can bind $OSDSYS to a key or "auto" in the CONFIG.INI, but both result in a screen stuck at the PS2BBL logo if OSDSYS is selected.

This leaves no other option to go to OSDSYS (for changing time/video settings) then pull out the HDD or use a FMCB card.

The PS2 is a SCPH-39004 with a original network adapter, IDE HDD and Modbo 5.0 modchip. This problem do exist even with the modchip disabled.

It's already the newest 1.2.0.

If I add FHDB to PS2BBL it doesn't work because of the modchip. The newest version crash at the logo, the older versions gave a black screen when something is selected to be loaded. Just the same behavior as installing FHDB using the original installer.

I will dig through Discord and find that stuff for you. It is double interesting in your modchip case, if works. :]

Does this work when installed on the internal HDD too?

It mentions "USB support is dropped from the patcher, so only memory cards are checked for FREEMCB.CNF". I don't know if that means that even internal HDD is not checked?

I tried to put patcher.elf & launcher.elf on the HDD at pfs:/__sysconf.

In the PS2BBL config.ini I have this line:
Code:
LK_START_E1 = hdd0:__sysconf:pfs:/patcher.elf

After loading PS2BBL and pressing "Start" is does load something, but after some seconds the PS2 just reboot and start PS2BBL from the HDD over again.

It seems like using SoftDev2 instead of PS2BBL on the HDD can load the OSDSYS (holding triangle button) and is the only option to get there with HDD booting without the use of a memory card.

However, SoftDev2 is not very flexible. Only auto-start OPL from a fixed location, with the only other options are uLE (fixed location) or OSDSYS. But it's the only solution I can find at the moment that doesn't require a memory card.

I tried uLaunchELF too. While started from a FMCB card it can go to OSDSYS using the PS2Browser option. But when started from bootable HDD the option just reboot to OSDSYS which will trigger the HDD boot proces again and come back to uLaunhELF instead of OSDSYS.

Is there no program that can boot from HDD and present a configurable menu to start ELF's and have a working option to return to OSDSYS?

High probability that El_isra will fix that bug in PS2BBL in one of next versions (You are not the only one who cannot launch OSDSYS).

So for now SoftDev2 is the only option.

Is it possible to change from SoftDev2 to PS2BBL in the future easily, without destroying the APA-Jail?

Yes. Also You can always clear out "__syscon" and "__system" partitions. There is option for that in Exploiter script, which in addition also clearing up bootstrap from "__mbr" to prevent blackscreen if will be orphaned.
