PS2 PS2's first steps; running PS1 games?

Hiya there: I'm fairly new to the homebrew scene and managed to run OPL via Bootloader on my good ol' PS2, burned from an ISO.

Installed / copied OPL to my memory card, and using OPL Manager on my PC I'm able to easily copy and run games on my PS2 via a USB thumbdrive.

I couldn't manage to make ps1 games run, though!

I feel like I'm too much of a layman to make something called "POPS"(Starter?) to work, and the tutorials I've found seem to be a bit beyond my reach as of right now.

Is there a beginner friendly , step-by-step tutorial for inexperienced people like me?

Thanks!

The simplest of ways would be finding an earlier version of OPL which is the 10th Anniversary edition, for you to make it easier to see your installed PS1 games.

The OPL versions of today has your PS1 games kinda invisible, either because it'll be seen on your APPS folder or worse, won't be seen in its entirety.

Bad recommendation.

Open PS2 Loader Daily Build [1]
That is, OPL DB or OPL TA. Although the name suggests that it is the official OPL so much that it is the latest, in reality it is a fork of the OPL - on top of which it is not respected among the so-called scene (and unfortunately it is still wildly popular on YouTube, Reddit, sellers etc.). This is because it has an integrated POPStarter against the wishes of the author; a number of disastrous code changes that result in problems unknown in OPL and other forks (e.g. lower compatibility; VRAM problems; random zeroing virtual PSX cards); a plagiarized theme that includes bitmaps belonging to Apple. The author himself repeatedly lies about the OPL DB, so you may find information on the internet contradicting that above…

Versions not worth owning: ;)
  • 0.9.1 (which is called 10th Anniversary, hence the abbreviations OPL DB TA or OPL TA)
  • 1.2.0 beta (the latest build)
Unique Features:
  • Due to the integration of the PSX emulator, it includes an ELM category where PSX disc images are listed. While this is a very important functionality for many, please note that OPL can do the same, only not in a dedicated category, but in APPS (e.g. that way).
  • Additional assets in themes (e.g. third frame for screenshot, game logo).

I can be apologetic recommending the TA, since I get the context from the OP saying that he/she's a beginner on this.

Have fun on your PS1 games then.
