Here is an ELF (app by krat0s) for showing your PS2 Temperatures.
Works with SCPH-500XX and later models.

Version by akuhak with endlessly updating temperature every 3 seconds,
and also you can see your mechacon version on the screen:

Should also work with SCPH-500XX and later models.

From what I remember some (later) PS2 models have a discrete temperature sensor, placed close to the EE on the PCB, and connected to the MeachCon via some serial interface (see SMs). I don't think the EE or IOP or GS have internal temperature sensors. The EE heats up the most (IOP has basically no direct cooling), and the GS, doesn't get too hot, so the EE is the one (even on later models - SCPH-50000 and later) that really can't be used without a heatsink.
However I am not absolutely certain about the above.

I think it works with the Heatsink only for quite a while and AFAIR it had a "security shutdown" feature! ;)

For those who want to test I modified source code and recompiled app. Changes: now it will update endlessly temperature every 3 seconds, and also you can see your mechacon version on the screen. I plan to test it with my scph-50003 with dead fan control to see which value is the limit.
Attached with source code.

Don't kill/roast your PS2!
I can't fix this unit, I tried many times. Fan not working whatever I do. I know that it has some temperature control cause it shutdowns after 20-30 minutes of work. Or 10-15 if I attach HDD adapter with HDD.

Which version did you try?
PS2Temps.zip or Mechacon_version and temperature.7z.

What is your ROMVER?
You can check it in wLaunchELF:
MISC/Debug Info
rom0:ROMVER == "0190...."

Both versions work fine with my SCPH-50004:
