PS3 PS3 3 beeps and shut down while playing

Hi, I have this issue with my ps3 slim CECH-2004A CFW 4.90 evilnat cobra:

whenever i play a PS3 game (both from disc and from dumps) the console crashes with 3 beeps (apparently YLOD?) but i manage to turn it off and on again. After i do this i can play a little longer but like there is some time bomb that can make it happen again randomly.

I have changed the thermal paste both on CPU and RSX, the webman mod readings were fine (under 50 degrees Celsius with vents at 25%) at the time of the shut down.

The console can run homebrews just fine, i can dump any of my games entirely in multiman for hours but the first time I boot up a game it crashes like i said.

I also tried to dump my syscon from cfw logs and this is what i find (and it does not make any sense at all for me...):

Any idea of what may be causing the issue? Thank you in advance for any help...

Your logs point to the RSX caps going bad, likely causing the lock conditions that generated 1601 and 1701, with no 14FF in sight.

I would replace those - IIRC 2000s are the last to have TOKINs on the RSX only (with CPU running tantalums from the factory) so
, with all those 1002s in sight, I'd replace them.

Did you get anything like green splotches or graphical corruption? I'm only asking this last question to rule out the possibility of a bad RSX.

I had a couple of times the XMB went all fuzzy but it is rare and a reboot fixed the issue (i blamed the hdmi cable...), while playing and before the crashes nothing of sort.

Also, how many 330uf capacitors should i use in replace of the tokins? i saw a couple of video on youtube, many uses 4, others 6... Can 6 be too much and kill the console?

4x330uF usually does well for me, for either kind of TOKINs - 0E108 or 0E128.

As for going fuzzy, I'd blame the filtering for the GPU going bad - kinda makes sense that it didn't do it often. After all, it's a 65nm RSX we're talking about - these are among the safe ones, so definitely the caps at fault causing the fuzziness.

Last question, should i replace the nec tokins right below the RSX (RSX side) or the ones on the back of the PCB?

I usually do the ones on the bottom side of the RSX, and leave the ones on the IHS side alone as they act as bridges.

How sad that even in later revisions, the problems were never fixed. Thankfully, the same cannot be said about the 360.

I would know, I made a similar post because my CECHK01 does the exact same thing. My 360, however, still loads up and runs fine. At least MS fixed their console around mid 2008, as mine is an August 2008 Falcon.

here's the log
Your errors point to the CELL and RSX thermal sensors, but I can't find anything else on the Wiki. (as in, a more detailed explanation).

Maybe broken temp sensors?

You got the syscon log? It can tell what's the reason it shuts off randomly.

As for the 360s, I guess I'm the few people to main a 2008 serviced Xenon lol (X817791) :chuncky:

hi, how do I get this syscon log on HEN? I'm having a similar problem with the PS3 turning off during start up without any indication, when that happens I can usually make it turn on after a little bit of pressure is applied on the top part of the console. In some days I can play for hours without any trouble, and in others it shuts down in the xmb. Would love to make sense of this. I don't think it's overheating because the CPU and RSX are always at 58-60 ÂşC with a fan speed of 40%, even though I live in a very hot country.

Yeah, $ony took its time to address the issues... in Super Slim models they almost solved the issue as far as i know, i am reading all sorts of document online since i've started having issues...

You can try with the homebrew PS3 Advanced Tools, have a USB pen drive connected and use the Dump SYSCON Error Log option, it will save a txt file with the dump similar to my first post. Be careful to use only the syscon dump as that homebrew is very powerful but also dangerous if you mess things up.

@Raidmax I installed ps3 advanced tools and saw no option to dump the syscon log. Is the version I am using too old?

wish I had good news, but nope! It was something with the RSX, needed a reballing. I kept it alive with the penny trick for a few months but had to buy a new ps3 eventually because games were freezing a lot and the GLOD got worse before it died for real :sorrow:

I ordered a capacitor. My order should arrive within 1 week. My console is also randomly shutting down. I don't see any error codes. Only the high intensity Last Of Us game puts a lot of load on the cell, so NEC/TOKIN capacitors are insufficient. My PS3's total runtime is only 1 day and 16 hours.
