PS3 PS3 40GB of HDD Space Missing

I have 320GB(Appears to be 298 GB in system settings.) PS3 Slim. All games, all files and free space occupy a total of 258 GB. When we subtract this value(298 GB) from the total area, 40GB seems to be missing. What might have happened to this 40 GB of free disk space? How can I restore this 40 GB disk space?

8% is reserved by the system and is complicated to free up. there is a guide here but as always it's at your own risk.

IF you ripped games using multiman, or transferred using ftp, and either failed at any point, you could have some useless files taking up space. I'm too lazy right now to look up the path, but at least it's a possible breadcrumb to the solution... :)

someone said that at least deleting with multiman didn't return his space, but he found out that mm was the problem. deleting multiman freed the space. I'm not sure what could've happened there as I no longer use mm.

if that was the guy with 100s gb of vids, his problem was in multiman he used "make videos playable in showtime" (who whatever it is lol) and that made symbolic links that kept the files on hdd after the original files were deleted.

also if you play ps2 iso from usb maybe the iso was copied over and not deleted after by backup manager.

EDIT:
also lose 2gb due to hdd1 partition that is used by games as temp space. and on nor models most flash files are on hdd. and of course if you have linux installed on ps3 hdd...

@Coro , you may be right about that post. I can't really remember the specifics. what he has is probably what your first reply was, just normal used space.

i forgot to mention "check file system". it may free a little space by fixing errors.

if my math is right OP should be close to what it should be so maybe just pngs and sfos and other stuff that is cached here and there adding up.

this problem happens to a lot of people, and there aren't any really good ways to fix it especially if you're legit.

My all games are digital type(NPEB or NPUB) games.

Maybe check in /dev_hdd0/game folder if you have _INST_* or _DEL_* folders.

These folders could remain consuming a lot of hdd space, if the console hanged or was shutdown during a game installation or deletion.

multiMAN (BLES80608) and IRISMAN00 cache folders are another places that may consume a lot of space.
These folders are obsolete nowadays, but these backup managers still support *.666** and make a copy of the large files (+4GB) in these folder when the games are copied to/from USB FAT32.

Another place that could consume a lot of space is /dev_hdd0/home, specially when the user have installed or played many games with trophies or savedata, or created several users.

A rebuild database could help to discover some games that remain installed, but not appear on XMB. Just be aware that rebuilding the database the configuration of "albums" for games in XMB will be lost.

Also check the folders for content of backup managers: GAMES, GAMEZ, PS3ISO, PS2ISO, PSXISO, PSPISO, ROMS, Packages, or /dev_hdd0/tmp/wmtmp

If the above doesn't help, I suggest to backup your important data and reset the console to factory settings and format the hdd. This could take you several hours to do it.

Hi.
My question is, if I reformat the hard disk from XMB, (to get back all the lost disk space) what will happen to my CFW?
I really don't want to reflash a custom firmware.
I don't care to lose all homebrew, I can reinstall.
Thank you.

Reinstalling firmware doesn't delete user data but wiping the drive will cause you to lose everything. You can use this app to get some of the space back. Some is needed for the OS but using this app the OS only uses 2% of the HDD space instead of 8% of the drive. If you are using one of EvilNat's CFW it's built into the firmware. If not just use this bud you don't need to format or install your firmware again.
