PS3 PS3 artifacts and freeze after some seconds

Hi,
I just bought a PS3 slim 120gb and put hen on it. Since 3 days my PS3 doesnt work anymore. When I boot it up it makes strange artifacts and freezes. This happens after just some seconds after the PS3 booted. Can anyone help me?

It's common to believe it's a rsx failure however I have discovered that actually most of the time it's a CPU BGA issue. This means a CPU reflow should sort the issue out. Or you can try applying some pressure to the CPU, in the link below your see what I mean

Ok, thanks for your replys guys. I will try to put another hdd in and see if it works. What does CPU reflow mean exactly? Is it just cleaning the CPU and RSX and putting new thermal paste on it?

No it's not, to do a reflow on a PS3 motherboard you need a professional set up. So a good rework station like computer booter uses or a one that's been made using a pre heater and a hot air station with a BGA nozzle like Felix uses.

To see if its a CPU substrate issue you need to apply pressure to the CPU like shown in my video. Since I have brought this to everyone's attention many other videos have been made highlighting the CPU BGA issue that causes graphical artifacts or GLOD. Again this is shown by apply pressure on the CPU to see if I boots without the glitches

Oh ok, thanks for the explanation. A reflow is not an option for me, because I dont have a professional setup. I will still try to put pressure on it and see if it works. Thanks again for the reply

Guys, thank you very much for your help. The pressure mod worked perfectly. I just played 1 hour, but I had no problems at all. I have 1 more problem now: When I opened the PS3 I damaged the fan connector. I tried to solder it, but I am not experienced and I wasnt able to. But I connected the fan cable to a usb charger. The fan works, but only if I plug the usb into a 220v socket. I wanted to plug it in one of the usb ports of the PS3, but it doesnt work there. I read somewhere that I need a 5v cable from a mouse or keyboard and than it will work on the ps3 usb ports. What do you guys think, could it solve my problem, and will the fan spin enough when connected to the usb port of the PS3?

I'm glad it worked out for you, you will need to have webmans dynamic fan control activated, you need to keep the console as cool as possible to avoid further board warping. I suggest you set it to run at a minimum of 32 percent fan speed, see my webman explained video for further details.

This is further evidence that the CPU causes more of a fault than people give it credit for, and the RSX graphic chip isn't always to blame. The reason a reball/Frankenstian works temporarily is because the heat used to perform the procedure warps the board back to its original position which reconnects the CPU BGA.

It will be interesting to see how long these frankenstian mods last for, I'm guessing there will be a reasonable percentage of them failing due to a CPU BGA issue. The ultimate fix would be a CPU reball and a frankenstian mod done at the same.

You can probably by a slim fan complete with connecter on eBay for a reasonable price, I would do that if I was you.

Ok thanks, but does it work if I plug the fan into the usb port, because my fan connector on the mainboard broke, like I said before.

I don't know, if the connector on the motherboard is damaged you would need to solder on a new one. Your fan is extremely important because the mod won't last unless your console is kept cool. If you connect it to a USB would webman still be able to control the fan? I'm assuming you have custom firmware or Homebrew Enabler, if you don't you will need to get this on your console.

Yes, i have a hen ps3 and I have webman, but I think that changing the fan speed would only work if its connected to the connector on the mainboard? Right now the ps3 is kept cool, because the fan is connected to a normal 220v socket and the fan spins full speed.

That's better than nothing but I'm guessing that's annoying as it's loud. Unfortunately by the time you have paid for shipping and a repair this would exceed the cost of the console.

Yeah, I wont pay for a repair because its too expensive. I will try to modify the cable and see how fast the fan will be if put into the usb port of the PS3. If its too slow I will put it back into the 220v socket.

Unfortunately I have an update about the pressure mod. I played a bit with my ps3 (maybe 15 hours) and I have the artifacts again. I reopened the ps3 4-times now and everytime I reopened it and put more pressure or less pressure it worked for some minutes. I have the feeling that the pressure mod works fine, I just need to find the "right" pressure.

Well it seems after chatting with some members on this site it does seem the RSX may still be to blame. So the pressure on the CPU may actually be doing something to the RSX, strange but possible.

Now I did have a few consoles show the Artifacts when it got hot (over 68 degrees). I have tested this mod on backwards compatible consoles, from what your telling me this is a later phat model. This means it will require a different amount of pressure and also you will need to increase the fan speed to keep the the console under 65 degrees.

So it does look like that either the RSX is failing or the CPU needs a reflow or a reball. As for the pressure on your console it will be different as it's not a backwards compatible PS3. Is your fan still running flat out at 100 percent?

The fan is still connected with usb on a 220v socket but I think its not running 100%, I think it runs about 40-50% (I tried on another ps3 with webman and put the fan on 80% and its a bit louder). I don't know why the fan wouldnt run 100% when connected to a 220v socket, but I think its not fullspeed. My ps3 is a slim model (not superslim). Yesterday I opened the ps3 and put a bit less pressure, because before I tried with ultimate pressure and it worked for some minutes and than failed again. Maybe I should try with really low pressure?
Edit: Is there a way to show temperatures while ingame?
Edit 2: I dont think its a temperature problem, because I got artifacts again, I let the ps3 cool down and opened the case and restarted the ps3 again and it showed the artifacts after 10 seconds. So it cant be the problem of temperatures.

Below is an interesting YouTube recording of a flip chip and BGA issue. Now the graphic Artifacts can either be a flip chip issue or BGA, in your case I believe it's a flip chip issue, now this could either be on the CPU or RSX. Unfortunately it's not worth repairing because of the cost. I believe most of the consoles i have got working with the mod where BGA issues which is why the pressure mod is lasting, if its a flip chip issue the problem will almost certainly come back.

I watched the video and unfortunately I think its a flip chip issue. Thanks a lot though for your help, I really appreciate it. Btw. do you know if there is a way to show temperatures of the cpu and rsx while playing a game?
