PS3 BC YLOD With strange symptoms

Hi there. So far I have posted this on other thread, but I didn't get any proper answer.
Strangely, my PS3 boots fine without bluray drive connected to it, but i'm unable to install firmware or play anything to test RSX/CELL workability. Even tho, I had no issues browsing menu and some internet on it.
As I were saying about blu ray, if you disconect ribbon cable, ps3 will boot, but WITH cable connected to MB - it just wont., I get YLOD with 3 beeps. I Tried swaping motherboards, but still nothing.

I am suspending power supply, but I'm not sure.

This are syscon errors:

So 1701 and 1001. Both are connected to CELL.

You need to problem solve by trying various methods. Have you got another blu-ray drive? If so have you tried connecting it? Have you tried a different ribbon cable? Have you installed NoBd Evilnat custom firmware 4.89.

So if it was me I would try the above, a short in the blu-ray drive can cause this, I had a faulty power connection between the blu-ray drive and MB, this was resolved by swapping the power lead that connects the MB to the blu-ray drive.

You need a known working blu-ray drive, a known working ribbon cable and a known working power lead that connects the blu-ray drive to the MB to see if this resolves the situation.

The console can still be jailbrokern and you should be able to load Evilnat 4.89 No Bd custom firmware. From here you can load applications without getting a black screen. So you can obtain the EID root key so you can re-marry a new drive if that's required.

So its not a case of us finding the answer for you, it's more a case of you having the correct spares (BD drive and cables) so you can problem solve the error yourself. Without knowing the possible variables (will it boot with a different drive or ribbon cable or power cable for example) it's difficult to determine what's causing the error.

Yeah, I bought spare bluray drive motherboard from eBay and it wasn't problem it seems. I still get the same YLOD.
About ribbon cable, i tested all points with multimeter and they're all fine.

Previous owner said, that PS3 "died" due to overheating. After that, he were getting YLOD's.

Tho, I'm not sure if he's not lying, because I noticed that warranty seal is missing (but motherboard is clean, and no one have touched it).

Can it be power supply? Or maybe some NEC/TOKIN cappacitors near CELL?

Or maybe I should clear error codes and get new ones instead?

No, I'm unable to install any firmware, because I were trying to install CFW without bluray connected to it.

I can use it without bluray, to browse menu and all but... It really seems that hard drive is bad (i get no sound sometimes, or it's cracking)
I really want to blame NEC/TOKIN cappacitors, but no one can be sure in that.

Btw, I have COK-002 Motherboard.

Are you on a update loop?, if not you should be able to install NoBd custom firmware. Also you say you have tried another blu-ray motherboard, have you tried a entire new drive?

You can piggyback some tantalum capacitors to the topside of the MB. Saying that i have never heard of a console displaying a YLOD due to bad tokins and a blu-ray drive connected. Saying that it doesn't mean this isn't the case.

Have a look at my tutorial below on how to piggyback tantalum capacitors on a COK-002 board. This definitely works to solve unexpected shutdowns as it has solved random YLOD when playing TLOU

Yes, I have an update loop. If i remember that correctly, i get stuck on BD check. Also, this drive surely works, I know it. Error occurs when motherboard is connected. That small board in the back of BD. If it's not connected, then ps3 loads normally. Due to old age of HDD i get some cracking sounds, while browsing menu. I'll try to get some tantalums to test this out, but i have to be sure what's the case. Could that really be NEC TOKINs? Also, maybe I have to check power supply? It might just not give enough power to some components, but i doubt it

@m3duard What firmware version are you on? If it is 4.80 or higher and you have access to the web browser you can exploit the console so it allows a NoBD CFW to install.

This would make diagnosing other issues easier, and allow you to remarry a different BD logic board if required.

Well... There's no firmware installed now, i'm afraid. I still have to install it, but i can't due to BD ylod issue, which is also unsolved

Well can you still do this?

If you can still do that, what FW version is it on? and if you are currently on 4.80 or higher firmware then you can use the web browser to install an exploit, that will allow you to skip the BD check and install a NoBD CFW.

If it boots without a BD drive, go to the settings category, System, System information to see the current FW version.

EdIt: OK, I see, you are stuck in update loop. Too late for that then.

OK, so as its stuck in update loop and IF the BD drive ylod hardware issue can not be fixed, what you could do is patch the flash to allow CFW to install with a hardware flasher.

This way you can install NoBD CFW and get some use out of this console rather than it becoming a paperweight. There are some limitations to noBD FW but its better than nothing.

Hopefully you can fix the issue though.

Nope

Well, if I surely could pass BD check while installing, then I might be able to fix issue myself. Feelsbadman that I can't use drive kn backwards compatible ps3 :(

I have spare drives, cables etc. I'm in England, I you want to send me the console I am happy to try different leads and drives in an attempt to get the console to pass the BD checks

You could try cleaning the mobo sockett with isopropyl alcohol and then connect the flex only and see what happens, and later power connector of BD only. Doing that you can see if there's something damaged either in the data lines, or energy of the drive. If YLOD only shoots when both are connected, then it's gonna be complicated. Time to grab a multimeter and the schematic.

I already did that. Both connector and drive work fine. Problem occurs when both are plugged
