So I am the original owner of this machine I havent played it in years and I booted it up. It would only play Digital games and once in a while Blu Ray Discs, So I opened it up and cleaned the laser but this did not fix the issue.

Went online and ordered the disc assembly and installed it and the blu ray drive works great ( used same daughter board. )

Now I have a problem with certain games shutting the console off with a red blinking light.

I can play Last of Us, Uncharted 3 , ETC but when I try to play Castlevania Lords of Shadow or Ninja Gaiden it will load the game , take you to the menu but once you try to hit new game or load game as soon as the game engine has to load it shuts off.

I pulled the PS3 apart and replaced thermal paste with MX4 , I did not change heat pads ( was not aware at time, just basic PC guy. ) and got same result . Half games play and half do not.

I assume it has to do with power as Lords of shadow and Ninja gaiden are FPS unlocked vs Locked. IDK at this point.

I bought a new PS3 but I want to try to fix this one. I assume next step is to get into Sys Con.

I understand this may be YLOD and 65mm chip might be bad but If its anything else I would like to try to fix it .

Thank you for your help ( new user. )

The flashing red light is a clear indicator of an overheat. The console got too hot, the console shut itself off to prevent damage. Unfortunately unlike the PC world an overheat can essentially just be considered a YLOD because they are caused by the same thing. Don't get me wrong a thermal compound change and a good cleaning could help if it's bad enough beforehand, but otherwise this should be considered a YLOD issue and would require a reflow and/or reball by someone who specifically works with PS3 consoles. (Don't take it to one of those chain repair places like ubreakifix as they would just charge an arm and a leg and they would just buy a motherboard off ebay) If you can find someone who does reflowing on a PS3 and is experienced with the console that will be your best bet.

Is it even worth it for a slim cech 2001a? I bought a super slim for 75 dollars should I sell this for parts?

It really depends if you have a fully loaded console here then you stand to lose save files and modding etc. For me it is always worth it to reflow if the need is there But if the console itself doesn't have a reason to be saved then no

I had the same issue with the PS3 Slim I bought on Yahoo Japan Auctions. I initially used only a little thermal paste, and the console would shut off with a blinking red light after about five minutes of use. My mistake was not applying enough thermal paste the 4g of MX-6 I had left wasn't sufficient. I thought it would be enough, but I was wrong. So, I bought an 8g tube of MX-6, spread it manually, and the console started working again.

As for thermal pads, you don't need to replace them unless they break. The flashing red light is a clear indication of overheating. The console gets too hot and shuts itself off to prevent damage. Try repasting it first. If that doesn't solve the issue, check for errors through Syscon.
Please note that if you don't know how to solder practice first on something that you don't care about, ps3toolset.com is a good alternative although this will only work if your console can boot properly. If it doesn't boot, you may want to send it to someone reputable who knows how to diagnose and properly fix PS3s. If you do know how to solder, even at a basic level, follow RIP Felix's tutorial.

SYSCON is very easy to do on a Sherwood system. I'd too would like to see the results from your findings as it can help better the database. I have a spare CECH-2001A motherboard here that I could part with if needed. You'll have to marry your BD board to it though.
