PS3 PS3 CFW & Jailbreaking Basics

Lol, reminds me of the goonies when sloth mouths the knife, and goes to swing down and says......Heeeeey yoouuu guuuuyyyyss!!!

my sister's favorite movie. it's one of my favorites as well. did u hear about a possible sequel with the same cast as adults? the mother of the bad guys is dead though.,.,anne ramsey if iirc? I once had a dream of a sequel where that family escaped from prison using a hot-air balloon. lol

I have a question about 4.84 dex. More dex in general. I tried to go online with ps3id spoof in rebug tool and changed it also in webman. Some say that you can't go online on cfw 4.84 is that true? If not could somebody help me?

from 1st post:
Hello, I have a super slim ps3 that I have installed HEN 3.1.0 on Firmware 4.86 with RetroArch and MultiMAN. I have been having trouble with MultiMAN and could really use some help.

I have had success with RetroArch and was finally figuring out MultiMAN when it suddenly stopped working on me. I tried to load up the Playstation 1 .bin and .cue files I had of Castlevania - Symphony of the Night and the whole screen went black. I waited for a long time and nothing happened so I restarted the console to try and reset everything. From that point on, MultiMAN stopped working altogether, showing only a black screen any time I tried to run it. So I scoured the web and YouTube trying to find a way to fix it and every one said to simply reinstall the program.

I have done this around 10 times now and continuously get the error, "Installation of required data failed, please restart the program!" I don't know what to do from here and it's really starting to frustrate me. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi for all!
I want to backup my licenses. ReactPSN is already installed. I have started it with pressed :L2: to backup the .raps from my personal account. So far I have blackscreen but HDMI signal isn't lost so I think the console is still running. It's running for about 30 minutes. How long it takes to complete? I have only 16 games installed.

I have a question regarding upgrading to CFW, and I cant seem to find the answer readily available anywhere in concise form (maybe becasue its not a question of any consequence).

The first question I would have in upgrading to custom firmware is what effect it will have on my library of games in digital form from psn as they stand, and/or any downloaded updates or other digital content.....is there any drawback or file error concerns (even with retail games), or games that might not play properly, or anything such as reconnecting to psn to activate downloaded content etc (such as what happens if you loose the cmos battery).

Any thoughts would be appreciated,

Cheers

The first question I would have in upgrading to custom firmware is

1. what effect it will have on my library of games in digital form from psn as they stand, and/or any downloaded updates or other digital content.....
2. is there any drawback or file error concerns (even with retail games), or games that might not play properly or anything such as reconnecting to psn to activate downloaded content etc (such as what happens if you loose the cmos battery).

1. No effect unless once on CFW you decide to customise the system further with IDPS spoofing in which case you would need to create/install a new rif license file for each PSN game that needs one.
Keeping in mind that with CFW you can backup, restore & tweak any PSN game & its license.

2. Although it is the exception rather than the rule, there can be specific settings for a handful of specific games depending on the method chosen to mount them (Legacy JB folder format, BD Emulation etc..) as well as the CFW setup (Rebug specificities, CEX, DEX etc..).

As a rule of thumb on CFW, disc based retail PS3 games should keep working the same way as on OFW, same thing goes for PSN games.
As to PS3 game backups, if you are using ISO format for games on a full CEX CFW like Evilnat's Cobra CFW, no tweaks or special settings should be necessary.

Generally speaking, having CFW will make any future problem easier to sort out. Moreover, nowadays it is extremely easy to switch between OFW & CFW, you no longer need hardware flashers, so if you needed to connect to PSN to reactivate your system or whatever & really didn't want to take the risk to do it while on CFW, you can always install OFW, do your stuff, then jailbreak & reinstall CFW.

The relative ease of switching from cfw to ofw seems to facilitating fixes for potential issues that could be problems. Also, I imagine going back to Ofw, one would want to have a 'clean' system when connecting online to mitigate any potential problems? Thanks for the overview.

You will need to clarify because I am really not sure what you mean.
Switching from CFW to OFW & vice versa facilitating potential issues? What potential issues are you talking about?

hi gents, I have CECH-2504B - patched by friend of mine some time ago ... I got it from storage room where it rested for 2-3 years .... it still works, it's on 4.55 CFW most probably with MultiMAN - I forgot what CFW should I put in in order to be up-to-date, can anybody give me a hint ? also, after successful update, I'd like to dump working flash of it - just to be on safe side for the future - also would need maybe a help a bit. I read few topics here but I am not sure so that is why I am seeking for your wisdom here ... thanks & sorry for being n00b, I've been not playing with PS for quite some time, so got a bit rusty here .... thanks !

you can dump the nand with rebug toolbox. it may be possible with @Evilnat 's cfw tools/settings over the network tier, but I haven't looked. to update, just put the update on a flash drive (fat32/mbr) with this format: PS3/UPDATE/PS3UPDAT.PUP

Assuming the console is currently using a 4.55 CEX firmware (not Rebug REX/D-REX or PS3ITA), you can safely update to Evilnat 4.88.2 in theory. Plenty of new features & so far very few problems judging the user feedback.
From there, there are multiple ways to dump the Flash memory to file for backup purposes, you can use a homebrew like multiman or Rebug Toolbox or even the browser with the PS3 Toolset.

And the situation has changed a little since the 4.55 days, you no longer need a hardware flasher if you (accidentally or deliberately) install OFW, you can just use the PS3 Toolset to get a lost jailbreak back & install a CFW again.

And remember to update the various homebrews installed on the console otherwise most of them won't work on 4.8x.

How to Install CFW on PS3 (Method 1):
