PS3 ps3netsrv & NAS First Time User Questions

Hello,

I have been using ps3netsrv on my PS3 for about a year now.
My games collection is stored on my PC and using I've been connecting the PS3 to my PC with an ethernet cable and streaming the games from the PC using ps3netsrv.

I've been wanting to use a NAS instead of my PC for some time but never had the money to buy a NAS until recently. The main purpose of it will be to store and use ps3netsrv with my PS3 games and PS2 & PS1 games as I have a CECHA01 PS3 Fat Backwards Compatible. Also, I will be getting some 4K Blu-rays and I am intending to use the NAS to stream/store them also but that's something separate.

My idea is just to put the NAS next to my PS3 and connect it via an ethernet cable.

I have 3 questions:

1. I've been thinking about purchasing a new Synology DS920+ or Synology DS923+.
Which one would be better to stream PS3 games from?
I'm thinking of buying 2x 8TB Samsung 970 QVOs for storage.

2. For my purpose, does the NAS need to be connected to the internet? I would prefer just to use it as an external HDD for the PS3 as connecting it to the internet might be a hassle.

3. I don't think I'll have much of a need to keep the NAS on at all times. If I turn the NAS off then on will it auto load the games and ps3netsrv? Like will it act just like a regular HDD/SSD attached to the PS3?
I don't want to be going into any menus or stuff either.

Thanks in advance!

#1 Doesn't really matter as PS3 on a wired connection hardly ever exceeds 10 MB/s
My experience is it it between 3-7 MB/s
*You dont need extreme speed if you are serving PS3

#2 If you are only using it to serve PS3 in your home, internet isnt necessary (outside of setting up the NAS)

#3 If the NAS/PS3NETSRV are not running, it wont serve up anything.
*With exception to PS2 games as they wont run off of NAS but will be COPIED from NAS to the internal PS3 storage

If you are looking to make a media storage server, I would suggest getting a cheap PC and 8 TB usb drive
For reference - I have complete (US, EU, Jap, World) collections of PSX, PS2, PSP and almost all PS3 (no jap stuff as I cant read it and dont care about huge eyes and violet hair on girls wearing sailor suits that has a pet cat they communes with and who's estranged father owns a multi-trillion dollar science company that is conjuring up evil that he is addicted to)

My PS collection is 4.4 Tb (4,400 Gig)
*Total cost ~$200-$300
Cheap PC
Better PC
8TB drive
*You can do so much more than serve up media. I could go on about what I am doing but this is not the thread to discuss

But if you heart is set on getting a NAS - thats cool too

*Edit: Just reread that you are using a pc setup.... ignore my suggestion

@Atari800 thankyou for the response.

I think you answered my first two questions but that one about just turning on the NAS at the same time as my PS3; will it still load the games? Is unclear to me.

Thanks

Assuming that you use webMAN MOD, if you already scanned the games, they will appear listed on XMB even if ps3netsrv is turned off.

You have to run ps3netsrv before mounting any remote game or scanning for new content. If the server does not respond, webMAN MOD will disable the connection temporarily in webMAN settings until the next reboot or until you enter to webMAN Setup to reconfigure the ps3netsrv settings.

So that would be a "no" meaning that the NAS couldn't be turned off at any point unless you want to go through a configuring process?
What I was really hoping for is to sit the NAS next to my PS3 and just switch it on when I needed it.

IFAIK The windows version can be set to automatically start with windows. Not sure about the NAS/Docker Builds though.

If you turn on the ps3netsrv just before mount the remote game, there shouldn't be any issue.

If you turned it after mounting the remote game, you first will have a long timeout then the remote server will be disabled temporarily to prevent further timeouts. In this case you only have to go to webMAN Setup and enable ps3netsrv again, making sure that it is running.

I stand corrected - I had to put selected PS games in separate folders because WebMan would go out of whack at certain amount of titles (may be fixed now???)
My counts and sizes
PS1 2,708 1.7 Tb
PS2 2,066 2.9 Tb *USA only
PS3 454 2.9 Tb
PSP 511 288.9 Gb

Hello Aldo,

I got a QNAP NAS and it's working fine for streaming movies and stuff.
Now I'm wondering where to start with the PS3 side of things.
Is there a guide on setting up webman + ps3netsrv on a QNAP NAS?

No. I test ps3netsrv from my laptop. I barely use my PS3
I'm having some issues setting it up for a NAS. I'm currently communicating with the groups that work on ps3netsrv and NAS.

I'd just like to confirm that for webman the only difference should be putting the IP address of my NAS in?
Like there's no other changes need to be made in webmanmod when trying to use it over NAS?

Just thought I'd update this just incase someone comes looking in the future:
I found a working server app (program) for PS3: https://www.myqnap.org/product/ps3netsrv-ng/

The server app you use is dependent upon your brand of NAS you have: Synology, QNAP, etc.
It's also dependent upon the CPU in your NAS.
For me I had to choose the TS-NASX86 as I have a QNAP NAS with an intel processor.

Unfortunately, I could not get PS1 games to load through the NAS. webMAN MOD came up with an error when I was trying to load PS1 games. The developers of the server app said it's nothing to do with the app but how webMAN MOD loads the PS1 games.
The internal SSD in my PS3 had enough space to hold all the PS1 games I wanted, so that is not an issue for me. Although, it might be for other people with not enough space on their internal drives.
PS2 games can be copied from the NAS to the PS3 and played through webMAN MOD fine.
PS3 games stream fine though the NAS.

I discovered that you will need an ethernet cable. I have quite strong Wi-Fi in my house and discovered that when PS3 games were streamed over Wi-Fi the cutscenes such as the one you see at the start of Final Fantasy 13 were stuttering. When you are inside the game itself, it plays fine without stuttering, although loading times are longer.

@psy1 Did you get this working with your qnap? I'm in the process of trying this for my QNAP. Any tips/watchouts to make this work. My qnap is 453be intel based.
