PSIO | Frequently Asked Questions

What is PSIO?

  • PSIO is simply a cartridge that plugs into your PlayStation 1's Parallel I/O Port (PIO). It will then let you play your software from an SD card on the console instead of the CD-ROM drive.

Is PSIO an emulator for PlayStation games?

  • PSIO does not emulate PlayStation games. PSIO is an emulator of the CD-ROM co-processor (SUB-CPU). That being said, it is a hardware emulator, which, is almost identical to the original Sony CD-ROM MCU.

How much is a PSIO cartridge?

  • $149.95 AUD.

How much is shipping?

  • It is free, and included in the total cost mentioned above.

How do I select my games?

  • A custom built menu system boots up each and every time you turn on your PlayStation, which is called the "PSIO Menu System". It runs on the PlayStation 1 directly and allows you to select and boot games from the SD card using the controller.

Can I boot my original PlayStation format CD-ROM's like normal when PSIO is plugged in?

  • Yes, so long as the Switch Board has been installed (see below), there is an option in the Menu System to boot from the CD-ROM drive directly. Otherwise, you may unplug PSIO to return your PlayStation back to regular operation.

Will DUAL-SHOCK Vibration and Memory Cards work?

  • Yes. All peripherals will work like normal when PSIO is running.

Will PlayStation 1 games run at their original speed when using PSIO?

  • Yes. The PlayStation 1 Parallel Port can handle up to 3 megabytes per second on the system bus. The original CD-ROM (at 2x speed) could read at a maximum of 352 kilobytes per second, so there is plenty of bandwidth available.

Will the PlayStation 1 Power Supply Unit overload with PSIO?

  • No.

What regions will PSIO work in?

  • It will work in all regions. This includes PAL, NTSC-U/C and NTSC-J.

Do all games work on PSIO?

  • Not all games will run, and we are unsure what ones will fail without testing of each and every PlayStation game title in its library. With that being said, usually we can fix the game problem with a firmware update if you let us know the exact problem. You may however see which games have been tested here.

What format should I backup my games as?

  • We recommend that your CD-ROM discs are ripped 1:1, without any errors whatsoever, as a *.BIN and *.CUE format. Other formats you may use however are *.ISO and *.IMG.

I see that my game isn't listed in the 'Compatibility' page. Will it work with PSIO?

  • Yes, your game should work with PSIO. If your game does not work, we will flag it and start to look into it.

My PlayStation 1 is a PAL system. Can I play NTSC-U/C or NTSC-J games on it?

  • Yes, however you will need to play over RGB video output or else a modification to the PlayStation mainboard will be required in order to generate a colour picture. We will have more detailed information about this upon release and how you may perform the modification.

Are there any modifications required for PSIO to work?

  • Yes. An internal modification is required. The modification is a small printed circuit board (PCB) with a logic gate array based integrated circuit (IC) that detects whether a PSIO cartridge is plugged in or not. More information may be found here.

I have a modchip in my PlayStation. Will that effect PSIO?

  • No, nor will it have an effect on the Switch Board.

What about multi-disc games. Can I play games such as Abe's Exodus or Final Fantasy that use more than one disc?

  • This will hopefully be released in a future firmware update, but the idea would be that you simply eject and re-insert the SD card to force a disc change.

Can I watch movies/video?

  • You can watch video as a Sony STR format in a resolution of 320x256 at 15 Frames per Second in Stereo with 44.1KHz audio (MPEG frames interleaved with XA).

Can I use a Hard Disk Drive to play my games?

  • No. The USB port on PSIO is to stream image data only.

What about the PSone/SCPH-900x PlayStation's?

  • The PSone (Sony's re-designed mini PlayStation 1) and SCPH-900x series, will not be plug-and-play since they do not have a Parallel I/O port. To get around this, we have a special version that will not include the PIO header connector on the PCB. You will be required to solder 41 wires from PSIO's custom pin design to the PSone or 900x mainboard manually.

When did you start working on this?

  • PSIO began as a concept on August 15th, 2010. It is a one of a kind device, and nothing else exists like it.

I can play my games fine on my PS3. Why would someone buy this?

  • The PS3 emulates PlayStation games using software. It is inaccurate, glitchy, and the games were never designed to be played like that.

What is the point of this product? I can play my games fine from a disc!

  • The PlayStation 1 CD-ROM drive when brand new was decent quality. However, since the consoles launch in 1994, the laser assembly has deteriorated, and it is impossible to find a brand new one. Games now freeze, skip music and sometimes will not load at all due to this fact.

Will you post Worldwide?

  • Yes. We ship to almost every country

They say sales are limited, how many to... 5?

This is question that i can't answer. Only person that can, is Shadow from psxdev.net About rest of your post, yes is for few people that want it. One more time, this is not hardware for everyone. Which don't mean that everyone can have it.

You say its for the enthusiast, but I think you would have to be very enthusiastic about ps1's to buy one of these. Its practically useless to everyone but an extreme ps1 enthusiast. They say sales are limited, how many to... 5?

People like running games on original hardware, my self included. Some people don't mind buying a a piece of hardware that took years of inde development.
Some people even put together 'Retro Carts' with CRT TVs... on purpose.

I'd gladly pay $150 for it, had it native USB to hard drive support so I could just toss a 2TB fat32 disk in it. I mean, I think I payed near $200 for my SD2SNES. Then Everdrive 64 and MD etc. Price is not that big a deal if it produces what you want now that I'm in my 40s (and can solder the thing without problems).

If you think its worth it, buy one. If not, don't. Simple as that IMO.

Im not saying its not ok for the select few that may want it guys

What im saying is the price is very high, the marketing is deceitful and untrue, the 60 day post paying wait period is disgusting - basically the seller wants to assume zero risk and be guaranteed of making a profit so you have to pay and then wait up to 60 days BEFORE WORK STARTS ON YOUR UNIT (depending on how many people hes managed to rope in and how busy he is) and then a further undefined amount of time for it to be made... During which you are advised you are not to contact him enquiring about your unit (dont bother him while he's busy - hes got your money and doesnt want to have to provide customer service) and so you are to "be patient" for 60 or 70 or 80, or maybe 90 days... who knows? "You will be notified when its shipped" lol

Sure

You buy one

I wouldnt buy one of these off this guy even if i needed one

to each his or her own I suppose. when I bought the gateway flash cart for my new 3ds, I wanted to get it as cheap as possible via Singapore. it took so long that I actually thought I had imagined buying the unit.

Cybdyn is a trusted long time scene dev and would not risk his rep over this. He is the reason the DC has an ODDE due to his research. Beta testers got their units quickly as the first batch has already been sent out and I know two that have it and are more then happy with the results.

As ive already said - I am not knocking the unit, I am knocking the seller

The terms and conditions for anyone that does want to buy one of these units is a joke, he's taking the p*ss!

Hes got your money because he doesnt want to make the product and then try to sell them - he wants everyone to order and pay for them IN ADVANCE and only then he will START making them! This is made even worse because he has no idea how many he's gonna sell/has to make so he cant give you any kind of time frame - all he says is it could be up to 60 days BEFORE WORK BEGINS. And in that time you arent allowed to contact him to ask about your unit, or anything else for that matter, you are simply required to 'be patient'

What a crock of shit. i dont care what kind of rep he has, rep as a developer doesnt give you the license to try to exploit people with a piss take of a business deal in which EVERYTHING is suited to his wants and needs and you're left with sweet FA

If hes a developer and has a job thats fine, but at the end of the day, if you're marketing and selling a product to people then thats a business. In order for any person to be able to start a business that person needs to be able to run it

You cant start a business and then say ive only got time to do the taking of your money part and I havent got the time for customer service because im a developer and I have a job - it doesnt work like that. You cant cherry pick which parts of a business you want to provide.. keep the good bits and discard the others

Guy seems like a total slimeball to me

How is this any different then backing a kickstsrter campaign? I have done many without anything even being started yet so they can judge the volume of what is feasible. At least these are finalized and ready to go.

Well its totally different to a kickstarter

Lets use a kickstarter for a game for example... The campaign is started because the developer doesnt have the capital or backing to make or finish a game that they think everybody would like. Its an honest set up in which a person or group of people ask a community for help to create something they can all enjoy. A set amount is stated and any willing backers can chip in. Chip-in amounts start very low and increase. Rewards and bonuses are offered for donaters. All donaters would receive a copy of the game, while larger donaters would receive extras. The donations received would be directly used for the making of the game and would not be going in to anyones pockets as profit/mark up

Then you look at this device... Its different on every point - its not a donation to kickstart the making of it, its a pretty large price tag, of which probably half or more goes straight in to the guys pocket. This guy isnt an honest developer asking for donations to complete a project

Hes asking you to fork over $150, a lot of which will be going straight in to his pocket, and then telling you to shut up and keep quiet for a couple of months til he gets around to putting the device together

Thats why its different

BTW.. I reckon this 'limited supply' malarky is a crock of crap. This guy will sell as many of these as he possibly can

Whos gonna make a device like this and then limit the amount you will sell? Its nonsense, absolute nonsense and anyone that falls for it is daft as a brush
Doesnt anyone think its funny that its a limited edition but there isnt a number mentioned anywhere and I bet nobody knows the number - Because there isnt one!
Its a lame trick to get people placing orders. Absolute twaddle
