PS3 Questions about updating CFW PS3 and external HDD game loading

Hello,

I have a PS3 phat that I haven't used in a few years. The firmware displayed in mmCM is 4.53 SC-35 PL3. I have the latest mmCM and webMAN Mod installed. I've been looking through the forum and getting reacquainted with how everything works.

• Is there any reason to update to a newer firmware? If so, can it be any firmware and can it be installed over top of the existing one without breaking anything?

I also have setup an external NTFS formatted drive and have successfully loaded PS3 ISOs backups but have run into some issues and can't find a clear answer for some questions:

• A game which was backed up to the internal HDD a few years ago loads successfully but after turning these files into an ISO, putting them on the external drive, loading via webMAN, the picture scrolls/flickers and has some horizontal pink lines -- did I do something wrong? Is there a fix for this?
• Is it possible to turn existing, purchased PSN games into ISOs and have them loaded via the external HDD?
  • Using PS3 ISO Tools, it gave an error of "can't find game" (or similar)
  • Noticing the directory structure of PS3 game ISOs, I put the PSN game contents in a "PS3_GAME" directory and was able to create the ISO but the PSN games do not load (the PSN games being PS1 and PS2 games)
